Are the holidays a particularly hectic time for me? How can I manage to remain focused on God? Readings for the 3rd Sunday of Advent December 16, 2018 First Reading: Zephaniah 3:14-18a The Lord will sing joyfully because of you. Second Reading: Philippians Rejoice in the Lord always, for the Lord is near. Gospel: Luke 3:10-18 They all asked whether John might be Jesus. Today s good news 7:00 AM Mass in honor of the Sacred Heart by Edith Irizarry 8:30 AM Mildred Reardon by the family Prepare the way of the Lord As the journey of Advent continues, as we prepare to celebrate the nativity of Christ, John the Baptist's call to conversion sounds out in our communities. It is a pressing invitation to open our hearts and to welcome the Son of God Who comes among us to make divine judgement manifest. The Father, writes St. John the Evangelist, does not judge anyone, but has entrusted the power of judgement to the Son, because He is the Son of man. 7:00 AM For deceased members of the Parish 8:30 AM Special Intention for Mary Kenney (Happy Birthday) Liturgy of the Hours (Morning Prayer) at 8:10am (before the 8:30 mass), Mon.-Thu. Holy Days Same as Sundays (7:30am, 9:30am & 11:30am) Holy Day Vigil 7:00pm For Reflection: DEVOTIONS "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths; let every valley be filled, every hill be leveled." Holy Mother Church's message today is that the Savior is coming to the Jerusalem of the Christians, to the Church. And it is today, in the present, that we decide our future destiny. It is with our concrete everyday behavior in this life that we determine our eternal fate. At the end of our days on earth, at the moment of death, we will be evaluated on the basis of our likeness or otherwise to the Baby Who is about to be born in the poor grotto of Bethlehem, because He is the measure God has given humanity. John the Baptist s cry reechoes from generation to generation: prepare the way of the lord, make his paths straight. Through the Gospel John the Baptist continues to speak down the centuries to each generation. His hard clear words bring health to us, the men and women of this day in which even the experience and perception of Christmas often, unfortunately, reflects materialist attitudes. The 'voice' of the great prophet asks us to prepare the way for the coming Lord in the deserts of today, internal and external deserts, thirsting for the water of life which is Christ. Benedict

4 St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church and School FAITH FORMATION First Reconciliation Session First reconciliation will be held Saturday December 15, 2018 at 10:00 am in the church. Bible Study Morning Bible Study will resume on Monday, January 7, 2019 after morning Mass. The book we will be using is Saved by Fr. Mitch Pacwa. Books can be purchased online at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, or Our Sunday Visitor. Question contact the Faith Formation office or Jeanine Zolfaghari at December 9, 2018 Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe December 12th The feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe goes back to the 16th century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story. A poor Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was baptized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-year-old widower, and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady. Juan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared. Eventually the bishop told Juan to have the lady give him a sign. About this same time Juan s uncle became seriously ill. This led poor Juan to try to avoid the lady. Nevertheless the lady found Juan, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bishop in his cape or tilma. Special Gift of six Thanks to Beautiful Knights of chalices Columbus Our K of C Council #5667 held an Advent kick off men's retreat on Saturday 12/1. The council was please to present Fr. Chris with a gift of 6 chalices for St. Teresa church. What a beautiful gift. Thank you, Knights Save the Date December 16th 3 Pm in the church. If you can t make it to the Epcot Candlelight Processional, You can enjoy the Candlelight Choir and School Choir on Sunday, December 16th at Join us for a magnificent Christmas experience. Epiphany Blessing of Houses Fr. Chris and Father Richard will again have the Epiphany Blessing of houses this year. The Epiphany is January 6th. If you wish to have your house blessed please sign the chart in the Gift Shop with name, address and phone number so he can contact you when he plans to come to your home. On December 12, when Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop s presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. On the tilma where the roses had been appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac. Mary s appearance to Juan Diego as one of his people is a powerful reminder that Mary and the God who sent her accept all peoples. In the context of the sometimes rude and cruel treatment of the Indians by the Spaniards, the apparition was a rebuke to the Spaniards and an event of vast significance for the indigenous population. While a number of them had converted before this incident, they now came in droves. According to a contemporary chronicler, nine million Indians became Catholic in a very short time. In these days when we hear so much about God s preferential option for the poor, Our Lady of Guadalupe cries out to us that God s love for and identification with the poor is an age-old truth that stems from the Gospel itself. Quote from Our Lady of Guadalupe: Trust in me: I am your mother". Come One Come All! 5 Second Sunday of Advent Second Week of Advent This week and next, our Gospel readings invite us to consider John the Baptist and his relationship to Jesus. John the Baptist appears in the tradition of the great prophets, preaching repentance and reform to the people of Israel. To affirm this, Luke quotes at length from the prophet Isaiah. John baptizes for repentance and for forgiveness of sins, preparing the way for God's salvation. The three Synoptic Gospels Mark, Matthew, and Luke attest to the importance of the baptism of John in preparing for Jesus. Only the Gospel of Luke, however, extends the connection between these two men to their birth. The first two chapters of Luke's Gospel contain the Infancy Narrative, which tells about the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. The evangelist Luke is the author of the Gospel that bears his name, and he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles as a continuation of the story of Jesus and the Church. In these two works, Luke's sense of time and history emerges. He identifies three epochs of salvation history: the time before Christ, the time of Christ, and the time of the Church and the Holy Spirit. In today's Gospel reading, as elsewhere, John the Baptist is presented as the figure who bridges the time before Christ and prepares the way for Christ's own ministry. In today's Gospel we also note Luke's attention to political and historical detail. Luke shows that salvation is for all people and situated in world events. Therefore, Luke lists the political and religious leaders at the time of John's appearance in the desert. Salvation is understood as God's breaking into this political and social history. John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus, we too are called to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to John's message by repentance and reform of our lives. We are also called to be prophets of Christ, who announce by our lives the coming of the Lord, as John did. Christmas Eve Baby Gifts Cynthia Tomes is starting the planning for the BETA Christmas Eve Mass at 4 PM with the children. Children may bring baby gifts up to the creche. For those that would like to donate a baby gift but won t be at the 4PM Mass, a box will be placed in the lobby starting the first week of December for baby items to be delivered to BETA. Please start thinking about what baby items you may want t0 put in the box for them. Knights of Columbus Christmas Tree Sale The Knights of Columbus will be selling Christmas Trees again this year under the tent by the school field. The trees arrived the day after Thanksgiving (Friday 11/23). The hours for the tree lot will be Monday through Friday from 4 pm- 9 pm and Saturday and Sunday 9 am - 9 pm. 6 Second Sunday of Advent Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11 Growing in Faith We learn a few things as we go through life. We advance in education. We get better at our jobs. We figure out more about politics. We discern what makes people tick. We learn by our mistakes and through the wisdom of others. Our tolerance grows. So does our love. We get wiser in love, more patient with its pains, more grateful for its virtues. We learn throughout our lives. We also grow in faith. As children our faith is simple, but it grows more complex as we age. We appreciate how deep are the promises of God, how profound is the love of Christ, and how much we need forgiveness as well as redemption. God helps us grow in faith. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul expresses his hopes as they prepare for the second coming of Christ. Paul believed that Jesus would return very soon. He had confidence that the Philippians would be all right. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. Just as we grow in wisdom throughout our lives, Paul was confident that the Philippians would grow in faith. As we prepare for Christmas, we have the same reassurance. God, who began a good work in us, will continue it right up to the day of Christ Jesus. May this Advent increase our faith. Written by Paul Turner.
