8 EDTORALS Strong Motve Rather than merey renewng ts contract wth Lackmann Food Servces, the Facuty Student Assocaton (FSA) has decded to change the manner n whch t awards the contracts for runnng campus food servces. Accordng to FSA Presdent Rch Bentey, the ast tme Lackmann's contract expred, they smpy renewed t, but ths tme they pan to not ony take bds from other contractors, but consder negotatng wth dfferent contractors for dfferent cafeteras, nstead of awardng one company the whoe set. We appaud ths decson. t s more than obvous that there s somethng wrong wth the food servce on ths campus. Large numbers of students prefer to do ther own cookng, n spte of the tme t takes, and the everpresent cockroaches. Whe arge cafeteras are not known for servng sumptuous food, they shoud be abe to appea to more of the students. Gvng more than one company the rght to run busnesses on the campus can ony make servce better. t w make for a certan amount of competton, for exampe. f one company s wng to try harder than the others, they w get more of the busness. Furthermore, FSA w be abe to see whch companes do best, and award them more contracts the next tme around. Wth ths n mnd, a of the contractors w have a strong motve for keepng servce at ts best. Stony Brook was on a "tradtona" caendar n whch the fa term went a coupe of weeks past ('hrstmas before examnatons. P'roaby as a resut of student unhappness we shfted to a caendar whch ended before Chrstmas but had 14 weeks of casses n the fa and 1n n the sprng. n the md0's the argunent was made that unequa semesters. whether or not academcay sund. were key to be outawed by the State Educaton Department. C(onsequenty. t was agreed that we shoud return to equa ength 15week semesters. and wve started by gongr back to a post(chr.stmas fa semester. Student reacton aganst ths wass so strong that twev recoed and went over to an August start. Student and facutty reacton aga;nst ths was so strong that we recoed aned went toer to'a 1:'%vwk s ester wth onger c(a>s sessons. Student reacton and facuty sym pathy wth that reacton have been so strog that we are abot to reco( agan. There s no queston that f we go back to the Au19ust start there w\ he a further reacton whch coud we be strong enough to force another changt. w%,oud( ke tt propose an approach whch woud soften that reacton and eaxe the ossbtv that we coud have a stahe caendar whch wtoud ony be c hanged agan after genera (1S( son about how the caendar shoud ft n wth other aspects of the a, ademnc progran at the Unversty, rather than as a resut, of unhappness or ndgnaton n one quarter or another. The suggeston s tup start the fa term on September 1 and have the ast day of examnatons December 2.*. Snce ths woud op two days off the pro)p)o)sed earstart caendar, suggest that Labor Day shoud be made a reguar cass ol~nday. f the eary caendar aready was short one F'rday. t seems to me ogca that t coud a1s ose one day n the Tuesday/Thursday pattern. That woud mean that the tota contact tme n a threecredt Tuesdav/Thursdwa cass woud be 25 mnutes ess than for a Monday/Wednesday/Frday cass. nstead of 50 mnutes more. Both these cass da\ > coud be added on to the sprng semester. Ths amount of nequaty fnd we wthn acceptabe range. and of course both semesters woud exeued the State nunnunm requrement. Snce the most radca part of ths proposa for Stony Broo)k xtwoud be ca.s.ets on Labor Day. some comments are n order. One of the strongest arguments aganst a fa semester gong past Chrstmas was the dsrupton n everyone's trend of thought comng from the hodays. t s evdent that a threeday weekend comng afte the frst week of casses woud a!s) be qute dsruptve. Furthermrme. nmpotant as a of s shoud consder work, we can hardy say t s motre mp)rtant than 1Nwace. A campus whch does not observe Veteran's Dav has no strong reasqon to observe abor Dav. The September start woud st eave some peope ncudng me) grumbnga htot nterference wth summer actvtes. hut the acutenessof such dssatsfact tn wmud nx.. much ess than wth an August start. A further reevant pont was mentoned at the meetng. Whe t s true that our contract does not requ re casses to.start n September. we may be qute sure that the earv start woud not rsu t n an earer arrva of paychecks. Therefore. to other reasonns for srum bng wou141 bt adde1d the fact that any summer saary woud have had to stopear er w he academc year saary wvoud tx startng no soner. Because of the way that hodays. as we xs the number of Saturdayst and Sundays..n the perod Sept. tao Dec 2. fuctuate from year to year. we woud neturd somre ngenuty and fexbty to preserve such a caendar for future vears. Ho()wever. dscuszson on those adjustments may he deferred unt we have the currcuum revew under wav. n any case. as suggested above. ths seems ke a prop)osa whch woud fesu h ff nty vabe for a concerned that we coud get out of our trad tona patvtrn of react on and oscaton and focus more of our attenton on earnng.
