1 OUR REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER July/August 2016 Pastor s Letter July/August 2016 Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ, and friends and don t forget what a friend we have in Jesus and let us be guided by His Spirit! If we live by the Spirit, Let us also be guided by the Spirit. Galatians 5:25 So proclaims St. Paul to us on the Sixth Sunday of Pentecost in our Epistle lesson. If we live by the Spirit, Let us also be guided by the Spirit! That is the Spirit of Jesus. During the summer months of Pentecost, we sit at the feet of Jesus as he teaches us what it means to be disciples and followers That you and I are on a mission for God to proclaim to live in the Kingdom of God. It is not of this world as Jesus once said, it is a kingdom were God s love rules. The Spirit is love, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. So, let us put our faith into practice and follow Jesus. During the summer months remember God! Take no vacation. His work goes on! Church is open Sunday and other days! We have air conditioning! So come, let us continue to worship the Lord. Be faithful stewards and please keep up your support of the Lord s work and mission with your time, talents and possessions. Take time to re-create and vacation. Visit other churches and bring us back a service folder. We like to see how other churches do things. Take time to be with your family God Bless you all! Teachers and leaders for teaching the word of our Lord;...to ALL our for their beautiful work;...the Wednesday "REC" who perform so very many repairs and additions to our buildings during the year;...the Altar Guild for making the Altar so beautiful each week....and to all who helped in a silent way during the year and no one knows who you are! 1

2 REMEMBER YOUR CHURCH WHILE YOU ARE ON VACATION!! Vacation holidays are great!! We all need to get away to relax, rest, and renew our energies and creativity. Please enjoy your vacation and do all you can to make it safe and refreshing. Also, remember that the work of the church does not stop because we go on vacation. Your prayers and offerings make our ministry possible. Before you go, please bring your pledge up to date. And... then enjoy your time away with the knowledge that the work of the Lord through our congregation continues undiminished. You'll be glad you did!!! 3 SUMMER RETREAT Please join us for our Family Summer Retreat at Koinonia July 15 17, Have fun in the sun rafting and enjoying fellowship. Sign Up! Join us on th Sunday, July 10 at 9:30 AM in our Memorial Garden for worship. Afterwards, we will gather together for brunch. Congratulations to all our 2016 Graduates! 4 DAY CARE NEWS Time sure does fly. As I get older I enjoy the summer weather so much more. Summer is such an enjoyable time with children. I have great memories of my own childhood summers. I always loved school, but my family made the summer the best. My sister and I had a sandbox, swing set, and little pool that mom would fill with hot water, bucket by bucket, so we wouldn't freeze (until my dad installed an adapter on the sink for the hose!) Those days were filled with everyone playing in our yard, so much that new neighbors thought our house was the neighborhood playground! My dad put up an old parachute for us to play in like a tent, my mom kept us entertained with art supplies, and we would sit outside to color at our little picnic table while eating a picnic lunch. My grandma would get her bike and we would bike ride around the neighborhood. I want to make memories like these with the children here. Have a story time outside, eat a picnic lunch, play in the water, and color at a picnic table. With all the technology, the simple pleasures get lost, but I want to bring them back! them a happy future, full of teachers who appreciate them individually for their talents and skills, and love them like we do! Meanwhile, the children remaining will switch over to a summer mode. Many days of water play, picnics, walking field trips, and special days will fill our summer. The learning still continues, as the outdoors becomes our classroom to explore and discover. Have a fun, relaxing, and safe summer! Fondly, Melissa Bires-McGee The children in the Toddler and Pre-K rooms have been busy practicing their songs and preparing for our graduation program. Our theme this year is Aloha! The children have created all of the decorations and are ready to perform. From the practices to the real show, they put their whole heart into it! They do not suffer from stage fright, as they take on the task with such enthusiasm. I love to watch them and always shed a few tears when we have to say goodbye to the ones leaving for kindergarten. Being with them everyday makes them feel like family. We have prepared them well for their journey. I wish

6 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2016 The dedicated day of service is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. a church freed in Christ to service and love our neighbor! We are joining other churches across the country to put our faith into action. We are dedicating this weekend is September to serve our Community by having a Food Collection at local supermarkets for those in need. Donations will be given to Lutheran Community and Family Services, Uniondale. Please save that date and sign up on the board in the narthex to help. 6
