1 YEAR 5 UNIT G LENT A B O U T T H E U N I T This unit invoves the chidren in thinking about the concept of temptation as they study the temptations of Jesus. Chidren wi be given the opportunity to refect on what nurtures and damages human reationships they wi study some important texts from the New Testament about Christian iving and wi earn about the Sacrament of Reconciiation as a Sacrament of Heaing and God s forgiveness. P R I O R L E A R N I N G It woud be hepfu if chidren have: some knowedge of the Sacrament of Reconciiation some experience of ceebrating the Season of Lent. W H E R E T H E U N I T F I T S I N The unit buids upon previous work in Year 3 and Year 4 about the Sacrament of Reconciiation and themes concerned with the Season of Lent. A S S E S S M E N T At the end of this unit: V O C A B U L A R Y Lent, repent, temptation Corinthians, Coossians, Ephesians, Sacraments, heaing, forgiveness, reconciiation, act of contrition, examination of conscience. A.T.1 A.T.2 Most chidren wi know that Lent is a Season of Change for Christians to become more ike Christ. Understand some things that damage human reationships and the consequences of giving in to temptations that are wrong. Recognise that the Sacrament of Reconciiation is the Church s ceebration of God s forgiveness of sin. Less abe chidren wi know that Lent is an important Season in the Church year. Identify some things that are wrong and damage human reationships. Know that the Church ceebrates God s forgiveness of sin in the Sacrament of Reconciiation. More abe chidren wi know reasons which motivate Christians to ive more ike Christ. Understand that Christ is the mode and exampe by which Christians try to ive. They wi have a greater understanding of things that damage reationships and the evi consequences of giving in to temptations. 2 P R O G R A M M E O F S T U D Y T E A C H I N G S T R AT E G I E S Expore with the chidren some of the changes that take pace in the different seasons of the year (e.g. contrast Autumn and Spring) Reca previous earning about Lent and remind the chidren that just as the seasons of the year change, Christians use the Season of Lent as a time to try to grow and change to be more ike Christ. After receiving ashes at an Ash Wednesday iturgy reca the words as the Sign of the Cross is marked on the forehead in ashes. Use thesaurus to investigate aternatives to repent. Use a variety of dictionaries to expore definitions. Write these definitions out on strips of paper and use these to create a purpe Lenten dispay board entited: Lent a time to repent, a time to pray. R4 Hear, read and expore the Gospe accounts of key events in the ife of Jesus: The Temptations. Chidren to read the story of the Temptation of Jesus. Highight the responses that Jesus made to each temptation. How might he have fet during a of this? What does Jesus response to the devi teach us? What does the response of Jesus to the devi te us about his understanding of God the Father? Chidren to imagine that they were Jesus. What questions might come into your mind as you heard each temptation? Draw pictures and write the questions in thought bubbes. Imagine that the temptations were taking pace in the twenty first century. What might the devi use to tempt Jesus? Why? In groups, ask the chidren to brainstorm temptations fet by themseves today. How do you know that the temptation is wrong? What are some of the consequences if you give into a temptation that wi hurt other peope? Use newspaper cuttings to expore occasions when temptations were not resisted How might the response of Jesus in the story of the Temptation hep peope to overcome their own temptations? R3 Hear about and expore the Bibe. Ask the chidren to find some of the New Testament Letters. Expain to the chidren that these were written after the resurrection of Jesus to guide peope who began to beieve in him. Using the Letters, find out the type of guidance that they offer. ask the chidren to work in sma groups and reference the foowing quotations from the Letters: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, Coossians 3: 12-15, Coossians 3: 20-23, Ephesians 4: 1-3. Ask the chidren to think about how these messages coud hep foowers of Jesus today as they try to grow and change to be more ike him. Chidren to expore good and bad times experienced in friendship, famiy and at schoo. What are some of the aspects of these good and bad times? Create ists of ideas and compare the impact that these aspects have upon us and on other peope. Expore with the chidren the next step that is needed after sin and wrong doing. The need to say sorry and ask God Our Father for forgiveness. Use a variety of dictionaries to expore the meaning of the foowing words: Forgiveness, reconciiation and sorrow. Why do we need forgiveness? What does it do for us and for other peope? 34

Know that the ashes used on Ash Wednesday symboise our desire to change to be more ike Christ R4 That the Gospes procaim that Jesus is the fufiment of God s promises. Know the story of the temptation of Jesus. Understand that he was tempted to do things that were wrong. Think, discuss and write about their ideas of Jesus feeings at this time. Be abe to consider what the temptations woud be if it was today. Dramatise the story. Create a Lenten dispay with some of the symbos found in the story (e.g. bread, rocks, etc.) Know that today peope can be tempted to do things that are wrong. Understand some consequences of choosing to do something that is wrong. R3 Of how to find their way around the Bibe. Know some of the teachings of the apostes from the New Testament etters about becoming more ike Christ. Understand that this teaching has some reference to the ives of Christians today. Be abe to think of some ways in which they can appy Christ s teaching to their own ives. Look for other New Testament quotations that might hep Christians think about growing and changing to be more ike Christ. Know some of the things that nourish or damage human reationships. Understand the consequence of some actions and the need for sorrow and forgiveness when we do wrong. Understand that every Christian is caed to change to be more ike Christ and seek God s forgiveness for their sins. Learn by heart the words of the I Confess and use this prayer during Lenten coective worship. continued 35

Revise with the chidren that Cathoics beieve that these are seven powerfu signs through which Jesus Christ continues to work in his Church and word today. Reca with the chidren the three categories for the Sacraments. 1) Sacraments of Initiation or Beonging which are Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. 2) Sacraments of Heaing which are Anointing of the Sick and Reconciiation. 3) Sacraments of Commitment which are Marriage and Hoy Orders. Ask the chidren to think about why the Sacrament of Reconciiation is a Sacrament of Heaing? What damage do sins and wrong choices in our reationships with God and others cause? Revise the Rite of Reconciiation emphasising the confessing of sins, the act of contrition asking for God s forgiveness, the words of absoution given by the priest and the penance that is given as a thanksgiving for God s forgiveness. Remind the chidren that the priest ceebrates the Sacrament of Reconciiation in the person and pace of Christ to bring his forgiveness to those who ask it. Provide the chidren with an opportunity to prepare a penitentia service. Expain to the chidren the meaning of an Examination of Conscience. Provide chidren with an opportunity to experience this form of prayer and recognise that it is an important part of preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciiation. Ensure that the chidren know a form of the Act of Contrition. Revise and hep the chidren deveop their understanding of the words of this prayer. If possibe, provide an opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciiation to be ceebrated individuay with the chidren. 36
