Yes, we've had a few storms, but Mother Nature has been taking it easy on us compared to other years. It's mid-february and many of the lakes aren't even frozen solidly enough to be considered safe. KnightlyNews@kofc4442.org I want to thank all of you who were concerned and/or prayed for me during my recent cardiac catheterization. I've been through this twice before, but this time they shipped me to Beth Israel in Boston with a problem too big for Lawrence General. Surprisingly, Beth Israel found no problem at all. I don't know if it was the result of better diagnostic equipment in Boston or if Almighty God fixed me on the way down. I figure either way our prayers were answered. Issue February 18, 2019 Our Council continues to provide help to so many people and organizations in need. You can be proud of the work we do and the results we are producing. Treasurer's and Financial Secretary's Reports: Bob Fournier and Charlie Walsh Bob's report tonight was brief and to the point. He reviewed the current checkbook and balances in our accounts. The Schwab account has recovered some in January. Charlie reported on 25 checks written in January; our membership remains at 246. Both reports were approved by the members. Committee Reports GK Ron conducting in DGK Rico's absence: Membership/Admissions - Norm Comeau Currently we have 246 members no change in membership; Norm plans to incorporate Supreme's web page filing app to attempt to increase the membership with a simpler recruiting tool. GK Ron reminded everyone that while Norm is in charge of getting candidates through the degree process, it is our individual responsibility to make those initial contacts and get the candidate's name and info / Form 100 to Norm. Culture of Life - Dennis Groulx and Ron Bourque 40 days for Life program goes from March 6 to April 14. Other drives at our hall are on May 16, July 25, Sept 19, and Nov 14. Corporate News- Mike Petrilli Nothing unusual to report tonight. We are doing our normal housekeeping chores. Old Business The following notices of motion were individually removed from the table, discussed, and approved unanimously. Notice of Motion -- $1,000 for Fr. Brian at St Matthew's Dominican Republic Mission trip. This trip it to install piping to get fresh water to the school from a remote well, because the local well has gone dry. Notice of Motion -- $1,000 for Fr. Flanagan s Boys Town. New Business Trustee requests: The East Africa Charitable Projects Fund (EACPF) was presented with $ approved, to be donated to their projects that support Pro-Life work, requested by Ron Bourque. A military Friends Foundation - RUCK SAC Go RUCK was presented with $ approved to go toward the fund, requested by Mike Petrilli. New Business continued from the floor - [None tonight] District Deputy Report Bill Richards Activity March and April are designated by Supreme as recruitment periods. I would challenge everyone in the council to make an effort to discuss membership with at least one or two members of the parish over the next two months. My challenge to the council is to welcome two or three new members into the council before the state convention at the end of April. The Granite State awards dinner is coming up on March 9 th Council 6902 in Pelham are now preparing to begin their baked fish dinners on Friday evenings of Lent. They plan to begin on Friday evening, March 8 th from 5:00 pm. Cost is reasonable, between $10 and $12 I believe. I will supply an updated cost after their next council meeting during the first week in March. Council 7572 of Windham is scheduling an Irish Night of Corned Beef and Cabbage on Saturday evening, March 16, 2019 beginning at 6:00 pm. I will have a cost figure within the next few weeks, if any of you are interested in attending. This is one of their biggest income dinners of the year. The Patriotic Degree (4th) is scheduling an exemplification on Saturday, June 15, 2019, and it is to be held at St. Joseph Cathedral in Manchester, NH. This is to be a special provincial-wide exemplification, where all the New England states will gather for one large degree, with the Bishop Labasci celebrating. I am encouraging all the councils in our district to make a special effort to encourage any of our members who have considered advancing to the 4th degree to make the degree now. 4

5 Service Program Reports The State Program Director is asking that councils only submit three or four well documented reports via the online report program; each should be well documented and contain an array of photographs to assist in evaluating the magnitude of the program, which is to be considered for any state award. The remaining programs performed during the fraternal year are reportable to Supreme on the annual SP7 form in June. Council officers can use the new individual program report forms being supplied on-line from Supreme. 6 GOOD OF THE ORDER Please keep Rick Veilleux and his family in your prayers. Rick was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer. He was operated upon Tuesday, Feb 12. Chanel Simard reported on the Bamford family. Son Chris had a recent back operation and Wil continues along with his dementia. Wife Gertrude fell and hurt her hip. So mobility is a real problem at Alta Avenue. Keep the family in your prayers. Gene Bryant reported on a potential request to use the hall for a fund raiser for Isaiah 58, the home / shelter building program in Salem. We have supported this fund in the past with substantial donations. However, the fund raiser as proposed would include giving away wine and beer to patrons and be a casino night with prizes. The members expressed serious concern with the council's liability for both the alcohol and gambling. We voted to reject the request for the hall; no member present wanted to be the sponsoring Knight in charge. Mike Petrilli reported that a wheel chair ramp has been installed for Roland Theberge at his house. Mike reminded the members that it was Rollie who build the very first wheel chair ramp that the council provided for a needy person. Mike conveyed Rollie's sincere thanks to the council for the use of the ramp. Dennis, our calendar phenom, told the meeting that Dave Thomspon's birthday was in two days. Dave was serenaded by the lusty voices of the council. WANTED: LOST but FOUND: We found member Richard E. Tiner! Thank you for the response to last month's newsletter. (Richard is now in assisted living in Londonderry.) If you change your address, phone number, or , please contact Charlie Walsh, , or to Moderator of this website. We don't want you to miss your copy of the newsletter! February Knight of the Month: Julian Roy Julian has been a quiet helper at many council events since joining us this past year. Ron saw him and Al Cormier busy at MQP building the new office space. Attendance Drawing - The $50 prize in February was won by a repeat winner, Dr. Stan Gorgol. Closing Prayer: led by GK Ron. Meeting adjourned at 8:56 PM. 6

Grand Knight Chancellor Admissions Trustee (3 yr) District Deputy Corporation Ron Bourque Tom Campbell Norm Comeau Dave Thompson Bill Richards Mike Petrilli Deputy GK Financial Sec. Treasurer Insurance State Deputy Hall Rental Rico Casaletto Charlie Walsh Bob Fournier Solomon D. Huss Glen P. Camley George Masciarelli Lecturer s Reflections Ron Bourque In a humorous telling of his recent cardiac catheterization, Ron reflected on hospitals, ambulances rides, stress tests, and our morality. Citing Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs, which starts with the basic need of I want to live! and ends with the altruistic Self-actualization I want to give back, Ron reflected that when he was on the stress test table, having difficulty breathing and fearing he was having a fatal heart attack (Yeah, that could be stressful! -ed) he could only think about struggling to breathe and didn't have time to think about saying a good act of contrition, as the nuns taught him to do in times of danger. His advice: stay in a state of grace... you never know when you might be called home and you might not have time to say that last Act of Contrition. In Past Months... in Future Months... Respect Life Mass On a sleeting and snowy Sunday, January 20, 2019, at the 9:30AM Mass at Mary, Queen of Peace, about twenty brave souls attended Mass. For the Knights, we had in tux and baldric Dave Thompson and Don and Linda Simmons. Also attending were GK Ron Bourque, Peter and Kristen Klecan, Chanel Simard in his snow blowing outfit, and Julian Roy and his wife and Steve and Kay Baretto. Father Vincent thanked the few souls attending profusely for "braving the weather." No pictures are available. The lens caps were frozen in place. 7

8 Baby Basket Care Donations Dave Thompson reporting From January 13 thru the 20th, we held a Baby Basket Drive at Saints Mary and Joseph Parish. Empty baskets were placed in the entrances of both St. Joseph Church and Mary, Queen of Peace Church. We were at the Council hall on Saturday the 19th to gather all the items. We were able to collect 22 boxes filled with clothes of different baby sizes, wipes, diapers, powder, lotions, etc. Two laundry baskets were filled with socks and hats, baby bottles, powder, oils, lotions, and many other baby items. Three members brought all the items to Allenstown, NH for the annual Birthright dinner on Sunday, January 20. From there, our community's donations were combined with other councils, all to be distributed to the fifteen or so pregnancy care centers throughout New Hampshire. Thank you to all who donated to this effort to care for the babies of these families in need. Fraternal Visit George Masciarelli and Chanel Simard called upon Ralph Skip Lord while he was at his weekly visit to Silverthorne, the adult day care facility in Salem. (Skip is suffering memory issues.) The guys brought him fraternal greetings from the council, a recognition plaque for Skip's contributions in the past, and a certificate listing some of the many projects Skip did for the council. To list a few, Skip built the podium the GK uses at our meetings, built the butcher block preparation table in the kitchen, rebuilt the front entry stairs of the hall, made the coffee station table near the hall entrance, and built the regalia display case in the upper bar area of the hall. The photo was taken by a staff member at Silverthorne; the staff and Skip's wife Audrey were very appreciative of the visit. Skip has 47 years of service with the Knights. Knights News Brief - Happenings in our State Click here to access the State Council's News Brief Ash Wednesday is March 6. Fr. John Michalowski passed along some thoughts for Lent and Easter. Folding the Hands. Why do we fold our hands when we pray? Jews and Eastern Christians pray with their hands open and raised. Early mosaics and icons show Mary, the Mother of God, praying in that position, the orans or praying position. The practice of folding one s hands in prayer is related to medieval times when a vassal would fold his hands and the overlord, perhaps a king or a duke or earl, would place his hands over those of the vassal, and the vassal would swear allegiance to his lord, and the lord would swear to protect the vassal from robbers and during war. When we fold our hands in prayer, we are acknowledging our dependence on God and promising to be faithful to the Lord, our God. God, in turn, acknowledges that we need his protection and care, and the Lord will lead us. 8
