1 The Shiloh May 2013 Glorifying God by Reaching, Building, Serving From The Pastor... SERVE THE LORD WITH GLADNESS Psalm 100:2 Sometimes I think the month of May is service month. With Mothers Day, Law Enforcement and Memorial Days, Shiloh sets aside time to remember, honor, uplift people who personally and collectively serve us and so many others. We have all been impacted by the service of significant people in our lives. Calling yourself a Christian brings with it the duty and the privilege of a lifetime of service. Jesus said, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). This doesn't mean we have to die to show our love for our friends. We lay down our lives every time we put someone else's needs before our own. And the "friends" mentioned in the scripture above can be understood to be everyone we meet, since Jesus also commanded us to "love one another." We lay down our lives through service. Believers have many opportunities to serve. We can do small acts of kindness for our neighbors, take part in community service, fulfill responsibilities within our local congregations or contribute to Shiloh s mission efforts. These actions, whether great or small, let us feel the happiness of connecting with our brothers and sisters and remind us that God often allows us to be the answer to someone else s prayers. Let this month find each of us serving our Lord with gladness. Faithfully, Pastor Mike Active Duty Personnel and Veterans Photos Requested for Memorial Day Service On Sunday, May 26, we will have our annual Memorial Day honors. If you have not done so, please bring in your military photos to be included in our DVD, Shiloh Remembers, and our military exhibit. Showing your photo is one of the ways Shiloh honors those who made the supreme sacrifice. The deadline for submissions is May 17. Provide photos to Cindy Miller. Contact her at or ckmiller@va.metrocast.net. Table Hostesses are creating individual table settings to express their legacy of faith. With teapots prepared and a string of pearls of reflective stories, they will excitedly await your arrival on Saturday, May 18, 2013, 2:00 4:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church Family Life Center Make your reservations now! Contact the church office (540) or office@kgshiloh.org Theme: A STRING OF PEARLS Scripture: The Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, when he found one pearl of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. Matthew 13:45-46 NAS Highlights: Afternoon Tea Time Pearls of Wisdom Humor String Strengthening Prayer Women s Tea Pearl Drop Scared Dancers Pearly Gate Singers Door Prizes Donations will be accepted for Relay For Life and recognition given to cancer survivors attending! A Mother s Pearls Speaker: Dr. Lynne Stockman Dr. Lynne Stockman is a full-time family physician with Bayview Physicians Group, northern Suffolk and mother of 3 children Andrew 18, Jordan 16, and Lyndsay 12. She is married to Thomas Stockman who is a retired Chaplain. Dr. Stockman did her undergraduate studies at Mary Washington College, medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and her residency at Riverside Medical Center, Newport News. She currently serves as the President of Virginia Osteopathic Medical Association. Lynne has previously served on the board of WMU of Virginia and been the WMU director of West Hampton Baptist Church in Hampton for 7 years. She strings her pearls of faith as a missional leader within the health community, a mentor of women within her church and a devoted mother within her family. When things get hard she s learned to strengthen the spiritual chord rather than break the beads!
2 This concludes our continuing series of articles, spotlighting our Sunday School classes. From January through March, we featured most of our classes. The classes shown here are the remaining classes of which we have photographs. Contact our Sunday School Director, Gail Davis, to find a class that meets your needs. Sunday School classes Grades 1 and 2 Sunday School class, taught by Pam Owens (in blue), Rebecca Goff and Bryant Payne 2 to 3 Year-Old Sunday School class, taught by Jenny Lang (left) and Connie Norris These are faces of Shiloh, reflecting their love for Jesus. Our Sunday School Director, Gail Davis, encourages you to bring your child to Sunday School every Sunday so they may learn about Jesus; and, while you re there, go to one of the adult classes. Coed 1 through 3 classes offer many opportunities for you to enjoy spiritual fellowship and embark upon a journey of Christian renewal through Bible study and sharing life experiences. Our theme this year is "Sharing the Light of Jesus." Bible study is so important in our Spiritual growth. Through Bible study in the fellowship of the classroom, we are finding that the more we focus on our Savior, the more we draw closer to each other and to Him. Through interactive study each Sunday, families (no matter their makeup---two-parent homes, singleparent homes, children being nurtured by grandparents, singles, all designs of family life) grow in Biblical knowledge leading to discourse within the family about what it means to be a Christian, what it means in respect to our families, our life choices, and our interaction with the secular world. Your Sunday School invites each and every one reading this newsletter, as well as your friends and other family members, to join us on Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m. as we continue to Share the Light of Jesus. 2 Coed 3 Sunday School class, taught by Jim Jensen (back row, left) Grades 3and 4 Sunday School class, taught by Richard Amick and Meredith Busic
3 Children s Ministry News Rev. Ray Tubbs, Jr. Children s Minister Well, Spring is here (finally). Time to start thinking about Vacation Bible School. The dates for VBS are June 23 rd 27 th from 5:45 8:30 pm. This is also the time to ask yourself What can I do to help with VBS?. The sign -up sheet is by the office and I ask that you prayerfully consider your role in VBS. VBS is the main outreach for a church. We have classes from babies to adults so invite those families to come out for this great time of learning about God and His wonderful Glory. I will be preparing flyers and postcards for anybody that wants to invite friends, neighbors, and family to Vacation Bible School. Music News Barbara Perry Music Minister Spring is in the air and we are finishing up the year with children's choir. The children will sing their final Sundays for this school year on the following schedule: May 5 Children's Handbells will play May 12 The older children's choir will sing with the adults May 19 The little children's choir will sing The Wednesday night rehearsal schedule will continue through May 22nd. You know, these Children's groups really need names. Do you have an idea? If so, send me an , barbaraperry@live.com!! Also, I am working on the Children's Choir/Teenager Choir set up for next fall. Please let me know if you can volunteer to help. The Sounds of Praise is working on weekly anthems and beginning preparation for the annual Memorial Day Celebration Sunday. Now is a great time to get involved, so come out for practice on Wednesdays at 7:15 p.m. Calling All Graduates! If you have a 2013 graduate of high school or college, who is a part of our Shiloh family, please contact Jim Reger (youth@kgshiloh.org) or the church office ( ). Graduate Recognition will be Sunday, June 2, during worship service. Jim Reger, Youth Minister Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you wished you would have known what to say to someone searching for answers? God puts us in these situations so He can reach others. He has put people all around us who need to hear of His love, grace, and mercy. Our friends, our neighbors, and our family need us to tell them about Jesus Christ. He wants to use us for His glory. A simple way to reach out is to start up a conversation in a natural, everyday way with a purpose of getting to the spiritual side. RE- MEMBER First pray, and be humble when you speak, this is key! Reading and studying your Bible, and praying ahead of time, will help you be better prepared. It s OK if you find yourself trying to answer questions but can t. We don t have to answer every question. We only need to be available to tell others of God s Law and their need for His grace. He will handle the rest. Besides, an unanswered question allows us to follow up with them, and continue the conversation. If you get stuck on a question, talk to your parents, or come to me and we will find the answer together so you can share it with others. Calendar of Events May am World Changer Session May 21 May 22 Feed the Needy Last Wednesday Night Study VBS By: Angela Clatterbuck It s hard to believe AWANA is almost over! It has been a great year with an average of 40 children regularly attending, ranging in age from 3-12 years. They have each learned numerous Bible verses and learned and/or reviewed the books of the Bible. Each week we opened with the pledge to the American Flag as well as the AWANA flag, had book time, counsel time and game time. We were blessed to have dedicated adult volunteers there each week to assist, encourage and applaud the hard work of the children. We want to extend a thank you to Shiloh for supporting this wonderful program for our children. On May 5, 2013, we will have our Awards Ceremony and Pine Car Derby to celebrate the end of a wonderful year. 5

DOWN MEMORY LANE More on the Johnson Property In the last two issues of The Shiloh Visitor, we reported the money found on the parsonage property, formerly the old Oscar Johnson property, was settled on January 4, 1908, with each party receiving half the amount found. All was quiet until October 22, Brother S. P. Marshall brought to the attention of the church a supposed claim that the Johnson heirs had on the parsonage property. It seemed that when the church bought that property from Johnson about 25 years ago that, a little after this time, his widow made a claim for her dower in the property. W. A. Rose was employed by the church through the late Bro. Peyton Parker to look after the interest of the church in this suit. It seemed that, at the expiration of 5 years after this suit was filed in court, it was stricken from the docket in the circuit Court of King George, resulting in a clear title of the church for the property in which the parsonage is built. After a general discussion of this matter, it was decided on motion to pay Mr. Rose $15 for his legal services rendered in this suit.
