3 All Saints Day All the Faithful Departed we remembered and celebrated this past week. This weekend at the 10:30 am Mass we celebrate the lives of those who have passed this year and we pray they are now counted among the saints. We are all called to be saints that all began at our Baptism. St. Paul reminds us that in Baptism, we die with Christ and as Christ rose from the dead so shall we rise with Him. The life we lead is to reflect our faith and our love. We are to grow as disciples in love of God and neighbor. We are called to share our faith and invite others to embrace the way of Christ. So the mission continues through us and the Church. We offer our thanks to God for all of our beloved who have gone before us. We pray for them and their families who grieve their loss. We commend them to God s gentle and boundless mercy since it is God s desire to have all of His children safely home with Him we pray: Eternal rest grant to them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them May they rest in peace! Most of us know the Ten Commandments maybe not in order but we can get most of them. At the time of Jesus the religious leaders had expanded them a bit (613 to be exact) to create a fence around the Law. The effort was to keep people from breaking the Law and offending God but it just made it all the more cumbersome and impossible. The leadership tried to catch Jesus in a trap with a question about the greatest commandment, but Jesus gave a very simple direct answer that confounded them. Jesus used their daily prayer Love the Lord your God the prayer begins. It also included others And your neighbor as yourself. Loving God must and necessarily includes our neighbor there is no other way around it. These leaders were not open to all that Jesus taught in fact they were closed to Him and everything He said and taught. However, that does not leave us off the hook. Jesus is speaking to us and calling us to love with the same intensity that He has for the Father and the same love for others that He showed during His life. How might we be trying to justify our actions From the Desk Of Fr. John or attitudes with questions in order to excuse ourselves for acting with love? Jesus tries to guide the crowds and his disciples in how to be authentic in their response to God s love and in the practice of their faith. The spiritual leaders had a great responsibility to teach with the authority of Moses. But Jesus points out how they have preached but not practiced. Jesus used another image of how the leaders required so much from the ordinary person They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people s shoulders. Nevertheless, at the same time did not offer any pastoral care or assistance in helping them live out a loving relationship with God But they did not lift a finger to move them. All kinds of marks of respect could be heaped upon a person in a religious leadership position and it appears that these leaders relished these accolades they were all self-serving and really stroked and built up their egos. Jesus calls us all to look carefully at our religious behavior so that we would not do the same things and end up like these leaders. Jesus is the one model. Jesus is the way to the Father. Jesus unveils the truth of how we are called to live. The key to what it means to be a disciple is clearly stated by Jesus The greatest among you must be your servant. Jesus is teaching us that this is the real character of a true disciple. The implication is that the leaders who were so self-serving had really missed what God had called them to be and do. Now we have to look and examine our own attitudes and behaviors and service is at the heart of it all! Half-Day Retreat Saturday, Nov. 11 from 8 am to 12:15 pm in Church. Parish School Auction and Dinner also on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the KC Hall starts at 5:30 pm.

6 Appreciation Reception Maggie Brennan and Father John recognize the Pastoral Care ministers who serve many in our parish. Ministries include visiting the homebound, and those in nursing homes, assisted living, and hospitals; the Ministry of Consolation for the bereaved; nurses handling blood pressure; the Welcome New Parishioners ministry; and the In-Touch Call ministry. Annual Catholic Services Appeal Thank you to those who have already given so generously to the Annual Catholic Services Appeal (ACSA). The theme Go Therefore and Make Disciples focuses on how we can all work together to care for the Church s people by sharing God s gifts. Contributions to ACSA support ministries and services that reach across parish boundaries. Some very important services are beyond the resources of most parishes, including Ss. Peter and Paul. Our assessment/goal is $42,217.
7 St. Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving Collection The St. Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving collection comprises the largest contribution that that the organization receives. Each family is asked to bring a non-perishable food item to the Mass of its choice on the weekends of Nov , Nov , or to Mass on Thanksgiving Day. Please place your items in the bins located at all church doors. Special envelopes will be in the pews on the weekends before and after Thanksgiving. Please place your donations in these envelopes and turn them in to the collection baskets during the weekend Masses. Without your support, the society could not provide services to those in need in our area. Donations provide funds to purchase canned goods, frozen foods, meats, and cleaning and personal supplies when pantry supplies run low. Because of your generous support, our SSVDP works in conjunction with Collinsville Food Pantry (CFP) to pay portions of clients water and utility bills. SSVDP delivers food from our own pantry and CFP s to people who are disabled and/or have no transportation. The SSVDP also provides food to the KC Ladies Auxiliary s Tote Me Home Program, and purchases school supplies for the Collinsville Back to School Program.
