I am blessed to be a part of such a great group of Catholic men. I am proud to call each and everyone of you, Brother Knight. Our summer is fast passing us by, the Fourth of July is over and our summer is about half over. Are you ready to get together as one family for our annual family council picnic? I can already smell the aroma of hamburgers and hotdogs frying on the grills. The children romping around the council hall, and the gathering of community among our families. See you all on Sunday, July 27th. Vivat Jesus! Bill Richards, GK Who is Paul David, our Outside Guard? Paul was born in 1954 in Boston, and raised in Waltham, MA. He attended St. Joseph Parish in Waltham and went to Ecole St. Joseph (it was a French Parish; also, notice how often Joseph appears in this biography.) He has worked in transportation, having varied jobs. He drove limousines for sixteen years, and had one stretch of five years working as a private chauffeur for a couple. He now works for F.W. Webb driving a flat bed delivering plumbing supplies. He was a member of the National Guard for eight years. Paul would often stop by Joseph II restaurant in Waltham for lunch, making casual friends with the staff. One time, he needed a date to take to a formal event, and so he asked the nice waitress he knew if she could help him out. It must have been some event! Wife Debra and he have now been married for 22 years, have a daughter Sabrina (17) and a son Matthew (13). The David family moved to Salem eleven years ago. Looking for a parish, St. Joseph once again became his home. Tony Fabrizio and Jim Broadhurst talked to him about the Knights, and on April, 2009, Paul made his 1st degree. The major reason for Paul's joining was that he wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, part of being something more than just a good Sunday Catholic.

2 Quickie CALENDAR (And see our web Event calendar!) Council Meeting Notes from July 9 UNOFFICIAL from the scratch pad of the editor... 7:30PM: GK Bill Richards opened the meeting with prayer. Enrico Casaletto, newly elected recorder, gave a detailed review of the minutes, which were accepted without change. We adjourned at 9:15PM. There were 33 members attending. He thanked the brothers for their prayers and good wishes for his wife Peg's healing. Also, he reminded us of his need and appreciation for the help he needs with the blood drive, which was to occur next day. CHAPLAIN'S MESSAGE: Fr. John 7:42PM: Fr. John continued his reflections on The Joy of the Gospel by Pope Francis. We are called to go beyond our comfort zone by God. Just as the prophets of old were called to go forth on new missions (think Moses leading Israel out of Egypt, for one!) we can also be called to go into the world and bring Christ to others in our community. Be not afraid. We are called to be a missionary church. If we fully understand the central message of the Gospel, that the infinite and all-powerful tri-une God loves each of us, individually, it will lead to our conversion to see God in our self and in each other and in those beyond our Church. We will see our mission. It may take time, and that's okay. Slow conversion is OK. We are all called to grow in the love of God and to lead all to God. Bills and Communications: GK Bill Richards 8:00PM: The State quarterly meeting is on July 20, St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 777 West Hollis St. Nashua, NH. All members are invited. Thank you notes were received from the Pregnancy Care Center, Salem Care Givers, Angel Flight, and several seminarians for our gifts. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Treasurer and Financial Reports read and accepted: 8:04PM: Bob Fournier presented our six-month budget and actual financial report in detail. Our six month financial review indicates we are on track to have a strong year financially, and our donations will be our best year ever. In addition, as a summary, Bob told us our council's record of charitable giving over the years. Some years have been lean others flush. In addition, Council 4442 members have volunteered thousands of man hours to assist in delivering food and toys around the holidays, feeding the elderly and the poor, building ramps for the handicap, etc. Council members have also raised hundreds of pints of blood via quarterly blood drives and 2 the list goes on! That's why I am proud to be a Knight! - Bob

3 Fournier. 8:21PM: Charlie Walsh reported we have 256 members. As in last month, we again had one gain and one departure. Newsletter and Troop Support Reports: Paul St.Amand 8:23PM: The trial Electronic Forum and Bulletin Board, as described in last month's newsletter, had no show of interest from the members; thus, I will kill off that idea. Old Business: 8:45PM: GK Bill Richards brought the motion to move the council business meeting to Tuesday night. This was requested by our Brothers who staff Wednesday Bingo and thus cannot attend our meetings. Bill limited debate to three speakers for each side. For the move side, arguments were to allow the hard-working Bingo team to attend, especially since they contribute so much to our finances. For the stay side, arguments included existing members would have to change their schedule and some may not be able to attend, and with the new Bingo hall opening in Salem, that might change our Bingo night schedule anyway. After 11 minutes of debate, the question was called: 9 voted to move, 18 voted to stay, and 6 did not vote. Result: The meeting will stay on Wednesday nights. 4

5 New Business: 8:56PM: Tom Campbell brought a Notice of Motion for the Trustees: The Notice of Motion is for money, not to exceed $3500, to replace a fence at the Bishop Peter Residence in Manchester at the request of Marlene Makowski, who is the Administrator for the residence. (I have sent Ron Bourque an with several questions that were asked of me after the meeting. I/ the trustees will hopefully have the answers for the August meeting.) Alan Phair made a Notice of Motion To change the council meeting start time to 7:00PM from 7:30PM. Dave Wilson announced that the AED device has been purchased. Training will be done for any interested members on August 13 (prior to the meeting), with a start time of 6:30PM. Expected time will be 30 minutes. The AED device will be mounted in the council hall; exact location to be determined by a sub-sub-committee of Gene Bryant, Dave Wilson, and Bill Richards, as nominated by Larry Belair. District Deputy Report Dick Collopy 9:07PM Dick encouraged us to attend the quarterly State meeting. There is much information shared, and we could bring back this information for the benefit of our own council. (The State Web site is down for July. 6 4th Degree: The 4th Degree Assembly 641 meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month (except summer) in the council hall. SUMMER VACATION! Relay for Life This year, Relay for Life changed the hours to start at 11:00AM and conclude at 11:00PM for Saturday, June 21. This meant that our Knights' typical set-up operation could not start that Saturday morning and be completed by the Relay Director's timetable. Emergency alerts and phone calls went out to change our plans. On Friday night, phase I of the Relay for Life set-up operation began. Five members, keeping with tradition, jimmied the school garage lock to load our tables and chairs into the truck. We then loaded the tents into the truck. On Saturday morning, Phase II kicked into play. Mike Banks drove the truck to the high school field, where the team was ready to unload and then erect the tents. Job was done by 9:07AM. Finally on Sunday morning, Phase III, the take-down and put-back, was done randomly ahead of the plan by assorted roustabouts and roughnecks and passers-by. Everything was put back into place by 10:32AM, ahead of the original plan start time of 11:00AM. 8 Lecturer's Notes: Ron Bourque a change of pace... The Lost Keys... After a meeting several days ago, a woman couldn't find her keys. She quickly gave herself a personal "TSA Pat Down." They weren't in her pockets. Suddenly she realized she must have left them in the car. Frantically, she headed for the parking lot. Her husband had scolded her many times for leaving her keys in the car's ignition. He's afraid that the car could be stolen. As she looked around the parking lot, she realized he was right. The parking lot was empty! She immediately called the police. She gave them her location, confessed that she had left her keys in the car, and that it had been stolen. Then she made the most difficult call of all to her husband: "I left my keys in the car and it's been stolen." There was a moment of silence. She thought the call had been disconnected, but then she heard his voice: "Are you kidding me?" he barked, "I dropped you off!" Now it was her turn to be silent. Embarrassed, she said, "Well, come and get me." He retorted, "I will, as soon as I can convince this cop that I didn't steal your car!" Captain Jack's Seafood Grille... A group of 15 year old boys discussed where they should meet for dinner. It was agreed they would meet at the McDonald's next to Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because they only had six dollars among them, they could ride their bikes there, and Jennie Webster, that cute girl in Social Studies, lives on the same street and they might see her. Ten years later, the group of now 25 year old guys discussed where they should meet for dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the beer was cheap, the bar had free snacks, the house band was good, there was no cover charge, and there were lots of cute girls. Ten years later, at 35 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. It was decided they would meet at Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the booze was good, it was near their gym and, if they went late enough, there wouldn't be too many whiny little kids. Ten years later, at 45, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the martinis were big and the waitresses wore tight pants. Ten years later, now 55, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the prices were reasonable, they have a nice wine list and fish is good for your cholesterol. Ten years later, at 65 years of age, the once again group discussed where they should meet for dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the lighting was good and they have an early bird special. Ten years later, at 75 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because the food was not too spicy and the restaurant was handicapped accessible. Ten years later, at 85 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. It was agreed they would meet at Captain Jack's Seafood Grille because they had never been there before. Welcome to the golden years... 8
