3 We are still saying Merry Christmas since the season continues until the Baptism of the Lord on January 13. It has been a wonder of celebrations during this time. We prepare for Christmas and then wow it all happens so fast. The Liturgical season helps us to ponder and appreciate the marvel of God s love given to us in Christ Jesus who took to Himself our human nature so that we could become like Him and share His divine life. January 1 st is for our country a secular celebration of the beginning of a new year. We usually reflect on the year that has past and begin to plan what to expect or do for the upcoming year. Our Christian celebration reflects on the Octave/8 th Day of the Christmas celebration the focus is on Mary, the Mother of God. As Christians, we realize that God chose Mary to be the Mother of His only begotten son. She was filled with grace and willingly responded to God s invitation and plan. She embarked upon a journey into the future, not knowing the outcome or the demands that would be placed upon her but she accepted in faith. We might reflect on our trust in the Lord and the mission that He gives us for this year. Let us pray for the grace to respond with loving obedience. From the Desk Of Fr. John feast of Cana the sign of the Messiah providing abundance and claiming His people as His bride. This is such a rich feast including the whole Christmas mystery, helping us to realize the full extent of God s plan to make His love and the gift of redemption and mercy known to all peoples. This whole past year we have been reflecting on what it means to be an intentional disciple and all the implications involved. The Magi responded to the simplest of signs that the Lord had given them in nature. They were moved to seek more of an understanding. They set out which is so very significant moving from where they were and heading into an uncertain future. Moreover, the Lord would bless them for that trust and that movement. The Sacred Scripture (the Word of God revealed) would end up being the key to their journey and discovering what God had in store for them. It would not be just for them, but an encouragement for all who seek a deeper understanding and knowledge of God. The Magi came to Jerusalem and those who should have known seemed to be unconcerned or uninterested in the mystery. But the Scripture God s word opened the path for the Magi to discover Jesus the King of Kings. January 6 was for a time THE celebration of the coming of Christ Jesus. It was eventually joined together with December 25 and the time in between became the days of Christmas extended to Jan. 6. This day was a day of real rejoicing. It was a day of revelation the manifestation of God s only begotten Son and the wonder of how God revealed this mystery. The Eastern part of the Church celebrated the birth of the Lord the visit of the Magi revealed through the star and making Him known to the whole world. The feast also included the baptism of Jesus at the Jordan which revealed the true nature of Jesus and His relationship with the Father...(This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased). However, it also included how the Lord was revealed to His disciples at the wedding We are called to be open and welcoming to others ready to assist them on their journey of life and faith. We are called to witness Christ Jesus in how we live and show the same hospitality and welcome that He has shown to us by His coming and welcoming us to share in His life. Traditionally we have the blessing of homes at the Feast of Epiphany using the year and the initials of the three kings 20-C+M+B-19! MPH Knights of Columbus Chili Cook-Off: Mother of Perpetual Help Knights of Columbus 6625 will hold a Chili Cook-Off on Sunday, January 20 in the MPH Parish Center, 200 N. Lange St., Maryville. Aficionados are encouraged to bring a crock pot full of their favorite chili and enter a taste-testing contest. Have your chili at the Parish Center by 1:45 pm. Doors open at 1:30 pm. Come watch the NFC and AFC Championship Games on the big screen. Cost is $5 per person ($20 per family) to enjoy all the chili entries. The entrance fee is "FREE" for you and your guests if you bring a chili entry. Companions on the Journey is the lunch-time for seniors that is held on the first Monday of each month at the Chiara Center in Springfield. It promotes positive social connections, offers an array of speakers on relevant spiritual topics and encourages people to enjoy the beautiful spaces at the Chiara Center. Lunch is served at 11:30 am, followed by a presentation and discussion. Following the presentation, participants are welcome to stay to walk the grounds or for some quiet reflection. We ask for a $20 fee to honor the support given by the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis who sponsor the Chiara Center. Thank You for Your Support of KC Breakfasts in was a very successful year for the KC Breakfasts. The event has continued to grow since it started in On the third Sunday of most months, the KC hosts the breakfast and shares the proceeds with a local benevolent organization. The breakfast consists of eggs, ham or bacon, sausage, potatoes, biscuits, gravy, pancakes, coffee, milk and orange juice. Guests are welcome to eat as much as they want. After food costs, the beneficiary organization is given two thirds of the proceeds. In 2018, the 3rd degree Council 1712 started to match the amount given to the beneficiary. 8 A new and exciting ministry is starting at Ss. Peter and Paul Parish in January. Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith that runs over 11 weeks. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha sessions focus on three key areas: Food Whether it s a group of friends gathered around a kitchen table, or a quick catch-up over coffee, food has a way of bringing people together. It s no different at Alpha. We start with food, because it s a great way to encourage community and get to know each other. Then a Talk The talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. Generally, 30 minutes long, they explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions such as Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith? Followed by Discussion Probably the most important part of any Alpha is the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There s no obligation to say anything. And there s nothing you can t say. It s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment. Here s more information about this project: When will Divine Mercy Senior Living Community be realized? We can break ground on Divine Mercy once we raise the funds needed to secure bank financing. Alton deanery parishes have a collective goal of $5 million and nearly $2 million has been raised so far in parish campaigns! Bishop Paprocki also has a Major Gift goal to raise a minimum of $2 million. If we remain on-schedule with our overall campaign and raise the necessary funds, we will break ground in the summer of 2019 and open the doors of Divine Mercy in late 2020/early The sooner we reach our goal and move forward with construction, the sooner we can provide a much-needed Catholic senior living community for our local seniors!
