Contrastng sharpy wth Stevenson's detaed proposas for a "New Amerca", Esenhower pocy has supported a regressve tax cut, made hash of conservaton, both through wdey advertsed "gveaways" and the ncompetence of the nteror Department. The gans made by the Esenhower admnstraton n wefare egsaton have been over the votes of hs feow Repubcans, and these same votes doomed egsaton on housng and educaton. Esenhower has preferred to hedge rather than to openy ask for Southern acceptance of the ntegraton decson, as Stevenson has, because that decson s what he and the rest of the naton thnk rght. He refused to wthdraw support from Senator McCarthy unt such a poston became potcay unproftabe. n Hs Partty Not as obvous as the faure of hs nfuence over hs party's congressmen has been the breakdown of the Esenhower staff system.
