1 M essenger A Newsletter of Prince of Peace Ltheran Chrch & Preschool Worship vvvv Connect vvvv Serve The God of New Things I am abot to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do yo not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19 April 2016 ello. My name is Rick and I play video games. Please nderstand. I do not have a basement man cave with a hge TV and srrond-sond speakers where I spend hors immersed in the virtal world. I have never had tendinitis in my thmb from repeatedly pressing bttons on a game controller. However, I enjoy having a game or three on my phone to play when I have downtime. Over the years I ve enjoyed sch classics as Tetris, Yahtzee, Words with Friends and Trivia Crack. A few months back, a friend introdced me to Clash of Clans. Yo may have seen the TV commercials. Clash of Clans is a game involving constrction and destrction. In short, I bild a base with walls and defenses and others attempt to destroy my base sing dragons and wizards and giants (oh my). When I say others, I mean anyone in the world with a wireless device and an internet connection. Of corse, I also have the opportnity to trn their bases into virtal msh. This appeals to my strategic side. Clash of Clans is a team game. My team (clan) has abot 40 members and is international. We have players who hail from Ireland, Iran, Egypt, Canada and all over the USA. We tilize an in-game chat room to coordinate team bsiness. Often, the langage of choice shifts from English to Farsi to Arabic, depending on who is commnicating. H It contines to be a tre cross-cltral experience. The thing I love most abot my team is when or chats shift away from the game to more personal sbjects. I have had conversations with the Iranian contingent abot life in an Islamic nation. I have had conversations with the Irish contingent abot the global economy. As a team we spported a teammate in New York who recently lost his mom. He asked for prayer and we prayed. While I have never met most of these people, I have grown to respect and care abot them. I often wonder if this type of mlti-national commnication is what or world needs to avoid destrctive stereotypes and easy violence. Even more, I believe God is working in the midst of the game to bring abot a little more peace on earth. Perhaps yo are skeptical. God working throgh a video game? Why not? God is always doing new things. Sometimes we try to limit God to the places, sitations and moments that we have deemed holy instead of allowing God to make or entire lives holy. We have no problem discovering God in a chrch sanctary or while watching a snset or while listening to an inspiring piece of msic. On the flip side, we have diminished sight when we attempt to see God working in government offices, bars, sports arenas or throgh social media anywhere we have deemed prely seclar. It does not mean that God is not there; most often it means we fail to look. God is always doing new things, working in the lives of new people and offering new words of encoragement and life. Perhaps what we need most in or lives this Easter season is the resrrection of or imaginations. I have experienced God working in the chat room of a time-wasting video game. I did not expect it and certainly did not look for it ntil it became so obvios I cold not miss it. Now I wonder where else God is working. Enjoy the blessings of Easter! Pastor Rick

2 New Sermon Series Jorney Throgh James (April 17-May 8) Martin Lther once referred to the book of James as an epistle of straw. Throghot his life and writings, Lther strggled with the qestion of whether the book of James shold even be inclded in scriptre. The core of his concern revolved arond what he perceived to be a focs on works (what we do in life to serve God and others). Over for Sndays, we will explore the book of James to see what it says abot faith and life in Here s a thoght perhaps Lther wold have more flly embraced the book if he experienced the world in which we live! Introdcing POP s New Intercessory Prayer Grop Under the gidance of Pastor Rick, POP is forming a new Intercessory Prayer Grop. Or goal is to meet monthly for one hor in the sanctary to pray for the needs of the people of POP, family and friends, or commnity, and the wider world. Yo can participate in two ways: 1. 4 Arcadia Cares: Food for Kidz Second Annal Packathon Assembles Over 73,000 Meals Several hndred volnteers from all over the Arcadia neighborhood and beyond converged on the Prince of Peace gym on Satrday, Febrary 27, to help at the Second Annal Arcadia Cares: Food for Kidz Packathon. The final reslt was simply amazing 73,296 meals were packed. The packathon volnteers participated in assembly-line packing of meals, where they worked for one-hor shifts or longer. The packathon started at 9 a.m. and ended at 1 p.m. Volnteers ranged from To pt the reslts of the packathon into perspective, enogh meals were packed to feed all of the spectators in a 70,000-seat NFL football stadim! ages 3 to 80-pls, and represented a myriad of grops throghot the Arcadia neighborhood, inclding Troop 6 Boy Scots, Daisy, Brownie and Girl Scot troops, chrch, school and bsiness grops, sports teams, entire extended families, and others in the neighborhood looking to do well by doing good. Approximately 400 volnteers worked at stations to assemble the varios ingredients into an indstrial-grade plastic bag. Based on last year s event which assembled 62,000 meals, this year s goal was to pack 70,000 meals. When the dst settled after this year s event, that goal was srpassed 60,768 oatmeal and 12,528 rice and bean meals were packed. Of the meals packed, 80 percent were transported to Valley View Commnity Food Bank for local distribtion in the Phoenix area to shelters and other needy venes. The Food for Kidz organization will ship the remaining meals to international destinations. The Food for Kidz model provides individally packed, highly ntritios and filling meals packed with instant oatmeal and other ingredients for a healthy breakfast meal. In addition to the oatmeal packages, the Arcadia volnteers also packed meals with rice, beans, vitamins and dehydrated vegetables. The meals are reconstitted with water. Each meal provides a day s worth of vitamins and ntrients to enable children to grow p strong and fight off diseases and sickness. This year each rice & beans box was packed with 42 bags (6 meals per bag) for a total of 252 meals per box. Each oatmeal box was packed with 36 bags (8 meals each), for a total of 288 meals per box. Each box will feed one child for 7 months (or longer) at a cost of approximately $35. All of the donations received before and dring the packathon event were sed directly to pay for the ingredients. Pastor Rick Sherrill served as Master of Ceremonies of the event, encoraging the volnteers efforts and annoncing the meal tally after each shift to cheers from the participants. It trly was a neighborhood-wide event and plans are already nderway to coordinate next year s third annal packathon, which will add to the total of 136,000 meals packed dring the first two packathons. On behalf of the Pack-a-Thon Committee (Adrey Cox, Steve Crofton (Chair), Steve Edgar, Kathy Flores, Lynne McGinley, Heidi McNeil Stadenmaier, Jacob Stadenmaier, and Craig Steblay), a special THANK YOU to all Prince of Peace members who assisted in making the Second Annal Packa-Thon a major sccess. 7 Passion Projects are a specific area of service that we focs on for a period of time so we can be more aware of the isses, as well as partner in service with the project. In April and May or Passion Project will be the Navajo Ltheran Mission. Dring the yoth trip to the mission this smmer, the yong people will work on varios service projects arond the commnity. Donations we make will be or way to partner and serve the mission! More than 50 years ago Ltheran Christian missionaries arrived in Rock Point, AZ, a remote village near the For Corners area. They were leased five acres of land on which to bild the Mission. The very first bilding on this land was a combined chrch, clinic and two apartments bilt in early Today Rock Point is a gas station and convenience store, a Landromat and Post Office, High School, a Chapter Hose and Senior Center and 3000 people living on the land in family clans. Food and medical services are still more than 50 miles away and general shopping 115 miles away in New Mexico. The Mission camps provides a charter school site for K-6th grade for 70 children, a Private Christian Kindergarten, Health Clinic Wellness Center, and an ELCA congregation, the Hose of Prayer. News from Maasae Girls School A letter from Naomi Msa I thank God becase of this new year and am very happy becase am doing well in my stdies. I wold like to tell yo abot my corse which I started to take last year In my corse there are many sbjects livestock diseases, pharmacology, parasitology, mathematics, English, poltry, animal ntrition and microbiology. Most people are keeping livestock and they don t have any knowledge abot their livestock so I decide to take this corse so that to help them. I will help them by treat their livestock and advise them on how to move from poor management of their livestock to a better stage. Last year in November I went to Mpwampwa Camps for field practice. I learned many things abot my corse. I hope this year I will go for another field practical becase it s important to have field practices so as to nderstand well in action. Maasae Girls School Now Solar Powered! The Maasae Girls School is now solar powered! The project, completed at a cost of approximately $48,000, ensres that the girls will not have to worry abot freqent electrical power otages that prevented them from stdying in the evening and raised safety concerns. Being located near the eqator, it gets dark year-rond by 6 p.m. which made it difficlt for the girls to complete their stdying. President s Report by Craig Myrmel Recently, a friend of mine asked me for advice concerning his dental office. He and a cople of friends have been bying and operating dental practices as an investment for the past few years. My friend wanted advice on how to bild the practices and make them more sccessfl. Their goal is to own many practices, bild p the prodction, and eventally sell them to a bigger player for a nice profit. My initial advice was to hire the best employees and pay them well. My friend comes from the bsiness world and sees only the bottom line. When his best employees asked for a raise, he asked my advice and I told him to pay them what they are worth. He declined and now is short three of his best workers. From personal experience, I predict that in the coming months he will find prodction decreasing de to having to train new employees. I became a dentist to earn a living, bt another big factor was that I wold be able to help people. Somewhere along the line helping people has taken a back seat to profits, sharing the wealth took a back seat to increasing the bottom line. It appears that throghot the working world, the only goal of a bsiness is the bottom line with little regard for those that make a bsiness sccessfl. I believe in rewarding not only the bsiness owner, bt the people that helped him scceed. As Christians, sholdn't a more level playing field be something we shold all strive for? Maybe it's the greed and not the wealth that makes it so hard to fit throgh the eye of the needle. Levitics 25:39 "If yor brother becomes poor beside yo and sells himself to yo, yo shall not make him serve yo as a slave." Roses to F Larel Edgar for serving on Altar Gild in March and those who donated Easter lillies for Easter worship. Page 7

10 Wellness Committee Tips for Caregivers by Beth Schneider An informal caregiver is anyone, freqently a family member, who provides help to another person. Typically caregivers assist with activities of daily living, provide transportation and help with health or medical concerns. Most caregiving is associated with caring for older persons, bt yonger persons also need care as the reslt of an illness or accident. Care may be needed for either short or extended periods of time, depending pon whether the person receiving care is recperating or gradally getting worse. In 2011 the National Srvey of Caregiving condcted a stdy of caregivers for those 65 and older. It reported that 18 million caregivers provided 1.3 billion hors of care monthly to 9 million older adlts. This nmber contines to increase. Caregiving is stressfl. It is important that caregivers take care of themselves. This incldes eating healthy, getting enogh sleep, exercising reglarly, making time for oneself, and avoiding tobacco and excessive se of alcohol. Signs that a caregiver is sffering from brnot and needs to do more, inclde feeling overwhelmed or constantly worried, always feeling tired, sleeping too little or too mch, gaining or losing weight, becoming easily irritated or angry, feeling sad, experiencing freqent headaches or other physical pain, absing alcohol,. Bashas & Fry s Programs Or qarterly rebate from Fry s for December-Febrary was $155. Or rebate for Febrary from reloading Bashas cards which are also accepted at AJ s Fine Foods and Food City was $68. If yo need a Bashas card that is linked to Prince of Peace, please contact me, Les Holland or the chrch office. Steve Crofton, Coordinator, Bashas & Fry s grocery store programs ; sec@slwplc.com and/or losing interest in activities enjoyed in the past. Sffering from one or more of these is a sign that the time has come to follow the sggestions below. The following sggestions help avoid or cope with caregiver stress. First, begin the discssion of caregiving before the need arises, to determine the expectations of the person needing care and the caregiver. Making decisions relating to caregiving dring a crisis never goes well. Accept help at the onset and don t wait ntil feeling overwhelmed. Make specific sggestions as to what others can do. If people don t volnteer, ask if someone can assme responsibility for specific projects. Focs on the care yo can provide. Remember, there is no sch thing as a perfect caregiver. No one can do everything. Set realistic goals by taking small steps, prioritizing, making lists, and establishing a daily rotine. Perhaps most importantly learn to say no. Organize medical information and make sre legal docments are in order. Get connected with other caregivers and join spport grops. Almost every disease has a spport grop and thanks to the internet, it is relatively easy to locate one in yor locale. Knowing that yo aren t alone helps. Research commnity resorces. Also, it is easy to become so involved with caregiving that yo lose toch with family and friends. Moral spport is as important as the spport received from spport grops. Finally, stay healthy. See yor doctor and be sre that yo are p to date on yor immnizations. Library Reqest The following books were checked ot in 2015 and not retrned. Please help s and retrn any of the books yo find.
