Now that all of our Easter obligations have ended doesn t mean we forget the reason for the 40 days. JESUS IS ALIVE. Please send articles to the editor: KnightlyNews@kofc4442.org Issue April 16, 2018 Bishop Peterson Council #4442 Bishop Peterson Assembly #0641 Insurance Agent: Matthew DiCalogero Field Agent 8 Stiles Road, Salem, NH Cell: ; Office: Matthew.DiCalogero@kofc.org Highlights inside this issue: Meeting Review p2-6 Old and New Bu$ine$$ - p4 Notices of Motion p4-5 Election of Officers p6 Sir Knight Wilfred Boutin p8 Support our advertisers - p9 Our Council was honored to be the recipient of the Pillar Award from the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce acknowledging a non-profit entity. This was only made possible by our donations to various charitable organizations, events we support and our devotion to those I need. This by no means is an easy task, but each and every one deserves a huge thank you for no man is an island and this recognition cannot be attained without the involvement of all of our members. (P.S. Wonder how Paul is going to hang that award!!!!!!) Don t forget the State Convention is scheduled at the end of April. If anyone wishes to attend, even for the Saturday evening banquet, please let me know. There is going to be a collection at the convention for the Food Pantry at the State Chaplain s (Fr. Aggie Jean s) church, Parish of the Assumption. If you want to make a donation let me know. I will make sure the donations get delivered. As we are being honored by the Parish for our volunteer work at the appreciation dinner on April 25, but please remember we have been requested to help with the set up of the school auditorium. Many hands make light work. Start time on the 24th, the day before, is at 10:00 AM. As always, I leave you with Safe Travels, Good Health and God Bless. VIVAT JESUS David C. Thompson, Jr., GK

(Pete Klecan) College Scholarship Awards Applications Due July 1 (see article) Joe Stafford Family Day Picnic Sunday, July 29, 1:00PM hall (Joe Stafford) Chaplain's Time: Fr Tom spoke of his own youthful experience when he started driving and how he survived daring (i.e. stupid ) events with the help of God. God wants to save us from our stupidity And when we sin, are we not being stupid? We cannot claim where God is, or to claim where or with who God is NOT. Let the Holy Spirit guide us. The Pope delivered an exhortation titled Rejoice and Be Glad (GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE ) When somebody has an answer for every question, it is a sign that they are not on the right road. They may well be false prophets, who use religion for their own purposes, to promote their own psychological or intellectual theories. God infinitely transcends us; he is full of surprises. We are not the ones to determine when and how we will encounter him; the exact times and places of that encounter are not up to us. Someone who wants everything to be clear and sure presumes to control God s transcendence. Nor can we claim to say where God is not, because God is mysteriously present in the life of every person, in a way that he himself chooses, and we cannot exclude this by our presumed certainties. Even when someone s life appears completely wrecked, even when we see it devastated by vices or addictions, God is present there. If we let ourselves be guided by the Spirit rather than our own preconceptions, we can and must try to find the Lord in every human life. GK Opening Remarks: We received the Pillar Award from the Chamber of Commerce for the Nonprofit category. A job well done. 3 Treasurer's and Financial Secretary's Reports: Charlie Walsh Charlie presented both reports tonight. 15 checks written last month and that the headcount is down to 241. Reports accepted as read. Committee Reports Mike Banks conducting: Culture for Life No report tonight. Veterans Activities Rico Casaletto White Clover Drive-May 11th & 12th. The dedication for the Council Bench will be on Sunday May 27th at 2:00PM in Boscawen Veterans Cemetery. The date was changed for the cook-out at the Tilton Veterans Home to June 2nd. Members will meet at 9:45 at the Council Hall. The date for the Veterans Breakfast at the Woodbury School is Nov 2nd at 7:45. Bingo Ron Bourque: The multiple snow cancellations continued this past month, so we are behind last year's total at this point, but Bingo is doing well. The Eagle Tribune had an article about a child of one of the bingo folks who is fighting leukemia. We have donated to that person as a show of support. Thanks to Paul Simard, Lou Stella, and the bingo crew, and of course, Thanks be to Almighty God for granting us these funds to use for charity. Texas Hold-em Larry Belair: We have a string of 7 nights coming up in May. Larry guesses that based on what he has seen with other charities and the action so far at this new start-up location ( Chasers Poker Room on Geremonty Dr. at the former China Blossom ) we may surpass our budget for 2018 by maybe 25%. Blood Drive Butch Kealey We collected 51 pints in March. The next Blood Drive is Thursday May 17. Later Blood Drives are July 12, Sep 13, and Nov 15. Butch Kealey is looking for volunteers. A volunteer doesn't have to work all the hours of the drive (1PM 7PM). If you can help for just a few hours, that would be appreciated. Just show up! Tootsie Rolls Drive Pete Klecan The Tootsie Roll Drive is Wednesday June 6th at the land fill and June 8,9, &10 at designated locations in town. The charts are ready. Sign up for your favorite location. This can be a simple commitment of just 2 hours of your time. More info in the months to come. The Relay event in Salem is on June 23 3

4 Family Day Picnic and Scholarship Drawing: - Joe Stafford Mark your calendars for July 29th, 2018, as our date for the annual Family Day Picnic and Scholarship Drawing. The picnic will take place at our meeting hall at 1:00 PM, where there will be food, beverages, entertainment and lots of fun! Bring your whole family and friends and enjoy a wonderful day together with us. Also on the day of the picnic, we will have the drawing for the college scholarship awards. (The family picnic is just that, a FAMILY PICNIC, open to all members and the families and friends of our council! The scholarship drawing is just one event of the picnic, held at that time for convenience - ed) The deadline for candidates to get their scholarship application to the Scholarship Committee Chairman (Joseph Stafford) will be July 1st, Applications are available at the Council Hall and on the Council's website. << Click THERE! This year, there will be twenty $1,000 scholarships awarded. Please send your applications in as early as possible. Any questions? contact Chairman Joe Stafford at New Member Transfer Dave Thompson / Charlie Walsh A transfer request was approved into our council. We welcome Jean Lavoie, father of member Paul Lavoie. Welcome!! Old Business Prior Notice of Motions were removed from table and opened for discussion. (Details of each motion were printed in the March newsletter for review by the members prior to this vote.) NOM by Larry Belair. Requested $15,000 for the Salem Boys & Girls Club meals for kids. A good presentation by Larry; no further discussion. Approved unanimously. NOM by Bruce Silver. Requested $1,500 for Stand-Up Salem for a start up substance abuse program. No discussion beyond the presentation in the printed newsletter. Approved unanimously. NOM by George Masciarelli: Requested $5,000 for St. Jude's Children Research Hospital. George presented the information. There was some discussion about a preference for giving locally. Approved by 31-2 vote. New Business Trustees: Tom Campbell requested $300 for Angel Flight. Don Simmons requested $200 to fund the attendance at the State Convention for our seminarians whom we support, (requested by the State Deputy,) $100 for the Field of Dreams concert series and, $250 for Sophia's Cancer Research Fund. (requested by Alan Phair) All accepted and approved. From the floor: Stan Gorgol requested $500 for food, raffle tickets, & supplies for Relay for Life. Motion approved. Charlie Walsh requested $3,100 to be transferred out of the parish capital fund to repair a hole in the driveway, at the request of the parish. Funds were already approved for capital improvements for the parish; no notice of motion was needed. Motion approved. Gene Bryant made a motion to rescind the approved $15,000 for the repair of the parking lot and to return the allocation back to the operating budget. (See new Notice of Motion below. ed.) - Approved. New Notices of Motion #1 By Gene Bryant: This Notice will use the $15,000 previously earmarked for repairs to the St Joseph campus parking lot to pay for removal costs for an old, large underground fuel oil tank. This oil tank was discovered during the surveys associated with the sale of the prior yellow convent house west of St Joseph Church. The existence of the fuel tank was previously unknown and must go back decades, and contained approx gallons of fuel oil. The tank has been disconnected (as far as we know) from all the buildings at St Joseph, and the right thing to do is remove this potentially hazardous situation. The diocese has a contractor that will empty and remove the tank, test for soil contamination, and restore the parking lot surface. Any contamination discovered would need remediation, and that work should be covered by a State of NH Trust Fund that exists for such purposes. 4

5 #2 By Gene Bryant: To donate up to $12500 to reimburse Saint Joseph Regional Catholic School for loss due to asbestos remediation in January The heating system in the gym failed over the New Years holiday period during extreme low temperatures in Salem. Numerous pipes in the system froze and ruptured, but fortunately the new gym floor was not damaged. The $30,000 plus repairs were covered by insurance, but during the repair process some pipes were discovered to be sheathed in asbestos-containing insulation. Repair efforts were halted while asbestos was professionally removed, but that removal is not covered by insurance. The only money the school had readily available was from the capital campaign now underway, and this donation will restore the fund balance back to previous level, so that the ongoing improvements in the school may continue. #3 By Butch Kealey and Mike Petrilli: To allocate up to $20,000 for the replacement of the building's air conditioning system. One of the two units is dead; the other is already five years beyond its expected service life. Competitive bids were received and reviewed by the corporation board of directors. The cost of this project cannot be covered by the council's monthly rent payments. The cost includes all installation and parts and disposal of the existing non-compliant refrigerants. No changes to the existing duct work because of the earlier furnace conversion to gas need be made for the air conditioning. Donation to the Parish GK Dave presents a donation to Fr. Tom from our approved budget. The checks are for the general support of the parish and for the parish community needs (such as the food pantry.) Election of officers for We will have elections for new officers of the council by June 15. Members may self-nominate at the election, but by expressing your desire to run now to Larry, you allow him time to prepare ballots as needed. Your council really needs your help! All you new members and all you not-so-new members, please, please consider stepping up to help our council. Larry Belair - Please be a candidate! Lecturer Report: Ron Bourque Ron recounted the power of Psalm 91. C.B. Morelock, a war correspondent in World War II, reported an unexplained and miraculous occurrence: sixty German aircraft strafed more than four hundred men who were pinned down on the sandy Dunkirk beaches without the benefit of any place to take cover. Although the men were repeatedly attacked by machine guns and bombed by enemy aircraft, not one single man was hit. Every man in that group left the beach without a scratch. Morlock stated, I have been personally told by Navy men who picked up those particular survivors from Dunkirk that the men not only recited Psalm 91, but they shouted it aloud at the top of their lungs! Click Here for Psalm 91. That Psalm is the basis for the Responsorial Psalm known as On Eagles Wings.
