3 Right to Life is just that a right that must be protected and promoted. As Catholic Christians we believe that life is a sacred gift from God and we are created in His image. We also accept the fact that life begins at conception and must be protected from conception until natural death. We join together with thousands across the country this Sunday in a Life Chain to witness our belief and our convictions about life. We witness to others and call them to reflect on this precious gift and pray they will move to also protect and preserve life from its very beginning. Join in the witness today! The harvest is ready and the workers are desperately needed. It was a real experience in Napa Valley several years ago when the weather was about to change and the grapes were at their peak. Harvesting was to happen now or the crop would be lost! We heard that desperation when the generous landowner went out to hire laborers to gather the harvest in the Gospel Parable of last Sunday. The image that Jesus painted was the urgency of the ingathering as well as the generosity of the landowner to those who joined in the gathering. Another truth behind the story is also the reality that we don t earn the kingdom, but that it is given as a gift like the generosity of the landowner. But do we feel that urgency of the harvest or the necessity of joining in the labor to gather it now? The image is of the final gathering into the kingdom and how important it is to invite all to participate and to share in that kingdom. We are to be the gatherers. We are all to call and invite others into that kingdom. Will we carry out our duties and extend that welcome? The scene moves to a more personal family setting today. It is a scene of a dad with his two sons. It is not the story of the Prodigal Son but it has some very important lessons about responding in obedience to the will of the Father. It is a parable that Jesus proposes to religious leaders of which He also invites a From the Desk Of Fr. John response which He will use to reflect upon their attitudes and behavior. The Father in Jesus story is asking his sons to go and work in the vineyard. One of the sons says no at first but then changes his mind and does go and work. The other son says yes but never goes. Then Jesus poses the question to the religious leaders as to which of the sons Did the Father s will. Jesus had created the story to comment on the challenge these leaders had posed about the validity of the ministry and preaching of John the Baptist, which they basically had rejected. John the Baptist who was sent by God came preaching repentance and calling all to turn in obedience to God s will. So when the leaders gave their answer they had to admit that the first son had actually been the obedient one even though he had at first said no. Now Jesus can draw the comparison and make the point. The tax collectors and other sinners readily responded to John s call (they were like the first son who said no but changed his mind) their hearts were changed, they had repented and they now did the Father s will. The leaders, on the other hand, did not listen to John nor did they think they needed to repent they were like the second son who said yes but ended up not responding to the will of the Father. The religious leaders were very involved in temple worship and talked a good game but were they really living the Father s will doing and putting into action the real meaning of their religious ceremonies? At the end of every Mass we are dismissed by the priest or the deacon... Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. It is a sending-forth to live our faith and witness it to others. We must undergo regular conversion so we don t fall into the trap of the religious leaders of Jesus day.

6 Financial Report to Parish Thank you for your generous contributions to the financial needs of our parish. Our overall income, including the school, was down 12% this past year. The decrease is attributable to the parking difficulties relating to the construction, a smaller school enrollment, and the launching of our highly successful Growing, Living, Building Together Capital Campaign. The capital campaign resulted in over $1.2 million dollars collected for the new building. The capital campaign expenses were for Walsh and Associates to assist us in conducting an effective campaign. In addition, we saw an increase of 8% in expenses mainly due to salary increases, personnel changes and increased pension costs. We anticipate a recovery this year, with the completion of the new

7 parking lot and drop off area, resolving personnel changes, and only a slight increase in pension costs. As of June 2017, we continued to be debt free. The main construction was completed in June 2017 with the dedication of our new facility. The total cost for the new building was $3.5 million. However, we are not finished with the improvements we need to make to our complex. To meet the vison we set out in our Master Plan, we are in the process of defining and seeking bids for the remodel/upgrade to the Church basement and Johnson Street parking. We anticipate completing these two large projects by summer of Our Finance Council and Father John conduct regular reviews of our financial reports to ensure we are operating as efficiently as possible in order to reduce costs and continue to provide our parish with needed services. 9 ACSA: A Way to Express Mercy Mercy can be expressed in manways. It can play out in efforts to relieve the suffering of others due to the recent hurricanes. Many have donated to organizations whose charitable apparatus can get the aid to where it s needed. Mercy of this type can be more local in scope where people step up to meet needs of individuals or groups not able to fully meet them on their own. For instance, anyone who has paid college tuition knows how expensive it can be. Well, it takes money to educate seminarians, too, and we certainly need more well-trained priests. The same applies to deacons. Deacons undergo five years of training comparable to a master of theology. Teachers in our Catholic schools are required to continue their training and hone their teaching skills. Catechists, such as those that teach our children in the PSR program, require training. Adult Enrichment Conferences and lay Ecclesial ministry formation programs assist leaders in various parish roles in training for things like the RCIA program, qualified Bible Studies or Faith Enrichment. Other needs include administration and material support for marriage preparation, youth ministries, Totus Tuus, bereavement ministry, Natural Family Planning classes, protecting God s Children training, assistance with building and renovation of parish churches and even financial services such as lowinterest loans to parishes. This is a short list of services available at a diocesan level that are funded by the Annual Catholic Services Appeal. There are 20 offices and 90 ministries in the diocese that offer these programs and services to parishes and people of the diocese so as to make these communities a better place to worship, live and work. (Excerpts from Deacon Jim Homily) Second Collection this weekend for Irma Victims The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has requested that a special collection be held for the victims of Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean and Southeastern U.S. Your donations will support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities and also provide pastoral rebuilding support to impacted dioceses. Please place your donations in the second collection. If you are writing a check, make it payable to Ss. Peter and Paul Church, as all donations will be gathered and sent to the Diocese for distribution to Catholic Charities. You may also donate online at the Catholic Charities website, Come and Join Us!! In honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Ss. Peter and Paul Parish will be blessing the animals of our parishioners. The Blessing of the Animals will be on Friday, October 6 at 1:40 pm on the grass lawn across from the main entrance of the school on N. Morrison. All parishioners and their friendly pets are welcome.
