3 A time to be renewed, refreshed, and reborn that is what Lent is all about. It really is a time of preparation for the great feast of Easter to better understand what we are celebrating and then enter it with love and devotion. Therefore, we need to do more than think about who is coming over for Easter or where we will go for the feast. We have to get into the depth of its meaning and purpose. So many of our Holy Days have become holidays missing the depth of meaning or purpose (just think of Halloween). They have started with Christian celebrations of salvation and redemption and yet have slipped into something quite different days off, time to get together, simply fun times. Those all can be good but what are the real meanings and why do we celebrate them is the deeper question. Jesus continued to form his disciples during the Sermon on the Mount of which last Sunday s Gospel gave us another glimpse. Jesus chose to talk about one of our favorite topics money. However, Jesus did it in a rather unique way by beginning with You cannot serve two masters Obviously, He was referring to how money and all that it can buy can easily become the focus of our lives. Even though we seek to gain more of it (money and wealth) to serve our desires and needs we end up serving it! In fact, we can become its slave! However, Jesus urges us to seek first the kingdom of God. Jesus is teaching us to trust and surrender to God s provident and loving care of us His rule over us. Then we will be truly free and happy. Jesus uses the examples of the birds of the air and the lilies of the field to move us in the direction of complete trust in the Lord not in things. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which leads us into the 40 days of preparation for the great Feast of Easter. The First Sunday of Lent always brings us into the desert. For the ancient Hebrew people that was the place of testing would they remain faithful and trusting in the Lord or not was the issue. Many times they succumbed to temptation and cried out against Moses and God! From the Desk Of Fr. John However, the Gospel for this Sunday takes us with Jesus into the desert to confront Satan who has a grip on mankind. Remember how Satan tempted Adam and Eve by planting a doubt in their minds and hearts that God s love was genuine and sincere. God had given a simple command and Satan questioned it basically saying no you will not die go ahead and eat from the tree and you will see! Jesus represents all of us and all people from Adam onward. Jesus wins the victory over Satan by trusting completely in His Father by holding unshakably to His Father s word and not Satan s lies...it is not on bread alone that man lives but on every word that comes from the mouth of God! Christ has won the victory over Satan and we want to know and understand everything about it because it is also about us. As we cling to Christ, we realize our true orientation to God and the way to share in His victory. Our baptism and all the sacraments help us on our way they give us strength and hope against all odds. Prayer is one of the traditional disciplines offered to help us on our Lenten journey. We need to be intentional about our prayer time. It can be community prayer at the Liturgy on the weekend we can make the pledge to be there every Sunday whatever the challenge. It can be private prayer or family time prayer or even joining with others in study and reflection but the bottom line is PRAY. Special Retreat presented by the Cursillo Ministry The Eucharist Real Presence Real Power. Will be March 18 8 am until 12:15 pm. Look for more information in this bulletin. Stations of the Cross Wednesday s at 7 pm Eucharistic Adoration Thursday s all day with closing Benediction and Evening Prayer at 6:30 pm. Baptismal Font should be coming soon but...the font will be the skeleton/frame and internal mechanism not the finished product. Then experts will go to work at finishing it beautifully and artistically it will take time but exciting to watch.

6 Growing As Disciples Through Prayer Have a Truly Life Changing Lent Lent is a Time of Encounter Through Prayer...we encounter Christ, present in the face of every member of our human family Through Fasting...we encounter the obstacles that prevent us from loving God and neighbor Through Almsgiving...we encounter our brothers and sisters around the world, sharing God s gifts with others Encounter Christ...Prayer Spiritual Growth comes from an active prayer life coupled with ongoing formation in our Faith, and the holy season of Lent is an excellent time to focus on this. Coupled with fasting and almsgiving, our spiritual lives can experience a real growth spurt! An activity we will do during Lent is to track our progress in our prayer life. Beginning March 4-5, prayer suggestion cards will be handed out or can be picked up at Mass. The suggested prayer activity can be done during the week. The next weekend return the card to the baskets at the church doors with the time you spent in prayer all prayer, not just the suggested activity. The cards will be tallied and prayer* amounts will be announced in the bulletin and at Masses. Pick up a new card each week. *Prayer time is defined as talking to and being with God through formal prayer or meditation and contemplation, reading and meditating on His Word or other spiritual materials and resources, the Rosary and the Mass. Encounter Those in Need...Rice Bowl That s what the Rice Bowl is all about. By practicing almsgiving during Lent, we can live in solidarity with those whose lives are so difficult because of poverty, violence or lack of opportunity. Our donations to the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl can help countless people achieve a measure of prosperity that allows them to realize their human dignity. CRS is in places (hundreds) where people desperately need hope and a helping hand. Pick up a Rice Bowl join the world in providing help and hope. Best Lent Ever is a free, daily program that can help you have a truly life-changing Lent. This year s program is based on the book we distributed at Christmas--Matthew Kelly s newest bestseller, Resisting Happiness. This book leads readers, in a deeply personal way, to the realization that we cannot get to where we want to go without God. Best Lent Ever can take you on an incredible journey this Lent. Are you ready for a program that inspires you to become the-best-version-ofyourself? Sign up and get ready for your best Lent ever! 1. Visit BestLentEver.com to sign up 2. Beginning Ash Wednesday, participants will receive daily s with practical tips, short inspirational videos from Matthew Kelly, and personal reflections from Dynamic Catholic team members. 3. Participants will discover how to open their hearts to God and do more than just give up chocolate for Lent Encounter obstacles that keep us from God...Fasting Fasting helps us remember that God is the center of our lives that He is in control...not us

7 Easter Egg Giving Basket Protecting God s Children The next protecting God s Children session at Ss. Peter and Paul will be Monday, March 20 at 6:30 pm in Morris Hall. Please call the Parish Office at to register. If you work with children in the parish either as part of your job or as a volunteer, you must attend one of these sessions. SSPP will be doing an Easter Egg Giving Basket again during Lent. On Ash Wednesday there will be an Easter Basket at the front of the church filled with Easter Eggs. Each egg will contain a slip of paper with an item on it that will be used to make Easter baskets for the families we had on our Advent Giving Tree. Items will include things like dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, toilet paper, shower gel, shampoo, etc. There will also be some eggs with cash donations. The money will be used to purchase various items to make the baskets. The items need to be returned by March 19. Please bring them to the Baptismal Room and leave them in the containers marked Easter Baskets. Cash donations should be placed in an envelope marked Easter Baskets and placed in the offering. The RCIA will assemble the Easter Baskets on April 2 and deliver them on April 9. Make sure you pick an egg and donate to our Easter Baskets! If you have any questions, please call Debbie at or or at debbielsanders@gmail.com. RCIA Rite of Sending Congratulations to these RCIA unbaptized Catechumens who are being sent forth during the 8 am Mass on March 5 by Bishop Paprocki at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield: Isebella Amoussou James Benn Miles Crawford Mya Crawford Sydney Crawford Jessica Muffin Hunter Thorpe They will be declared to be The Elect, meaning they are elected by God to be baptized and initiated into the Catholic Church this Easter. Also being recognized by Bishop Paprocki and celebrating their Call to Continuing Conversion are these baptized candidates: Kendra Cunningham Jacob Post Madeleine Kennedy William Kennedy Kandice Unifried We are called to continue to welcome, support, and guide these individuals during their final preparation to receive the sacraments of initiation. Please continue to pray for these candidates. We closed the gift gathering portion of our capital campaign in January and as we move through the next three years, we will continue to keep you updated on the progress of the campaign pledges and our new addition. As of February 24, pledges totaled $2,312,326. Baptism Font Installation to Begin Work continues on the gathering space, office and fellowship hall, as well as the church where the floor is being refinished. One of the next activities you will see in the church is at the Baptismal Font area. The current font will be moved so that the new font can be installed where the current font sits. The new font will have a large basin for children and adult Baptisms and a smaller bowl for infants. Water will cascade from the small bowl into the larger basin. The structure of the font will be delivered around March 10 and it needs to be positioned permanently so that measurements can be made to finish the interior and exterior. Materials for the finishing are still being determined. The work on the new font will continue for a number of weeks.

8 Michele Wasser and Sandy Werner- Jenkins attended Cursillo the weekend of February We are grateful for their yes to God and their openness to the Holy Spirit. The 5th grade class held an open house for parents and other students on February 21 to demonstrate their learnings on force, motion and machines in their science class. Teacher Alyss Lilek challenged the students to use their imaginations as they worked in groups to plan and build simple machines with amazing results! All Confirmation candidates from Ss. Peter and Paul School and PSR gathered on February 26. It was a day of activity and reflection to help them prepare for Confirmation, which will be held on Saturday, March 25 at 4:30 pm Mass.
