1 The Shiloh February 2013 Glorifying God by Reaching, Building, Serving FEBRUARY MISSION FOCUS SENIOR CITIZENS AND THE HOMEBOUND According to the King George County 2010 Census, 11.3% are 65 years old or older. Just think about what those over 65 have experienced in their life time...from party-line phones to individual cell phones, from computers that took up a whole room to those that will fit in your pocket. This group has also fought many wars, not only on the battlefields but also on their knees! This month s mission focus is on our Senior Citizens and Shut -ins. Not only for those within our congregation, but also those around us. Please pray specifically for our senior citizens and shut-ins of our church and community. Our project? Please take the time to make (or purchase) a card for someone in our focus group to let them know you are thinking of them! Either send it directly, or, you may place it in the basket on the table next to the water fountain behind the sanctuary. Those that are dropped off at the church will be delivered the last week of February, so we will collect them until February 24. By: Diana Moore February makes us think of "LOVE". The library team has been searching the shelves for books about Love - God's Love for us and our Love for others. These are on display in the library and on the shelves by the choir room. Many of you have noticed the resources on display in the Family Life Center. These are all either outdated or duplicate materials that are looking for a new home where they will be cherished. Few of us still have 8-tracks or Betas but several of you could still enjoy cassette and VHS tapes. We are slowly switching the library to CDs and DVDs. Please help yourselves to anything on the table. LIVING in the LOVE of the LORD Psalm 1: 1-6 How do we live in the presence, with the reality of the love of the Lord? The Psalmist says, blessed is he.. Look around who or what is influencing you (v.1-2) We have two possibilities of influence on our lives; godly or ungodly. Where is the influence in your life coming from? Look inside what are you becoming (v.2-4) Ask yourself a question, Who am I becoming? Or maybe a better way to ask ourselves is who have I become. Are you the person you want to be? Look ahead how will you be judged (v.5-6) Not how do people judge you, although there is enough of that going around, but how will you be judged by God. The Psalmist wants us to know we can live in the presence of God s love, beginning with Godly influence. Godly influence leads to Godly character. Godly influence leading to Godly character will lead us to be able to stand in the day of judgment. How do we obtain all of this; by meditating on the holy scriptures, saying yes to our Lord s leadership in our lives, and not forgetting to be in the fellowship of God s people. In 2013 let us focus on living in the love of the Lord. Church First 2013 Faithfully, Pastor Mike

2 This is a continuing series of articles, spotlighting our Sunday School classes. Last month, we highlighted the Betty Parker Senior Ladies and Senior Men Sunday School classes. This month, we are featuring the Joyful Sisters and the Coed II adult classes. Meet the Joyful Sisters and the Coed II adult classes The Joyful Sisters class teachers are Earlene Jessee and Joan Turner. This is a women s intergenerational class connecting to God and one another through intentional supportive relationships. Here s what they say: Explore the Bible LifeWay studies help us grow in our understanding of God s Word and how it applies to our lives. We seek ways to serve the church and community as we minister and share the love of Christ, and we laugh a lot. The Coed II adult class teachers are Phil Lehman and Rod Parker. Until recently, Rod Meade taught the class. Here s what they say: The focus of the Coed II study is LifeWay s MasterWork, which provides a deeper spiritual insight and daily personal study. Authors, such as Billy Graham, Beth Moore, and Charles Stanley, guide us through Biblebased, life-applicable lessons from God s Word that offer pertinent, practical messages that adults will find uplifting and enriching. For further information on these classes and others, contact Gail Davis, Shiloh s Sunday School team leader. 2 Joyful Sisters (l to r) Hazel Jones, Earlene Jessee, Virginia Jenkins, Joan Turner, Nella Vance (in blue), Cathy Gebstadt, Pam Hall, Cathy Lyon, Julia Lumpkin, Gloria Tubbs, Dorothy McGinniss, Patsy Edwards, and Sharon Band. 3 Children s Ministry News Rev. Ray Tubbs, Jr. Children s Minister Well we are off and running in Wednesday nights Missions with the children has started off great. The children have been learning about missions in Montreal, Canada. Our Missionary focus is the Avakian Family and the Vining Family. Come out and join us for this wonderful time of Missions learning on Wednesday nights. The Bible Adventure we planned in February has been postponed until a later date. Vacation Bible School is fast approaching. The dates for VBS are June 23 rd 27 th. On Saturday, February 16 th we will be having our VBS workshop from 9 to 10:30 in the morning. The theme will be unveiled as well as the sign up for all the teaching positions. We will sample some of the snacks, get to see some of the crafts, review each days lessons, see the new schedule format we will be doing, and most importantly you will be able to sign up first for where God has intended you to be during VBS. Last year we had 156 students enrolled alone from the babies to the adult class. That s not counting workers. We need everybody s help to Reach, Build, Serve for this years VBS. Plan on coming out to the workshop. Quarterly Business Meeting Reminder Following Worship Service on Sunday, February 17, 2013, there will be a potluck luncheon and fellowship followed by our quarterly business meeting. Music News Barbara Perry Music Minister Now is the perfect time to join a choir! We are starting music for the Easter season and need your voices. The Sounds of Praise adult choir practices each Wednesday evening at 7:15 p.m. and it is a great time. We prepare music for the weekly service and special presentations. The Easter presentation is called "Upon this Rock" and we will sing it on Easter Sunday; so come out for music, fellowship and to share your gifts! Each third Sunday of the month, the children's choirs sing. The 2nd thru 7th graders are working on two to three part music with Jennifer Hagewood, Angela Clatterbuck and Meredith Busic. The kids are hard workers and looking forward to sharing their songs with the congregation. The little choir is learning a song on the new "Orff" instruments. They are so excited to play the instruments and their little singing voices are really blooming. The music and children's ministry are looking toward the summer and planning a children's musical. July 22-26, we will have music camp from 9am-Noon. Each day your children will be preparing for the musical. We are hoping for lots of children and we will need helpers as well. If you are available to help that week please let me or Ray Tubbs know. 4 Jim Reger, Youth Minister To be in tune with God takes our whole self. It means giving our hearts to Jesus, knowing God through His Word, and living out our faith with others. In the Youth Ministry we have been stressing the importance of living out our faithwhat it means, what it does, and how to do it. Accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior is just the beginning of our journey. Our faith is an active faith. It is a faith that begins with a personal relationship with Jesus and is then expressed by serving others with love, compassion, and truth. Sundays at 4pm we have begun a discussion of the spiritual disciplines. Wednesday night at 6pm discussion continues in the Book of Matthew. Youth Ministry Help: 1.)
