1 Glorifying God by Reaching, Building, Serving From Randy... July 2018 And then there were two one will be returning from her work in Florida as a children s ministry leader (Jordan Lyon). We commissioned four in June to go to Mexico (Micaiah Becker), Honduras (Winston Perry), Ethiopia (Lauren Holman), and Mongolia (Mahala Becker). Now we prepare to commission two more of our youth: Shane and Savannah Hagewood as they prepare to minister in Jesus name in Chiapas, Mexico. Shane and Savannah will be on mission from July 30 through August 8. As a church, we should acknowledge that God has blessed us with the calling of so many to go out in His name. A word about Revival I have decided to go in a different direction this year. Our Homecoming Sunday will be on Sunday, August 5. The Pope from Pope s Creek, Richard Headley, will be our Homecoming speaker. Following our service our fabulous luncheon will be served in the Family Life Center. Rather than having consecutive nights following our Homecoming, we will be having Wednesday night services on August 8,15, and 22. A free meal will be served before each service and each service will include a guest musical group, a testimony from one of our youth who went on a mission trip, and a speaker. This allows us to worship on Wednesdays and to fellowship around the table while we eat. And with King George Schools starting on August 13, it will get us back in the habit of coming on Wednesday nights. Music Camp is over. Vacation Bible School is on the way Thank you to all who provide leadership and volunteer for these important outreach events. The children love it. The parents know their children are loved. And the volunteers are well, worn out. And in it all, our God is honored. Thanks to the team of folks who build and take down for Music Camp only to put up and take down for VBS. Guys, you are appreciated! Vacation Bible School July :00 8:00 pm FREE supper starts at 5pm Classes available for nursery adult Each night: Music, Missions, Crafts, Games, Bible Lesson Preregister on Sunday, July 1 and July 8. Preregistration is not required.

2 Lee Frank: Shiloh s Patriarch by Cindy Miller ack in 2009, we wrote about Lee Frank. He is back in B the spotlight again. At our Memorial Day service, we recognized both Lee s father, Andrew Jeremiah Frank, who served during World War I, and his grandson Staff Sergeant Robert Burge, USMC (retired), who spoke at that service. Two Sundays later, Father s Day, Lee is recognized as Shiloh s oldest father. He may be the oldest, but that mind is as sharp as ever. About Lee. His maternal great grandfather, Eldred Lee ( ), was one of the founders of Shiloh Baptist Church. His mother, Hattie Lee Frank, was pregnant with him while she sang in the choir every Sunday. Lee told us many times he was going to Shiloh before he was born. He was born to Andrew and Hattie in 1926 in the parlor of the house he lives in now. When you visit Lee, you ll find him sitting in his oversized recliner in that same room, now a living room. His farm is the family farm his grandparents, Ira Franklin Lee and Mary Ella King Lee moved to in the 1890s. Lee began first grade in 1932 at Shiloh Elementary School, off of Route 3 not far from the church. He and his sister, Mary Lou, walked to school every day. His first-grade teacher was Miss Thelma DeAtley [who taught as late as the early 1960s]. Another teacher was Miss Mae Gouldman. The principal was Miss Kate Owens [aunt to Stanley Owens, Mary Burnley s husband]. Lee has unforgettable recollections of Miss Kate: When a boy misbehaved, she made him go in the woods and cut his own switch; then she d whip him. Lee s own mother was a private schoolteacher who taught children in their homes. She taught the Rollins children who lived at Nanzatico. During Shiloh s annual protracted meetings, Lee accepted Christ as his Savior. Rev. Clifton Storke baptized him at Colonial Beach Baptist Church in Lee remembered Rev. Storke as a wonderful person, one of the kindest persons he has ever known. Lee recalls Rev. Storke s wife, Malsena: She was such a nice lady and so good to my grandmother, Mary Ella, who was laid up in bed. Mrs. Storke would come over and help with Grandma until her death in Lee remembers the church fire in 1942 on Monday morning, the day after Easter: Cousin Irvin Franklin and Clifton Jenkins [Garnett Jenkins brother] were planting potatoes and saw smoke in the woods. We checked it out; John Edwards [Ollie King s father] was over at my other grandmother s place where the broom straw covering the field was burning. John was over there by himself fighting the fire with a pine brush. If it hadn t been for him, grandma s house may have burned down. John said to go up to Route 301, where Uncle Edwin [Frank] and Roger Arnold were building a barn. I drove over there and picked them up and brought them to the fire. By that time, Shiloh Church had caught fire. Mr. Storke was at the parsonage, and he was trying to move his beehives and became overheated, and it almost did him in. The fire had gone from Salem Church Road at 1:00 p.m. in the day and, by evening, had moved to Potomac Beach. The fire went rapidly through the tops of the pine trees like they were made of gasoline. Damage to the church was not as extensive as we had thought; however, parts of the gallery burned. That was our first church building. Lee graduated from King George High School in Soon after, he registered for the draft and was given a 6- month hardship deferment, although he never had to serve because World War II was soon over. His deferment was based on the health problems his father had from battle wounds he received during World War I. For the next 10 years, Lee worked the family farm and sowed a few wild oats of his own in neighboring Colonial Beach with the help of his cousins and friends. He said, We d go down there and have a ball; but it didn t make any difference whether I got home at 2 or 3 o clock in the morning, I was always expected to be up on Sunday mornings and take my mother to church. I respected her so much. She never heard me say a bad word in my life. In 1953, Lee married Joyce Powell. They were married for 29 years and had two daughters: Shirley Ann and Linda Lee. Sadly, in July 1970, Linda Lee died unexpectedly at age 14; at the same time, Joyce was suffering from multiple sclerosis; and Lee passionately took good care of her until she died in On October 1, 1986, Lee retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, and two days later happily married Orpha, who passed away in He has two grandchildren, Melissa (a nurse) and Robert, and four great-grandchildren. Lee has always had the presence of Christ in his life to guide him through turmoil. He passed along this advice that is as true today as back in 2009: When you have difficulties, keep your faith in the Lord and pray. A little prayer goes a long way. He answers all your prayers not in your time but in His time.

3 Youth Group By Cathy Lyon & Stephen Hagewood VBS is July 9-13 and all youth are invited! We will be helping to lead music as VBS kicks off each night. A music practice will be held on July 8th immediately following service (lunch will be provided). Following music, the youth will continue the VBS fun with games, crafts, and Bible study. We hope to see you there! Please continue to be in prayer for our teens this month as we not only have teens all over the world serving in missions but we will also have teens at Camp Piankatank July Save the date! August 12th we will be hosting a back to school backyard games picnic and the rising 6th graders are invited to join us! More details to come! Music News By Barbara Perry Wow, June really flew by! Music Camp was absolutely amazing!! We had over 42 kids participate, 8 plus youth and countless adults helping. What a great outreach for Shiloh! For July we are looking forward to Vacation Bible School and some fun music. The youth will be helping to lead music this year. We are so fortunate to have so many people involved in our music programs. It is never too late to join, so check us out over the summer. Sounds of Praise meets at 7:00 on Wednesdays during the summer. Women of Shiloh By Brenda Hastings Shiloh GALS Amazing Race Ready? Set! GO!! The GALS will have their first Amazing Race on Saturday, July 28 th beginning at 9:00 am. This event is open to all ladies. Please sign up at the missions table with your name, t-shirt size, favorite color and if you can be a driver. That morning, teams will be formed with 3-4 people in each team. Each team will receive clues to go to a location. At the location, they will have a task to complete. Once that task is complete, they will get another envelope for the next location. The first team back wins the race, but we're giving out lots of prizes! Each team needs to have a driver, so if you can drive, please indicate that you can drive and can take 4 people in your car (that includes the driver). All checkpoints will be in King George County. Each checkpoint will have a recognizable person there to greet you. Bring your phones for pictures!! There will be prizes for crazy pictures! Bring a Friend! What a great way to introduce your friends to Shiloh. Just make sure to sign them up. However, we should have room for those few who don t sign up. Celebration Picnic We ll end the race at noon with a picnic at the church. All food will be provided. Sign up deadline is July 22 nd.
