4 DISCIPLESHIP WHAT IS THE DISCIPLESHIP OUTREACH MINISTRY? We are one of four ministry areas (the others are Preparation, Invitation and Administration) formed to carry out our Atonement mission. Discipleship Outreach is God's work locally and beyond. Our ministries include the following: Disbursement of the church benevolence budget to local agencies including: Brighton Food Depot, FoodLink, Brighton Churches Habitat Coalition, St Joseph's Neighborhood Center, Lutheran Campus Ministry, Genesee Area Campus Ministry, Camp Joy, the Rochester Indigent Supplemental Burial Fund, Genesee Fingerlakes Conference, LCLC Camp, and the Bishop's Golf Tournament Fundraising to make additional donations to charities including: our annual May Rummage Sale, Hot Dogs for Hunger, Easter candy, and Thanksgiving pie sales for local Habitat builds Organizing multiple collection projects including: Baby Bundles for Bethany House, the Advent Collections to benefit various agencies, the Angel Tree at Christmas for a Habitat family, the Lenten Appeal for World Hunger, food for the Brighton Food Depot year round, personal hygiene items for St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center, bottles and cans for the Lazarus Fund, and poptops for Ronald McDonald House Growing vegetables for a local food cupboard Providing meals twice a year for the RIT students at their Lutheran Campus Ministries worship service and meal ministry. NEW TO DISCIPLESHIP: TAKE THE DISCIPLESHIP VOLUNTEER CHALLENGE! We have all been blessed by God with certain gifts and talents and opportunities to use them! And we are called to give back a portion of these blessings in thanksgiving for what we have received. That may mean sharing our gifts and talents within our congregation, around our church building, or even volunteering out in the community. A generous donor has established a $4,000 Volunteer Challenge Fund to encourage all of us adults and youth -- to help make a difference in our community. Here s how it works: Volunteer for a local non-profit agency and complete 10 hours of volunteer service. Complete the Volunteer Challenge application form and submit it to the Discipleship mailbox in the church office. The Discipleship team will review the application. If approved, the agency where you volunteer will receive a gift of $200 from the Volunteer Challenge Fund. The Volunteer Challenge may apply to current volunteer activities or new ones. One gift may be made on behalf of a volunteer in a given year until all of the Challenge Fund has been used. For more information, contact the church office or Karen Goodyear, from the Discipleship team. Providing teams: to help serve meals at the Asbury Dining and Caring Center five Sundays each year, and to assist people at St. John's Home Sunday Services twice a year Communicating with our twin congregation in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe BRIGHTON FOOD DEPOT For the month of September, the suggested items to donate are: canned tuna and canned entrées, such as ravioli, beefaroni, and chili. Thank you for your generosity in giving. Your donations are appreciated! 4
