JANUARY INTERIM FORUMS BEGIN JANUARY 9TH Join us on consecutive Wednesdays in January, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., for a series of forums on important and interesting topics for the interim time. Pastor Kearney will lead these conversations and guarantees that they will be engaging and informative. They will also help members prepare for the next era in Good Shepherd s journey. Here are the forums topics: January 9: Celebrating Our History We will tell stories from Good Shepherd s past, filling up a newsprint timeline. We can learn from those stories. They tell us who we are. January 16: How Church Size Affects How We Do Ministry Some have heard about pastoral and program churches. We will revisit that framework as a way to talk about the gifts that different-sized congregations bring to ministry. January 23: Singing Our Faith We will share our favorite hymns and why they are important to us. These hymns says a lot about our understanding of God and the world. We ll also sing some of those hymns, with our organist Adelaide Kersh accompanying. January 30: Imagining Our Future We will imagine what our community and congregation looks like ten years from now and reflect on what we need to do help to help Good Shepherd.

3 The Village of the Good Shepherd Creche There are about 105 families living in the village. They all live in separate small huts. Each family includes parents, children and grandparents about five to six people. Out of 105 families, 70 families are employed in field work. The other 35 families do road and ditch cleaning. The parents are gone all day, leaving the children with the grandparents if possible. It is common to eat only two meals a day (morning and night). Although the food (mostly rice) is not the most nutritious, they all have something to fill their stomachs. A second need is clothing. We have found there are a number of young widows. As the parents are not in a position to afford the dowry, they find older men willing to marry the young girls without a dowry. Having our Good Shepherd Creche is good news for this village. The children are receiving good food, good care, good education, good discipline and are getting to know Jesus. You may know that India has developed in many ways. However, there are still countless villages which do not have basic facilities or privileges. There is also starvation in the villages, which is not being seen, surveyed, or even acknowledged. In this Christmas season, we have contributed something to the poorer (a relative term) families in the village such as rice, old clothes and a set of plates along with a sweet pack, whether or not they have children in our Creche. This witness to our faith makes Christmas a special and happy time for them. The villagers are very happy and thankful to you for your selfless service.

4 Here is information about Sanjay, one of the students at the Good Shepherd Creche, whose brother is pictured below. Sanjay always comes to the crèche with his friends. Sanjay s older brother is our GSC graduate. He always walks behind his brother Sanjay to make sure he reaches the crèche safely. Sanjay is usually a very happy child. He likes his crèche uniform because that is the best set of clothes he has. He writes and draws quickly. Fish is his favorite food. At lunch time he takes second and third helpings. Even if he is late, the teachers keep his share, as he will surely ask for it. ************************************************************************ ************************************************************************ OUR CONGREGATION S AUTHORS Arthur and Elaine Raynolds have published two new books, which are travel journals. The books will be for sale at the Ingles table during the Coffee Hour in the Fellowship Hall after the 10:00 a.m. worship service.

5 COUNCIL RETREAT JANUARY 12TH The congregation council will gather for a done-day retreat at Deerpark Clubhouse on Saturday, January 12th. They will engage in some fun team-building exercises, worship and some goal-setting for Please keep them in your prayers. VOLUNTEER MINISTRY NEWS Happy New Year! We begin 2013 with several volunteer opportunities. Altar Care is in need of additional volunteers. If you are interested in serving on the Altar Care Team, contact Sheila Swancara or Ginny Nardone. We also have the position of Fellowship Coordinator available. This position can be held by one person or a team of two people. The coordinator identifies and helps to organize one or two social activities per year, such as the church picnic, for the LCGS congregation. Contact Ginny Nardone if you are interested in serving. Attention committee chairs and ministry managers. When there are changes to the membership of your work group, please be sure to let volunteer ministry know immediately. This information is used by staff and other organizations in the church and is critical to keeping the volunteer database accurate and up to date. Thank you. Kathy Knecht, a volunteer trainer for the NC Synod, will be here to guide the Team in the selection and interviewing process.
