PASTOR S WORD Dear Friends, Our churchwide emphasis Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity has begun! Last Sunday our topic was Dreaming Big. We examined how our dreams sometimes contrast with God s vision, and how we must seek to realign our lives with God. In the 9:00 service, we welcomed Jaxon James Tolewitzke in Baptism, and remembered what we know in baptism, that God transforms our lives! If you are interested in being baptized or in membership at Cornerstone, let us know, we would love to be a part of your journey! If you were unable to be with us, as always, you can find our services and sermons on our website (cornerstoneumc.net.)

2 Tonight we are beginning our coffees with the pastor neighborhood meetings (see information below.) If you didn t receive your invitation but would like to attend a gathering, let us know! We ve had to update contact information as we go, as some of the information we have may not have reached you. This Sunday we will continue to examine what we began to talk about briefly last week, our being made in the image of God, as we examine Genesis 1:27-31, the creation narrative, and wrestle with the topic Wisdom and Finance. We will look closely at the biblical principles of money management and discover how they apply to our daily lives and to the people we were created to be. We will hear in worship a testimony from a couple in our church about the impact that being intentional in finances has made in their lives, and you ll receive some tools that may help you in your financial planning. WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDIES Our Wednesday Night Meal and Bible Studies resumed on Wednesday, January 16. Our meal of chili or loaded potato soup with desserts will begin at 5:30 p.m. We will have bible studies for all ages beginning at 6:00 p.m. Pastor Sam will be leading an adult study on Walter Bruggemann s Interrupting Silence. Below is a review of the book from CGSLibrary: Silence is a complex matter. It can refer to awe before unutterable holiness, but it can also refer to the coercion where some voices are silenced in the interest of control by the dominant voices. It is the latter silence that Walter Brueggemann explores, urging us to speak up in situations of injustice. Interrupting Silence illustrates that the Bible is filled with stories where marginalized people break repressive silence and speak against it. Examining how maintaining silence allows the powerful to keep control, Brueggemann motivates readers to consider situations in their lives where they need to either interrupt silence or be part of the problem, convincing us that God is active and wanting us to act for justice. Pastor Kathleen will be leading an adult study on Adam Hamilton s Half Truths. Most of us as Christians have things we believe, and tell others, and even count on, that we ve not carefully examined. Some of the things we accept and repeat sound so true, and we ve believed them for so long, that we say them without thinking. They are simple phrases. They sound Christian. They capture some element of truth, but they miss the point in important ways. Join us as we search for the whole truth by comparing some common Christian sayings with the wisdom found in Scripture. 3. We encourage you to consider providing food or donations designated for this ministry at this time. Also, they have begun a glove/hat/scarf collection point at a fence in north Jonesboro for those who need these supplies during the winter months. If you would like to donate these items, you can place them in the grocery cart at the back of the Sanctuary. 5. GROWCON TRAINING

4 6. SUNDAY SCHOOL/SMALL GROUP RESOURCES Is your Small Group or Sunday School Class stumped on what to study? As we have had in the past, the church office has a catalog you can look through and a library with many resources available. Additionally, Pastor Kathleen will be writing a study and prayer guide each week with questions and thoughts based on each week s worship message for you to use in personal bible study, family devotionals, or small groups. They will be available electronically and in paper form on the Missions and Ministry table in the back of the sanctuary.
