Squre Mer's Barn," otherwse known as the Frank Thompson Gymnasum, was the scene of a very gaa and unque affar ast Saturday nght when the students of the Agrcutura Cub of State Coege entertaned ther frends at a Barn-warmng. The profuson of pne trees and baes of straw created a rea country atmosphere. The baes of straw aso made spendd seats here and there over the foor. Entrance to the man foor was partcuary strkng and unque, t was ndeed a very good m. taton of a country ane at nght. The guests were greeted by a country ad who drected them nto the barn wth a dmy ghted antern. The grs were a dressed n the conventona country garb of gngham dresses. GREAT NTEREST SHOWN Professor Carke Presents Matter to Students n Masterfu Way; Many Campus Organzatons Have Been nstrumenta n' Arousng nterest n Ths Latest of Journastc Ventures. At a student body meetng n Puen Ha ast Monday nght the students of State Coege voted n favor of a ter-' ary magazne to be pubshed ths coege year. Professor Cark presented the mat.- ter to the students n a very forcefu and peasng manner. n hs short tak he took an extract from the coege song to show what s gong on and what shoud go on at State Coege. The extract was: State Coege Keep Fghtng Aong." Deveopng hs tak aong ths ne, Professor Cark asserted that State Coege students are not a bunch of rough engneers and farmers; contrarwse, a group of,students comng from the best fames of North Carona and. assembng here to mprove ther sprtua and nteectua taents aong wth the apped arts. The cmt of the magazne w be very sma ffty cents for fve ssues and w he pad for out of the advertsng and subscrptons. There w be a meetng next Monday at noon to decde whether or not the magazne w be started before Chrstmas or after our hodays. Ths acton of the student body prac~ tcay assures the pubcaton for State Coege. as t s extremey unkey that any unfavorabe acton w be taken by the trustee; when the matter s presented to them. Severa of the organzatons on the cam pus have been nstrumenta n arousng the nterest whch has cumnated n ths mportant move by the student body. From tme to tme the possbtes of a campus magazne had been agtated by ndvduas, snce the Word War, durng whch a th pubcatons of State Coege, save t g Aymmeck. were forced to be dscontnued. Later the Pne Burr joned the movement, but t was ony the Brooks Lterature Cub, wth some ndvduas backng, whch fnay brought the matter drecty before the students n an organzed manner. Some executve, sn t he? t s rumored that the Barn- Warmng w be an annua affar. THE wshes to hearty endorse ths proposton. Our dea of the successfu coege student s the feow who gets eected to at east one responsbe poston n every socety on the campus. Some one wanted to know what THE woud do wthout the Journasm casses. We prefer to thnk about a more peasant subject. Who sad our facuty members were not good sports? We admt we were agreeaby surprsed by the showng they made at the soca Saturday nght. Last week we dropped a fant suggeston about the benefts to be derved from havng co eds here. Up unt the present no physca voence has overtaken us. The farmng eement n ths com munty enjoyed a barn warmng at Squre Mer s ast Saturday nght. Many of the prosperous panters were present, and aso many of the neghbors from the Meredth com munty. And now the rado peope cam thatwe can sten n whe aseep and retan the nformaton far better than when awake. Coege students, here s a chance to get an educaton aong wth our other actvtes at schoo. The chef troube wth the squre s party was the absence of the grs from Peace. We do not know why they coud not be present, but they were mssed, and we hope t w be 'possbe for them to attend the next affar of ths knd that s hed here. The Technque, weeky paper of Georga Schoo of Technoogy, s a goodpaper, but- t s evdent that they do not read THE down there. A recent ssue of ther paper stated that ther schoo had theony course n Ceramc Engneerng south of Oho. We recommend a carefu perusa of the papers of the technca coeges of North Carona. A HEALTHY OUTLOOK The terary magazne s assured. The student-body voted amost unanmousy for the new pubcatonmonday nght. Ths acton of the students here has a great sgnfcance. t not ony means that we are now ready for a magazne, but t aso means that a dream s beng reazed, a goa s beng attaned. When Dr. Brooks became presdent he started at once to brng about a greater center of terary actvty here. Ths was no task for a month or a year. t was one that requred vson nto the future. We do not ook upon the desre for a magazne as the cumnaton of ths movement. t s merey a chapter n the story, a natura outgrowth of the new sprt that s ganng a foothod on ths campus. Ths sprt s beng manfested n many other feds. Never before has debatng and other forms of pubc speakng hed such an, mportant pace n the fe of ths coege. The nterest n terature reached the pont ast year where t caed for an organzaton of ts own. At the present there are about seventy-fve students enroed n Journasm casses and amost as many n Pubc Speakng. Each of these courses are eectve, and show rea nterest on the part of the students who eect to take them. The new brary, wth ts factes, shoud be a great hep n fosterng ths terary renassance. The Department of Hstory, whch s beng panned for next year, w contrbute ts part to the cause. The speca room n the brary where facuty and students w meet for nforma dscussons w aso have ts share. We do not wsh to become unduy excted about our progress, but ths awakenng n terary actvtes bears the marks of some rea constructve work on the part of facuty as we as students. t shows the trend of our nsttuton. t does credt to our presdent and those who have backed the students n ther efforts. t. demonstrates the fact that a technca coege does not have to bea tranng schoo. t means that the future of State Coege s beng buded upon sound educatona prncpes. NOTES ON THE FORUM There was a note of the tragc n the tak made by Ne Batte Lews. at the Regous Forum Sunday nght. Tragc because t was so true. Ths young woman has faced the ssues whch confront a thnkng young peope today. She makes some serous charges aganst the church as an nsttuton. Whether these are true or not w be eft for a worther scrbe to say. However, we do know that the group whch she represents s constanty growng arger. Coege boys and grs are thnkng, despte the many attractons offered to hnder them. Many of them are thnkng thoughts that woud shock the mnds of ther eders, f theybut knew. n schoo we are taught to queston thngs. Can we be expected to deveop an nteect whch questons matera thngs, but whch s satsfed wth any knd of sprtua food offered? Often coege students are ooked upon as ether frghtfuy rrcgous or hepeessy uncon cerned. Those who hod ths vew are not acquanted wth the peope they condemn. The troube s that our vewponts are changed, and they fa to recognze the change and see ony the od garments whch have been cast asde, and do not recognze the new and fner ones whch have taken ther pace. Whe we admt that many of the churches are not offerng very much nducement to the young mnds, we are ncned to ook upon the matter more hopefu-1y than Mss Lews does. We agree as to the ament, but we dffer as to theremedy. Of course there are those who can worshp God wthout any ad from the churches, but man s a gregarous anma and does much better when assocated wth hs feows. For every mnd whch can soar to the mountan peaks and there fnd peace and joy, there are many whch need the stmuus whch comes from the assocaton of kndred mnds. t s THE for ths reason that we thnk the young peope shoud not wthdraw from the church, but, rather, take an actve part, and soon ther nfuence w be fet n the shapng of ts destny. f the young peope demand more regon and ess doctrne, and show a wngness to hep share the burdens, we beeve there w sprng up churches whch w meet these requests. The church that nterests the thnkng young peope of today must be one whch stresses the regon of Jesus, and not a bewderng mass of creeds and dogmas. W1 HETERO COLORS M. w. Some tme pror to that date we w be asked to vote ether n favor of or aganst the proposton. Do you know any reason why we shoud enter the court? - A few weeks ago at Duke Unversty a conference of students, back and whte, met to dscuss the Word Court. My observaton was that some of those negro students know more about the subject than the average North Carona State Coege student. Takng for granted that the above s true, there-seems to be a great chaenge to us. tt Most of as assocate appesauce wth pork, snce they are served together; so t s up to you to fnd out why some of the far sex pass out appesauce to the Edtora Staff of the 26 Agromeck. h a u u u n a au Evaporated Bu s uf uq f HEROSM There s no pace today that offers a greater chaenge to the heroc n young men than the coege campus. Many peope thnk that herosm s dspayed ony on the batte-fed, n the athetc contest, or n outstandng deeds of bravery; whereas, the man who stands for the rght every day despte the wrong that s rampant about hm, and w not be swept on wth the current, s no ess heroc. t takes a man to show hs true coors and stand frm and resoute for hs convctons. Numbers of students come to coege every year wth the dea that coege s soey for the deveopment of the nteect, others that the physca s the most mportant, whe apparenty ony a few beeve that the thrd sde of man s nature, the sprtua, has a pace n coege fe. Not a few students drop ther regon at' home when they eave for coege, expectng to take t up agan at the end of four years. Too often they fnd that after four years of negect ths s dffcut to do. ' n a very exceent artce, addressed to students, n the ast ssue of The Baptst Student, the wrter has ths to say: Some students sometmes get the smart termn}! snqulte the thng to be regous n an academc atmosphere; that here you must be cod and crtca and caous, that t sn t showng the proper sprt of nteectua ndependence to be dependent even upon a Hgher Power, Ths atttude represents a shaow and superfca vew. t s a whoy nadequate concepton of both educaton and regoh. Regon s acceptng the ongest and argest vew of thngs, and educaton gves us an ntegent and enghtened nterpretaton of ths vew. Regon needs educaton and educaton needs regon." From the Hornet. :-.
