2 Religious Education Program Mission Statement As we journey with the families of St. Joseph Church, it is the mission of the Religious Education ministries to support and assist parents in the formation of their children in their Catholic faith. We foster their own spirituality by providing them with the necessary tools and opportunities to deepen their faith through prayer, Christian Witness and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. We strive to bring to each participant the doctrines of our faith in its fullness, as both knowledge to be learned and a life to be lived. The sacraments and building of the community are key building blocks to achieving our mission statement. The following programs are also offered at Baptism Class (Infants to 7 years old) Children s Liturgy St. Joseph Parish to assist families in Right of Christen Initiation for Adults (RCIA) their faith formation: Fred & Patti Basilio & Carol Denis Mary Ann Leite, Susan Lee, Leah Ogden, Phyllis Pitoy, Margaret Lucas, Carl Sobrado Sr. Jeff Bergbauer, David Wilson, John Akau THIS YEAR S THEME: Matthew Chapter 6:14-15 Adult Scripture Sharing Mary Ann Leite (Saturdays) If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions. This year s theme goes hand in hand with the Jubilee Year of Mercy. We reflect on the basic principal that God is a being of mercy. He will forgive those who model after his ways. He does not fault the sinner as he is a Father of unconditional love, He does however frown upon our acts of offense and our decision to sin without repentance. The Good News is that through His Son, Jesus we are reunited to God. All we need to do is ask and we shall receive his unending mercy. Look to Jesus for the courage to forgive others and to be freed from sin. Trust in God s Divine Mercy because it is in love that he gives us eternal life. Let us live in his Freedom of Forgiveness! 2 Marriage Encounter Engaged Encounter 11 Rose Nunogawa Patti & Fred Basilio YOUTH & YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY is a faith formation community that teaches 100% Catholic teachings in a nonclassroom setting. Here youth & young adults may learn about prayer, worship and applying their faith in everyday settings. Here are some examples of topics: Vocations, Social Justice, Prayer, Person of Christ, Sacraments.

YEAR! It has been a successful few year as we bring more and more students and families to Jesus in his Sacraments. I would like to extend an invitation to all to continue nurturing your relationship with God through His Son, Jesus and through His beloved Church. We can all participate in the parish life by giving of our Time, Talent and Treasure. This is our stewardship. We can make this a way of life by first getting involved. Our busy schedules sometimes allows us to only choose one venue of stewardship but we are called to give in all three ways. Time can be spent volunteering in various ministries or praying along with the different prayer communities. Your talent may be shared in special particular tasks or projects. You may also serve on a leadership committee. And finally your treasure may be given to help with the different charities in and around the parish. I highly encourage parents, grandparents and families to be models of faith for our children. You are the first teachers of the faith to them. We at the parish work along side you to assist your family in meeting Jesus in the Sacraments and in his Church. I am always there to serve you and your family if you ever need me and I promise to lead you closer to Christ. How can we encourage our young to grow in faith? Make the Holy Sacraments an important role in their everyday lives. Encourage them to attend and participate in Sunday Mass weekly. Pray daily as a family as well as an individual. This is a great example of growing their relationships with God. Participation in service to our church and large community brings application of what the Gospels teach us. These are just a few simple ways we can work together in bringing our children closer to God, our Father. Me ke aloha o Akua, Chrislyn A. Villena Director of Religious Education 3

4 PARISH POLICIES AND FEES: All families enrolling their children in the K-12 Religious Education program are first required to register in the Parish. The RE Registration fee is $25.00 per child, with a family rate of $60.00 for three or more children enrolled. If any family cannot make the payment, arrangements can be made with the Coordinator of Religious Education prior to Registration. Students must be registered by the first months of classes to attend in that year unless proof of attendance at another program is presented. Only children registered in the parish religious education program may attend classes. No guests of students will be permitted in the classrooms. ATTENDANCE: Children are to be regular and punctual in attendance. If a child misses classes frequently without a valid reason, the Director of Religious Education and/or teacher will ask to meet with the parents to address the issue. Since teaching time is limited, children are expected to attend all classes and to be on time. Students in the First Communion and Confirmation programs cannot miss more than 4 classes or they will be required to repeat the class the next year. Frequently missing all or part of scheduled sessions does affect a child s religious education. In the Confirmation classes, there is an option to erase an absent class by writing a one-page reaction paper based on a list of selected topics. Confirmation teachers will have a list and a detailed description for reaction papers. 6 If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please feel free to share them with your catechist or call the rectory office ( ) or EXPECTATIONS: PARENTS/GUARDIANS: Parents and guardians are the PRIMARY teachers for faith formation. The family is where the most consistent, effective and long-lasting religious education takes place. Parents share responsibilities for their child s religious education in the following ways: 1. Ensuring that their child attends class regularly and arrives on time. 2. Participating in the parish mass each week with the child. 3. Taking time for family prayer and teaching the child ways to pray. 4. Taking an active role in the parish community. 5. Showing an interest in the child s religious education. 6. Communicating any special needs or circumstances that may affect their child within the classroom. CATECHISTS: 1. Provide a loving Christian atmosphere within the learning environment so that children will be able to grow in their faith as well as feel safe. 2. Prepare and teach a designated curriculum. 3. Be a Christian role model. 4. Communicate regularly with and involve parents in the faith development of their children. STUDENTS: 1. Behave in a Christian manner at all times showing RESPECT and being cooperative with adults and other students. 2. Show RESPECT for others and for others property. 3. Actively participate in classroom activities and discussions and complete assignments. 4. Out of RESPECT all students will be asked to place their cell phones, media players, IPods, etc. on the teacher s desk as they come into the classroom or must be kept OUT of the classroom. 5. Use of tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs is expressly forbidden. FIRST COMMUNION: First Communion is a two year process. Children who have completed first grade of Religious Education may be prepared for First Communion as part of our second grade curriculum. Older students will be placed in 6 an age appropriate grade for one year and then placed in a sacramental preparation class the next year. CONFIRMATION: Candidates should be in high school, preferably in the 9 th, 10 th or 11 th grade, and are required to complete a two-year Confirmation process in the parish. The two year program includes weekly Confirmation class and ministry-service hours. Classes will be held on Saturdays from 5:00-8:00 pm in junction with the parish youth ministry. A candidate must not have more than 4 absences. For the Candidates in Confirmation II class, a day-long retreat requires for their MANDATORY attendance. In addition, a face to face interview with the R.E. Coordinator is scheduled sometime before the sacrament is received. Finally, all students will need to make their confession before their Confirmation Mass. CHILD ABUSE: The Policy on Allegations and incidents of Sexual Misconduct promulgated by the Diocese of Honolulu is incorporated this handbook for reference. A copy of the policy is contained in the handbook, To Offer Healing, To Restore Trust, first published in January 8, This handbook is available from the parish. The Church endorses the mandatory reporting provisions of H.R.S. Chapter 350 concerning child abuse. All Staff members, Teacher/ Catechists, volunteers are required to sign an acknowledgment that they have read and understood the ethical and personal conduct policies of the Diocese of Honolulu. The parish catechetical staff has a moral and legal duty to comply with the law to ensure the welfare of a child and is required to report suspected child abuse. Consistent with diocesan policy, St. Joseph Church will conduct Safe environment training as part of the Religious Education curriculum. A meeting will be held before the class is conducted to provide parents an opportunity to review the safe environment materials. Consent for participation in this program is included in the registration packet. DISCIPLINE AND PROBLEM SOLUTIONS: All students are expected to share in the faith learning experiences of the parish program. If a child s behaviour disrupts the learning process for him or herself or for others, the steps listed below will be followed to ensure that class participation may continue: 7
