3 Congratulations to all our youth who received the Sacrament of Confirmation at the celebration with Bishop Paprocki last Saturday. It is a time of celebration even though we are in the midst of the Holy Season of Lent. We are aware that Christ promised the gift of the Spirit to his disciples. That gift was to empower them to proclaim the Gospel with authority and defend their faith by the witness of their lives. We continue to pray for our youth that these gifts of the Spirit entrusted to them will be used wisely and well. We pray that they will remain ever close to the community of the Church, which will assure that they will live according to God s plan. They are not alone Christ remains with them and sends them forth into the world with the witness of their lives and the living of their faith. Bishop has developed a tradition of singing as a part of his homily. He chose a song using the words of St. Paul Your Grace is enough for Me. Bishop told us that the hymn was sung at the World Youth Day in Poland this past summer and he thought it appropriate for our candidates. The Bishop emphasized that just as with St. Paul, God affirms and confirms us in our faith and will provide all that we need to remain faithful to Him. The Bishop wanted the candidates to always turn to the Lord and trust His grace to help them live and witness their faith. The Elect Catechumens have heard the Gospel lesson of the man born blind and how Jesus gradually led him to a clear and full faith. Jesus opened his eyes but also gave him spiritual insight to see Jesus as the source of light and life. The Elect Catechumens also heard of the difficulties and tests that the blind man had to pass through in order to grow into that faith. Despite all the challenges and even abandonment by family and friends, he remained true to his convictions and growing faith in Jesus. From the Desk Of Fr. John The point is that it is through the waters of Baptism that we are washed clean of our own sinfulness and enlightened by Christ to the truth that He is the Savior of the World and the Light of the World. We now journey to the town of Bethany, which is the home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. We hear that Lazarus has died and been in the tomb for four days. Earlier the two sisters had urged Jesus to come since their brother was seriously ill. Now that Jesus has arrived, Martha goes to meet Him and speaks first by saying Lord, if you had been here my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you. Her faith is limited since she basically sees Jesus as a miracle worker whom God listens to and will do almost anything for Him. Jesus wants to lead Martha and Mary to a deeper faith in Him Jesus says I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. This is the mystery Jesus wants to unfold for His friends and also for us. We can now share in the resurrected life of Christ through faith and baptism. However, we also must respond to the question Jesus poses to His friends Do you believe this? That question is posed to our Elect Catechumens as they approach the waters of Baptism and to us as we renew our baptismal promises on Easter. Jesus is life itself! It is through Him alone that we can share in God s own life. We can also live and witness that life to others and invite them into the community of faith. Palm Sunday and Holy Week will begin next weekend with the blessing and procession with palms at 10:15 am in the gymnasium. We announce to the world our faith in Jesus as our Savior, Lord and King. We seek to join him in his saving passion, death and resurrection through Holy Week into the great feast of Easter.

Our donations to the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl does that and more. For the past few years, our own Society of St. Vincent de Paul has received a $1,000 grant each year from Operation Rice Bowl. Twenty -five percent of the money collected during this Lenten program is returned to organizations within the diocese that provide food to the hungry. Please be generous as you fill your cardboard boxes for Operation Rice Bowl. The money you contribute goes to feed the hungry throughout the world and in our own diocesan communities. The offering will be next weekend April 8-9.
7 Support the St. Vincent de Paul Holy Thursday Collection Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me. Mt. 25:40 The Society of St. Vincent de Paul s (SSVDP) Lenten collection will be taken during Holy Thursday evening Mass. Your generous support has allowed SSVDP to serve the needy of our community for over 70 years. Financial contributions provide those who call for help with food and other supplies. Parishioners, Scouts, and our Youth Group supply the pantry with non-perishable food and give financial assistance throughout the year. When supplies run low, SSVDP purchases needed items. Your contributions allow SSVDP to match Collinsville Food Pantry contributions to pay power and water bills for clients who are in danger of shut-offs. SSVDP also provides items for the KC Ladies Auxiliary s Tote Me Home Program. SSVDP works closing with Collinsville Food Pantry, Township and other agencies to maximize resources for its clients. Because of your support, SSVDP remains in good financial standing, and its members are grateful. Join Catholics Around the World in Solidarity with the Holy Land on Good Friday Every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up in Catholic Churches to support the work of the Franciscans in the Holy Land. Christians there rely heavily on the help that comes to them from this special day in the Church. Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Last year s Good Friday collection: Supported 29 parishes, four homes for orphans and three academic institutions Helped keep schools open for over 10,000 pre-k through Grade 12 students Supported 120 men preparing to be priests or brothers Helped rehabilitate 80 homes for Christian families Provided senior care facilities in Bethlehem and Nazareth Created 1,500 jobs in the Holy Land for Christians Preserved 54 shrines connected with the life of Jesus and the prophets When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land.
8 Have a Truly Life Changing Lent The Word of God is Transforming Chapter 14 of Resisting Happiness by Matthew Kelly is a powerful testament to the transforming power of the Word of God. He discusses how his mentor suggested that he read the Bible every day and the effect it had on his life. Since then, Kelly has been suggesting to others that they do the same starting with the Gospels. The challenge to read a chapter of the Bible every day can change our spiritual lives. Of course, resistance can hold us back. That s why he suggests that we schedule it because he says the most important things are almost never urgent. That s why it s essential that we schedule them. That applies to many activities in our lives. Another spiritual exercise that can be transforming is to read one Gospel beginning to end in one sitting. Even though we may read parts of the Gospels every day, he says that is like watching a movie clip without ever seeing the whole movie. Kelly also points out that in his experience, people who read the Bible regularly make better decisions because the Bible gives us incredible insight into the mind of God. Around the Diocese Lent is a great time to change our habits and make new ones like daily Scripture reading. You can still sign up for Dynamic Catholic s Best Lent Ever daily videos which focus on a chapter of the book. Visit BestLentEver.com. We are asking parishioners to share their reflections on Resisting Happiness don t resist if you haven t already, begin reading a chapter a day during Lent. What Others Are Saying About Resisting Happiness Camille Emig-Hill attributes Matthew Kelly s challenge to read the Scriptures every day to making a huge change in her spiritual life. I heard Matthew Kelly talk about the Pillars of Catholicism about eight years ago. I took him up on the challenge to read a chapter of the Bible, starting with the Gospels, daily for a year. This truly changed my spiritual life in countless ways. I am in awe of the power of the Word of God and how it helped me develop a personal relationship with Jesus. 9 The celebration of Confirmation was held on March 25, with Bishop Thomas Paprocki conferring the Sacrament. Thanks to all who made this a special day for the Confirmation Class and their families, especially 8th Grade teacher Melissa Martin. The Confirmation shields developed by the students are more than artistic. They help them express the meaning of the sacrament and how it will impact their spiritual lives. Upper left: A virtue the student wants to develop. Upper right: A statement of how Confirmation will help them or a prayer to the Holy Spirit. Lower right: The Patron Saint they select, reason for the selection and how they want to be like them. Lower left: Three ways they hope to bring Christ to others. Bottom scroll: Motto the faith statement of how they want to live their lives. Visit the shields in Church and be inspired!
