1 1 Knight Life The Official Pblication of Father Rosensteel Concil #2169 Vol. 68, No. 6, Jne 2002 GRAND KNIGHT S STATION Floyd L. Jarboe A Past Grand Knight recently told me that after my year as Grand Knight, I wold never look at the Concil the same way again. Trer words were never spoken. It has been a year like a mini roller coaster. We have been blessed with so many highs this year, they are hard to cont. The beatifl installation Mass kicked off or year. I can still hear the beatifl sonds of Panis Angelics dring the reflection after commnion. Everyone worked so hard to make or picnic special in Agst. Brother Red Smith again pt together a fine team for or fall Blood and Breakfast Drive. What cold be more joyfl than to see the happy faces of or PGKs at their testimonial after the worst peacetime tragedy ever to strike or contry? The enthsiastic assembly of or Brothers and Sisters along with the Forth Degree Color Corps and Father Dempsey s poignant words at the Candlelight Rosary March and Benediction to the Memorial to the Unborn in October. The Octoberfest was a beer and sasage feast with the msic by Hans and Heide. Deadline for next Knight Life - Jne 20th DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Tin Cao As we entering the last month of this Fraternal Year and of my tenre as yor district depty, I wold like to take this opportnity to thank and congratlate every one of yo for yor dedication to the service to or Holy Mother Chrch, concil, family, commnity and yoth. Serving as yor District Depty is indeed a blessing for me becase I have the opportnity to get to know many of yo. And I am very hmble and thankfl for yor hospitality, friendship, and cortesy. Bt most of all, I am very thankfl for the opportnity to work with yo dring the past two years. The state of or district is very strong. Membership has increased steadily and participation from the members in KOC sponsored events is exceptionally strong. I was so prod to serve yo and I am looking forward to meeting and working with many of yo again in the near ftre. Under new districting plan, the district s yongest concil, Monsignor Thomas Wells concil will do to crrent district 18. This is a good sign that or district has grown. We still have one whole month to go, so I ask yo to work even harder to recrit and recrit. I ask that every one who read this article to pick p the phone (Contined on page 3) We placed third in the State with the Incentive raffle at the Colmbs Day Ball. The next day we chartered a bs in spport of or State Depty who was Grand Marshall at the Colmbs Day Parade in Baltimore. We marched and sang God Bless America and the Color Corps never looked better. Or Concil was blessed this year by the dedication and hard work of Brother Jerry Tfano with the Tootsie Roll sales. For the first time in for years or collections totaled over $10, We had or first children s party for Halloween and the costmes were great. The witch was really cte (First Lady Alicia). The kids had a blast and probably ate too mch candy. In November we said goodbye to many of or dearest friends at or Memorial Commnion Mass and Breakfast. We morn all of or departed Brothers bt Jack Rtledge will always be remembered as a special Knight. The Concil Smoker pt on by the Clbhose was an Epicrean delight. The MaryKnights held their Charity Action and raised over $12, for the Gabriel Project. Brother Tom Mrphy again organized the Food and gift Certi ficat e give away for the needy. December first broght or 81 st Anniversary Dinner Dance. The Knights of Colmbs Sand Dollar designed and procred by First Lady Alicia was exqisite. It was time to replenish blood spplies at the Hospital Center so Brother Red Smith organized another Blood and Breakfast. We feted the seniors and the disabled and Santa came for them and the Children at their party a week later. The Children s party was notable for the living Nativity Play performed by the costmed children. The Ralph Vallone Family chaired these events. The needy Web site - CHAPLAIN S REPORT From the Desk of the Vicar of Christ The Great Pope Pis XII was called to the See of Peter at the beginning of March, 1939, almost at the beginning of the Second World War. I shall never forget the profond impression made pon me when the occasion was offered to see him at close qarters for the first time. It happened dring an adience granted to yong priests and seminarians of the Belgian College. Pis XII went p to each of those present. When he came to me, the Rector of the College said that I came from Poland. The Pope halted for a moment, with evident emotion and repeated, "FROM POLAND." He then said in Polish, "PRAISED BE JESUS CHRIST." That happened in the early months of 1947, little less than two years after the end of the Second World War, which was a terrible trial for Erope and for Poland. On this fortieth anniversary of the beginning of that significant pontificate, we cannot forget how mch Pis XII contribted to the theological preparation of the Second Vatican Concil. So we have a natral debt, a dty to recall the memory of that great sol, in today's prayer to Mary, to whom he was so devoted, as we all well know. John Pal II Pontifex Maxims (Contined on page 6)

3 NEWS FROM SUPREME Knights of Colmbs Ad Calls for Catholics to Spport Faithfl Priests New Haven, CT Major ad campaign rging prayer, spport for priests appearing in national newspapers, magazines. The Knights of Colmbs is lanching a major ad campaign calling for spport, faith and prayers for priests who serve the Catholic Chrch with generosity, dignity and honor. It is a message for nderstanding from people of all faiths, bt especially for Catholics. The campaign begins Snday, May 5, with fll-page ads in newspapers in New York City and Boston, and will be followed with fll-page ads highlighting the same message in national magazines. The message reads: "Every vocation will face challenges. Now is sch a moment for the priesthood. At a time when betrayal by a few has inflicted deep sffering with little solace, or compassion goes to victims and their families. And we stand with the vast majority of priests who serve with generosity, dignity and honor. To those who have remained faithfl, we say Yo still have or faith." "It is important, especially dring times like these, to recognize that there are many good people who are called to serve something greater than themselves," said Knights of Colmbs Spreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. "As sch, we believe it is an important time to encorage the many good priests who serve with great virte and hmility." Knights are known for their respect for the priesthood. In addition to the ads, the organization promotes vocations to the priesthood and religios life throgh scholarships, donations and other forms of assistance. The Knights of Colmbs is the world's largest Catholic service organization, with more than 1.6 million members in nearly 12,000 local concils. It provides members and their families with volnteer opportnities in service to the Catholic Chrch, the commnity, families and yong people. 4 FAMILY OF THE MONTH What better way is there to end the Fraternal Year with the Family of the Month being the biggest Family at or Concil. This Family works every Concil Fnction and Program. The members are always availabl e to lend a hand, cook a meal, set p the Colmbian, Emerald, MaryKnights and Jovenal Rooms. This family sells Tootsie Rolls and brings in Tony Melendez fo r the March for Life Kicko ff Rally. T hey pray at Abortions Centers and help with the Nns Appreciation Dinner and the Seniors Christmas Party. They work all of the Children's Parties at Halloween, Christmas, and Easter. They help at the Concil Picnic, the Smoker, at the Maryland State Concil Convention and every Wednesday at Bingo. They work catering events and cook meals on Family Friday Dinners. They set p and attend every Concil Dance and every Concil meeting. They are very yong and very old. They work for a living and work at home. They go to school and are retired. These are the members of the Fr. Rosensteel Family. The best Family in the whole Knights of Colmbs and Alicia and I are very prod to be members. KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Or Jne Knight of the Month lives in the St. John the Baptist Parish area off New Hampshire Avene. This Knight has two families. His Father and Mother are members of the Concil and the MaryKnights. He lives at home and is a great help to his parents. His other Family is a grop of yong men who meet at the Concil on the second Thrsday of each month. This Knight arranges to have a gest speaker at least every other month for their meetings. The speakers have ranged from Military Officers to Firemen to Car Mechanics. He has organized trips for the yong men to Six Flags Amsement Park, Ocean City, a genine Frank Lloyd Wright Home and is working on a jant to Gettysbrg. He is a friend and mentor to the yong men as well as their leader. He is helping to make this grop of yong into some of the Fr. Rosensteel Knights of tomorrow. Besides his work with or Concil Sqires, he also finds time to help with many of the Pro- Life Activities of or Conty. Most notably his work with Centro Tempyac. A grop that is helping minority women to cope with the pressre society has pt on them to have abortions. I am very prod and pleased to present to yo or Knight of the Month for Jne Br. 6 PRO-LIFE REPORT Charles X. Sraci Despite pblic media, which for the most part spport abortion as the right of women over their own bodies withot any concern for the rights of their pre-born babies, despite massive opposition from a mltimillion dollar abortion indstry that has Planned Parenthood as a front, despite Spreme Cort decisions which contine to leave pre-born and partially-born babies vlnerable to painfl deaths, we Catholics mst not cease or efforts to declare abortion a moral blight and a national scandal. We mst not cease or efforts to confront the evil of abortion in or cities and neighborhoods. Most Reverend Liden Francis Crtiss Archbishop of Omaha, Nebraska In my work as an axiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia, I am particlarly charged with the archdiocese s otreach to other Christians and to members of other religios faiths. Some of the differences within the religios family are not completely srprising, bt I find particlarly sad the division over the need to phold the sanctity of hman life from conception to natral death. In addition, it is very painfl to discover the selfprofessed men and women of faith sit on Planned Parenthood boards or raise fnds for Planned Parenthood s assalt on God s plan for hmanity. In my ecmenical and interreligios work, thedivision among religios people over something as seemingly self-evident as the sanctity of life often makes it hard to motivate Catholics to imitate Pope John Pal II s brilliant efforts to flfill Jess prayer: That all may be one (John 17). Most Reverend Jos eph F. Martino Axiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, PA ROSENSTORKS Congratlations to Br. Pal Mrphy, and his bride Jennifer who gave birth to their second child. Michael Thomas Mrphy was born Thrsday morning, May 23rd, 2002 at Maryland University Hospital. Weighing in at 10 lbs. 5 oz., I m sre he will be keeping older sister Megan great company! 6 SURGE WITH SERVICE! CHURCH ACTIVITIES Wally Horner NUN S APPRECIATION NIGHT A special thanks to all the cooks who did sch a wonderfl job preparing the horsdo vres and sch a delicios meal; to the greeters who welcomed all the sisters with a smile and a hg; for the bartenders for making the finest drinks in the world; and to the servers who served the drinks, the meal, and the dessert to each table, and going ot of their way to meet all of their needs. All the Brother Knights performed in an otstanding manner. Thanks to all of yo for making this appreciation night a night the Sisters will always remember. We have received many letters from the Sisters expressing their appreciation and heartfelt thanks to all of yo. PAROCHIAL SERVICE PROGRAM This committee has reached its goal of $5,000 which has been raised for St. Catherine Labore grade school and trned over to the principal. SUPPORTING THE HISTORIC ST. JOHN CHURCH Or committee was able to raise fnds to prchas e a new carpet rnner (14 ft x 3 ft) for the Chapel at Gerri Bonin s reqest. SUMMER IS HERE Now that smmer is here, don t stop saying yor rosary daily and remember to attend daily Mass when yo can, and of corse every Snday, and receive the Holy Echarist. We have a lot to be thankfl for, so let s keep God in or daily prayers. A THANK YOU Thanks to all the Brother Knights and the people who have donated time and fnds to sccessflly complete or Chrch activities programs. May God Bless yo for yor generosity dring this fraternal year. (Contined from page 1)Grand Knight s Report were again treated to bags of food and Giant Food Gift Certificates. We broght in the New Year with the band Arrow and Six-Foot Sbs from Marchones. We rallied for Life with Tony Melendez and Marched on Janary 22 nd. The MaryKnights celebrated their Anniversary in style late in Janary. We soon celebrated the Sperbowl and in Febrary I was able to ride in the Bacchs Parade at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Or Beach Party was tempered by the loss of or dear friend and brother Fred Horner. We held or third Blood and Breakfast in March and for the year raised over 125 pints of blood. A Leprechan by the name of Mrphy made or St. Patrick s Day Dinner Dance qite enjoyable. The Easter Bnny came on Palm Snday and the following Satrday we gave away or third installment of food baskets and Giant Food Gift Certificates. We celebrated a Third Degree on March 15 th. April broght more Irish msic with Irish Tenor Mark Forrest performing for the MaryKnights special entertainment event. A few weeks later we lost Alicia s Father and the otporing of condolences, cards, Masses, Donations and help was overwhelming. We will always be gratefl to or Father Rosensteel Family who helped s in this hor of need. In May we listened to the world class sonds of the U.S. Concert Band and traveled to Ocean City for the 104 th Annal Convention. We fell short of or goals in the awards department bt we did pll in the First Place Spreme Award for Commnity Activities. Or Pro-Life Team will be heard from next year. The only things left is or election of Officers, the Appreciation Dinner (Jne 23 rd ) and possibly one more Degree. There has been one thing constant for the entire year. The entire Bingo Committee led by Br. Mike Robertson has done a marvelos job. The increase in revene by the Bingo Crew has made many of or programs possible. Their work, week in week ot, has been magnificent. Another big change has been the new Bartender schedle. Br. Ralph Vallone has stabilized the sitation and for the last few months or cash register shortages have been minscle. It has been my pleasre to be yor Grand Knight and I am anxios to be yor Trstee for three years. I will not miss the pressre to get this article ot every month bt I will really miss the great parking spot. Please remember that a concil this size or any size always needs new volnteers to step p and seize the reins of glory and be the next slate of officers. We have two age grops who make p the blk of the demographics of this Concil. One age grop was born between 1915 and The other age grop was born between 1946 and The first grop is wearing ot. It is time for the second grop to psh their way to the top and become the force of this Concil. Vivat Jess!! From Alicia, Laren and Floyd Jarboe God Bless yo all.

7 GENERAL PROGRAMS DGK Frank Marchone Fr. Rosensteel Concil entered two teams in the State Bowling Tornament. One team was comprised of Pal Higgins, Mike Horton, Richard Hmenansky, Vince McGgan, and Bob Wilson. (They bowled against the State Officers and won.) The other team was comprised of Frank Brewary, Nick Britti, John La, Frank Marchone, and Nick Pecoraro. Neither team won first place, bt Mike Horton had high game for the tornament. Congratlations, Mike! Many thanks to Chck Sraci for schedling the Concert Band of America to play at Fr. Rosensteel Concil on Mothers Day. Hopes of having an otdoor concert were dashed with predictions of rain. We hoped to have more people there, bt we had a good trnot and the band was excellent. If yo didn t go to the convention this year, yo missed ot on a lot of fn! Tony Horner and his crew did another fine job. There isn t enogh room in this article to thank everyone for their help, bt special thanks go to all the Horners, Tim Morse, Mike Robertson, Pat Bowles, and Bill & Barbara Dassing. We had excellent weather except for the day of or pool party (canyabelieveit?) We all ate more than we shold and we made some new friends. We even celebrated Tony Horner s birthday! COMMUNITY ACTIVI- TIES Warden Peter Bonin Special Thanks goes ot to all of the Brother Knights, their Ladies, and friends of Father Rosensteel Concil for helping s to be First! in Commnity Activities in the Maryland State Concil this year. This is the sixth year in a row that we have taken that award. We also received first place in the Spreme award, and we will be jdged in the pcoming Spreme Convention, which will be held in Anaheim, CA. in Agst. God Bless and have a great smmer! MARY S WIDOWS On May 6th the reglar monthly lncheon meeting of Mary s Widows took place at the Bedford Cort Restarant in Leisre World. Forty members were in attendance. The ladies had a choice of three entrees: salmon, beef, or chicken. Mary Brew and Alice Fitzgerald were the hostesses. Marion Rck was in charge of the 50/50 which was won by Bill Fenton. Members are looking forward to the next meeting which will be held at the Concil on Jne 3rd. At this time all members of Mary s Widows will be the gest of Fr. Rosensteel Concil. Please let s know if yo will be able to attend. If yor hsband, at the time if his death, was a member in good standing of or Concil, yo are eligible to join s at this lncheon and we welcome yo. Don t forget that members recently voted to do away with the meetings in Janary and Febrary de to ncertain weather conditions. From now on we will meet dring Jly and Agst. On Friday, Jne 7th Holy Mother Chrch celebrates the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jess. This feast is a reminder of all that we owe to the love of or Divine Redeemer. It is an appeal to or gratitde and it shold prompt s to offer to the Divine Heart satisfaction and reparation for the nmeros offenses of which we and others have been gilty.
