1 From Randy... As a kid one of my favorite western shows on TV was The Lone Ranger. So, I was surprised to hear that the Youth Christmas Musical was The Lone Ranger. Then I discovered it was actually called The Loaned Manger. Then I understood. The manger and the gift it contained, the baby Jesus, was actually on loan to us. For Jesus has now returned to His heavenly throne and we await His second coming. The Loaned Manger will be presented on Saturday, December 1 at 4 pm and on Sunday, December 2 at 11 am. A listing of all of our December services can be found at the bottom of the page. Come, be supportive of our December services, and invite your friends. Be a part of the Christmas Caroling Choir on, December 19. If you can t sing, you can drive or hold a flash light or hold open a door. Like last year we will travel as one group to the homes of some who are not able to attend church. We will depart the church at 5:30 pm and we will return around 7:15 pm to enjoy a meal prepared by Wendy Moore. We will start off the year of 2019 with Communion on Sunday, January 6. Let s begin the New Year by gathering for worship and proclaiming the Lord s death until he comes (1 Cor. 11:26). This newsletter is a combination of both December (2018) and January (2019). 2 There will be one less Christmas card this year by Joe Parker or over 32 years, we F have always looked forward to our Christmas card from a very special lady we met over 44 years ago. Many of you probably remember her well when she was a member of Shiloh. She and her husband actually lived directly across the street from the church. For about 12 years, they lived in the neat looking brick Cape Cod-style home with the large fiberglass shoe that was reminiscent of the fairytale story about The Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe. Reverend Ted Reynolds served as our pastor in the 1950s and built the shoe for his two daughters. For many years, it served as sort of a landmark to the many folks that traveled Route 3. Yep, some of you already know the answer. That very special petite lady was named Christine Joyner Chris Meade and she was the wife of Rev. James C. Meade. Pastor Meade and Chris faithfully served Shiloh for 12 years. The selection of Pastor Meade was approved on December 20, 1972, at a special business meeting. The two of them were a team from the start. Both of them were extremely active in missions work, and together they led Shiloh to be among the top churches in the Rappahannock Association in supporting the Associational mission efforts. For many years, Chris served the WMU in various capacities; she taught special Bible classes, and she and the Pastor would annually serve as messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention. Whenever there was sickness, health issues, or problems, Mrs. Meade was always there to lend a helping hand. Upon learning of her passing, Lee Frank immediately remarked to his daughter, Shirley, how much he had depended on her whenever his job required him to be at Dahlgren and he couldn t find anyone to stay with his gravely ill wife. This serves as only one example of how she quietly went about her own personal mission within our church family. She was our Visiting Angel in Residence, a most fitting description. While Chris devoted her attention to the WMU, Pastor Meade focused on the RAs and the biggest highlight of the year was their annual trip to the University of Richmond where thousands of young men had the opportunity to see and hear an extraordinary program complete with special music, entertainment, and highly qualified motivational speakers. Of course the box lunch from Church s Fried Chicken was extremely welcomed because about half way through the program the aroma of stacks and stacks of boxed fried chicken permeated every nook and cranny of the stadium. The final highlight of the day was getting to sit in the stands on a crisp, cool fall afternoon and watch the Richmond Spiders take on another college team. Sad to say, regardless of all the support from the thousands of RAs, the Spiders usually failed to win. During Pastor Meade s tenure, he led us through the construction of the educational complex on the right side of the church. Chris was elected and served as part of the building committee and together with the other members of the team helped in the design and layout of the new facility. It s not every day that you get the opportunity to show up in a big way for the people that mean the most to you. Saturday [Oct. 13] was the most perfect and beautiful day, made all the more so by my grandmother s presence and participation in my wedding ceremony. When asked if she was nervous at all about speaking, she said no, she was just so honored. Today [Oct. 17], I had the opportunity to show up for her and to experience the honor of being there when she passed away peacefully. I can t thank her enough for her presence and example in my life. While I am sad, I am also just so honored to have played even the tiniest part in her great adventure. Joanna Meade (photo courtesy of Cast83) The years flew by swiftly. On July 20, 1985, a retirement party was held for Mr. and Mrs. Meade, commemorating his 40 years in the ministry. Pastor Meade was presented with a plaque that listed each location of service, along with other mementoes that were provided to both of them for their 12 dedicated years of service to Shiloh. However, this was not the end of their adventures together through life. They were looking forward to moving into their new home in Matoaca, which is in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Of course, Pastor Meade soon found another church in the area where he served faithfully until his death on October 23, Through her strong faith in God, Chris continued to serve her church and even picked up a part-time job that lasted 19 years as the hostess at the Colonial Heights Chick-fil-A. She was completely at home with people she loved and provided them with free samples of chicken. As the title states, There Will Be One Less Christmas Card This Year. Our beloved friend for so many years went home to be with the Lord on, October 17, No doubt there was jubilation and fond reunions taking place in Heaven on that day. Although we may not receive a card from her this year, we ll remember her fondly when we view the first snowflake and see and hear the sounds of Christmas. We ll know the two of them will be singing and rejoicing all over Heaven.

See Barbara Aikey for more details. Lottie Moon Offering for International Missions -- Every Church. Every Nation. It s more than a catch phrase. It s at the core of what we do. We believe every church and every church member has a critical role to play in bringing the gospel to the world. Your church s participation in the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering is a key part of that. Your Gifts Transform Lives Because you and your church give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, IMB missionaries can take the gospel to unreached peoples around the world. Every dollar you give makes a difference, because 100% of the money collected goes to the work of reaching every nation. The Story of Lottie Moon In the 1800s, a missionary named Lottie Moon wrote letters from China urging American churches to fund more overseas workers. After Lottie s death on the mission field, an offering was started in her name. The offering was established to empower international missions efforts for Southern Baptists.

4 Sunday School By Gail Davis This month we celebrate the birthday of a King...our King...King Jesus. The problem is we don t think of him in terms of Kingship. We think tiny baby in a manger with farm animals and camels... Away in a Manger...far, far away. How can such a wee one be a King?...Our King? Jesus grew up in a small town surrounded by brothers and sisters, friends and family just like us. He learned to be a carpenter, he studied the Torah, he listened and he learned man s ways because he was human. But he is also God revealed to us through him. He behaved, he was good, he listened to Mary and Joseph, the ones God desired to be Jesus earthly guardians, but he also listened to God, His true Father. He studied God s word so that he knew God s plan for him. When he outgrew his baby ways he became the example of how God wants us to live and love. He became mighty in spirit, obedient to his Father, willing to give all he had because this little baby, now a man, loved and still loves each and every one of us individually. By following Gods plan, this little baby became Our King, the perfect one to rule this world and each of us if we will let him rule in our hearts so that we can live full and meaningful lives and love each other, giving ourselves to the work God has planned for us, as individuals and as his church. But how do we know his plan... we study, we pray. Sunday School is where we study and pray together, fellowship with likeminded friends and family, and grow in knowledge and understanding of God s plan of salvation and his plan for our lives. Come, be a part of the kingdom where Jesus the tiny baby is now our King. Sunday School meets at Shiloh every Sunday morning at 9:45. Music News By Barbara Perry What a wonderful time we are having in music at Shiloh! The youth will present their Christmas musical, The Loaned Manger, on the first weekend of December. The adults will present their Cantata, Little Lion Little Lamb on December 16 and the children will present the Christmas story on December 23. There s a little something for everyone so we hope to see you here!! Church Resource Center By Diana Moore The books reviewed by Gail Davis last month are now in the library. There are five in the Michael Phillips series "The Journals of Corrie Belle Hollister". Another new book is "Heaven Changes Everything - The Rest of Our Story" by Todd and Sonja Burpo, the parents of Colton whose story was told in the best seller " Heaven is for Real". Rev.
