1 CUMC Newsletter February 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: February begins our walk with Christ toward Holy Week and an opportunity to contemplate once again the meaning of Lent. For Christians, Lent provides an opportunity for reflection. It s a time Sermon Series February 4 Jesus Secret Weapon February 11 Redacted Religiosity February 14 Ash Wednesday when we re encouraged to trace the footsteps of Jesus. In one sense it s a solemn time. The curtain rises on Ash Wednesday, a day that is marked with penitence. It s a time when we share Paul s ambition: I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, by becoming like him in his death (Philippians 3:10). Our Lenten journey takes us to Gethsemane, to betrayal, rejection, and crucifixion. And yet, Lent is also a time for gladness and inspiration. The concluding chapter is an open tomb and a shout of acclamation. Through the darkness we come to the glorious light of Easter day and the wonder of resurrection. Journey s end is a glorified Savior proclaiming, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-19). Come let us sit at the feet of the Master, see the world and its need February 18 To Hell and Back through those eyes of compassion, discover afresh that all-inclusive invitation to follow, stand in awe under the shadow of the cross, and exult in the glory and wonder of resurrection. Jesus invites us not only to a journey of devotion but also to an exciting adventure in thought. Traveling with Jesus is not for the faint February 25 Having It Your Jesus Way hearted. It s to leave the comfortable coastal harbor that the trembling vessels I want to know Christ yes, to know of our lives long to hug, and to put out boldly into the depths of the sea of thought and truth and be carried out of our depths. Our only security is Christ, the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, Philippians 3:10 Continued on page 2 1

2 and our only hope is God s free grace. But by having the inner courage and determination to make this journey, we make new discoveries about our Savior and ourselves, and the wonder of death and resurrection is made all the more complete. I invite you to come with us on the journey. We begin our forty-day journey with ashes distributed on Ash Wednesday, February 14 at 7:00 PM. We will continue the journey each Sunday through Easter. We will see how Christ was betrayed on Maundy Thursday and crucified on Good Friday. Then we will celebrate with joy at His resurrection on Easter morn. Are you ready for the journey? 3 Member of the Month 80th Birthday Congratulations Marcella! You re our Member of the Month! Great grandchildren: Bryce Schondelmyer, 13; Brody Schondelmyer, 10; Sidney Sprada, 10; Blake Sprada, 8; Cam Rose, 1. Marcella, with daughter Shelly Black and son Mark Richardson. Marcella has been an active member at Community United Methodist Church since She has had two of her granddaughters married at Community. And, three granddaughters and four great-granddaughters have attended Community Preschool. Marcella Richardson Grewe was born on February 6, 1934 in Summerville, Ohio. She was one of four daughters of David and Edna Kenworthy. Her sisters are Helen Hufford, Dorothy Dillon and Norma Ruth Cooper. In 1954, she married Charles Richardson. They have a son, Mark, and a daughter, Shelly. Charles passed away in She married her second husband, John Grewe in 1993, and he passed away in Marcella has lived at 12 Oslo Court in Brookville for over 50 years. Marcella s children are Mark Richardson of Brookville, Ohio and Shelly Black of Farmerville, Ohio. Mark and Julie have three daughters: Amy (Jason Schondelmyer) of Arcanum, Angie (Brian Sprada) of Brookville, and Nicole (Bobby Rose) also of Brookville. They have five grandchildren: Bryce and Brody Schondelmyer, Sydney and Blake Sprada, and Cam Rose. (Her granddaughter, Angie, is the nurse for Brookville School.) Shelly and husband, John Black, have two daughters: Katie and Savannah. Katie will graduate later this year from Wright State and be married in June. Savannah is a freshman at Valley View and is in the marching band. For many years Marcella managed the World Bazaar in the Salem Mall. After retiring from there, she held home parties selling Cookin the American Way. Marcella has also worked with the elderly, helping in their homes. Marcella hobbies include tending to butterfly bushes, growing roses and reading. She loves her dog, Happy. She takes pride in hearing her granddaughter, Katie Black, sing. Marcella is an avid patron of the Brookville Community Theater. She has been to many Christian music concerts such as the Gaithers. 4 Saturday Bible School All children (ages 4-12) are invited to participate in Saturday Bible School on March 3, We will be learning about Moses leading his people out of Egypt and their celebration for remembering the Passover. We will sing songs, make a craft project, play games and have a light lunch. Children can be dropped off at the Fellowship Hall in the basement at 10:00 a.m. Younger toddlers can come when accompanied by a relative who will stay for the school. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to participate with the children. If children come alone, a relative must sign in the child and return by 11:30 a.m. for pick up. They have, also, formed a security committee to look at different ways to keep our congregation and children secure. Watch for new updates.
