1 Atonement Tidings November 2018 REMEMBERING THE SAINTS ALL SAINTS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 4 Listen to the sound of bells as our Bell Banner is processed into worship in remembrance of the life and witness of the saints who now share in everlasting glory with Christ. We will end our worship service by recessing to the Atonement Memorial Garden, to remember those members of our church family and others who now rest from their labors in the promise of eternal life. COMING UP CONGREGATIONAL MEETING SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2 at 10:45 AM Topic: 2019 Budget 2 QUESTIONS 1. What is this? 2. Where is this? *Check out next month s Tidings for the answer*
2 INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP POTLUCK DINNER Sunday, November 4, 4:00 to 6:30 pm Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall Welcome our new neighbors from faraway lands such as Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria, Burma/Myanmar and Nepal, and share food and fellowship at this abundant potluck dinner. Special guests will be the Nepali Dancers who will perform during dessert. Catholic Family Center, the local agency that sponsors legal refugees here in the Rochester area, and 12 Corners and South Presbyterian churches join us in this collaborative outreach ministry. Space is limited for each congregation (20 adults PLUS their young children.small children are not included in the count) and reservations are required. Please bring a dish to pass that will serve at least 8 to 10 people. Because many of our guests are Muslim, dishes with any kind of pork should be avoided. Electric outlets for crockpots are limited, so try to bring your dish as warm as possible, or able to wait in one of the warming ovens. If you would like to try your hand at preparing a Halal dish, which follows Muslim dietary guidelines, take a look at this website: myhalalkitchen.com. You ll find a section called What is Halal Cooking? and a link to What is Halal Food? By cooking a vegetarian dish (or purchasing Halal certified meat) and making a few simple substitutions such as vegetable broth in place of chicken or beef broth, you can cook Halal, too! Additional spaces are available for volunteers. Volunteers are needed for setup, cleanup, hospitality and greeting, kitchen and buffet table management. Watch for details and signup sheets on the bulletin boards in the Narthex and by the office entrance, as well as in the Sunday bulletin. Join us at the table, share a meal, be a welcoming and healing presence for people who have made a long and arduous journey to their new home.come and give thanks! For more information, contact Avis Hooper, Pastor Gail, Margy Peet, or Karen Goodyear. 2
3 CHURCH NEWS TAKE THE DISCIPLESHIP VOLUNTEER CHALLENGE! We have all been blessed by God with certain gifts and talents and opportunities to use them! And we are called to give back a portion of these blessings in thanksgiving for what we have received. That may mean sharing our gifts and talents within our congregation, around our church building, or even volunteering out in the community. Nov..4 Nov. 11 ADULT FORUM Sundays at 10:45 AM From Migrant to Ministry The Rev. Liorolie Buffum Welcome Brunch A generous donor has established a $4,000 Volunteer Challenge Fund to encourage all of us adults and youth -- to help make a difference in our community. Here s how it works: Volunteer for a local non-profit agency and complete 10 hours of volunteer service. Complete the Volunteer Challenge application form and submit it to the Discipleship mailbox in the church office. The Discipleship team will review the application. If approved, the agency where you volunteer will receive a gift of $200 from the Volunteer Challenge Fund. The Volunteer Challenge may apply to current volunteer activities or new ones. One gift may be made on behalf of a volunteer in a given year until all of the Challenge Fund has been used. For more information, contact the church office or Karen Goodyear, from the Discipleship team. 6 PASTOR S PAGE Fall Stewardship: We Glorify God Through Our Giving In his writings, Saint Paul gave us a lot to ponder, including this: Whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. (1 Cor. 10:31) Everyday we glorify God by placing him at the very heart and center of our lives - which includes the use of our financial resources. We glorify God through our giving: the giving of who we are, what we do, what we have. LCLC AUCTION UPDATE The Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Center Fundraiser Auction was a big success! Generous donations of quilts, artwork, gift baskets and pies resulted in over $9000 raised for the ongoing programs and ministries of LCLC. Many thanks to those from Atonement who supported this worthy endeavor with contributions of quilted wall hangings, pillows, gift basket items, pies and candy. The truth is, most of us have a conflicted relationship with money. On one hand, we claim that it can t buy us love, and won t buy us happiness. But all too often, we measure our worth and security by it. Again, our relationship with money is complicated. Yet the practice of giving our money away - to God, God s work and God s people - is a spiritual discipline that s not complicated at all. Giving money is a way for us to learn to live by faith. Giving money is a way to participate in God s generosity and abundance. Giving money away opens a path for us to be connected to a wide circle of God s beloved people. It s part of our life together. Our Fall Stewardship Program is underway, and I ask each of you to prayerfully and thoughtfully consider how you give and what you give. I also ask that you make a pledge of financial support for God s work at Atonement and return your pledge card by November 4. Making a pledge gives you the opportunity to glorify God by managing your life in response to the many ways God has blessed your life. It also helps our congregation plan its programs for mission and ministry in Money can be complicated, but giving doesn t have to be. Thank you for glorifying God through your giving. In Peace, Pastor Gail 6
7 FELLOWSHIP ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION LUNCH & LAUGHTER Wednesday, November 14th at Noon in Founders Hall Let each day be Thanksgiving, for the blessings from above, for guidance and protection, and God s eternal love. We ll provide beverages, hot and cold. There will be a signup sheet on the narthex bulletin board, but if you forget to sign up, come anyway. There is always room for YOU at our table. Set-up or clean-up help is always appreciated. If you need transportation, call the office at and we will help secure you a ride.
