There are details in the newsletter that cover these activities, but I want to urge you all to participate. We will have an installation of officers this coming weekend, on Sunday, September 22, at 2:00PM. Show your support for your council leadership. (The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 0-2 and going nowhere. You'll still be in time to see the end of the Patriots football game after the installation! ) KnightlyNews@kofc4442.org The state Pro-Life dinner is on October 3. Although the tickets are not inexpensive, this is a cause worthy of your support. Issue , 18 September, 2013 Finally, the Knight of the Year banquet will be held on October 12. (Yes, that is the same date as the State Convention.) If you are not going to the state event, I'm sure you'll attend the Knight of the Year banquet! Charlie was raised in Medford, MA, and attended Malden Catholic High and then Merrimack College, where he earned a Business Administration degree in After a time out in active duty training for the Army Reserves, he started work at Western Electric in North Andover as an auditor, then later worked for 25 years for GTE Sylvania, starting as an auditor and ending up as VP of Finance. My biggest achievement in work was to go from a C student to the VP of Finance. Charlie retired in He is married to Bonnie (Ford), who was also working at Western in the early 1970's; they have three children and four grand kids. While enjoying his favorite sport of golf with Larry Belair, Ralph Miele, and Bill Gallagher, he heard them talking about the Knights. That prompted him to ask about the KofC, and Larry quickly whipped out a Form 100. Charlie had been looking for a way to give something back, and he knew he couldn't do it well by himself. Joining the Knights has enabled him to give back to church and community. He has now put his financial skills to work for our council, taking over the role of Financial Secretary from Vinnie Sarcione in 2012.

CALENDAR (details in newsletter) Council Meeting Notes from Sep 11 UNOFFICIAL from the scratch pad of the editor... GK Bill Richards gave ONE rap of the gavel to start the meeting at precisely 7:30PM. With that one rap, all members stood up; only Paul St.Amand and Jim Broadhurst remained seated, as is proper for one rap of the gavel. (You guys really need to attend a first degree and review the protocol of the meetings! -ed.) At three raps of the gavel, Paul and Jim stood up with the others, and all recited the opening prayers and pledge to the flag. There were 31 members attending. The minutes were read by Jim Broadhurst and accepted. We adjourned at 9:13PM after prayer, including special mention for the victims of the 9/11 attack. The Head Table Installation of Officers September 22 (Bill Richards) Return Raffle Tickets October 1 (Mike Petrilli) Right to Life Dinner October 3 (Dennis Groulx) Knight of the Year Banquet Oct 12 (Jose Moreno) State Convention Banquet Oct 12 4th Degree Assembly Jamboree / Picnic October 19 (Bill Richards) Blood Drive Nov 14 Hockey Dec 31 (Jim Broadhurst) (Reply by Oct 1!!) CHAPLAIN'S MESSAGE: Fr. John Fr. John gave a presentation on the most recent papal encyclical, The Light of Faith (Lumen Fidei) that is unique in that it was written by two popes. The first draft was written by Pope Benedict XVI, before he abdicated. It was added to and completed by Francis I. (The link above is to the full text of the document. This link: National Catholic Register, gives a good overview. -ed) The encyclical is not an easy read. And it certainly cannot be summarized in a short paragraph. Here are some of the topics addressed: Is there absolute truth that we can know? Can reason alone get us to that truth. If it feels good, do it really? Everything is relative. If nothing is acknowledged as objectively real, then competing views cannot be evaluated against the standard of truth, to judge which is valid. Instead, the only way to resolve disputes becomes an assertion of power whether tyrannical or clothed in democratic processes and, hence, the door to dictatorship is opened. Bills and Communications: GK Bill Richards Bill read several thank you's from our scholarship award winners. Also, Bill thanked all those who worked at the Parish Picnic on Sep 8, making it a success. Bill noted with a special Thank you to the newer members of the council who helped with the tent set-up and take down. There will be a 4th degree ceremony on Nov 16 in Exeter, NH. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Financial Secretary and Treasurer Reports read and accepted: Bob and Charlie gave their usual reports. Bob noted that last month, we wrote out checks for $12,600 in donations; Charlie reported that our membership remains at 253 members. Membership: Bill Richards Thanks to the efforts at the picnic, we have several Form 100's in hand. We will interview the candidates shortly. At this meeting, Bill presented the admission committee's recommendation for a reinstatement to the Knights of a former member; the council voted approval. Texas Hold-Em: Larry Belair We ve completed 7 of our 10 annual poker nights and so far, the Council has netted $41,000 thanks to the loyal support from the Poker Team members and their wives. Our proceeds are in line with our budget projection of $59,000 for the year. Our next event will be held on Saturday, October 5th. 2

Bingo Report: Ron Bourque (If a picture is worth a thousand words... These graphs and table say it all! Bingo is doing well! - ed) Pro-Life Dinner: Dennis Groulx There will be a Pro-Life Banquet on October 3 (Thursday night) from 5:30PM to 9:00PM. See the flyer on the web at this link address. (No, Dennis didn't say anything about a computer web link. - ed) The guest speaker will be, Kristan Hawkins, Executive Director, Students for Life of America; Abortion Abolitionist; Author, Columnist, and Commentator. Kristan has appeared in national media, such as: Fox, CNN, EWTN, and The Christian Broadcasting Network. Her work has been featured in numerous publications such as National Review Online, The Washington Times, and Citizen Magazine. This will be at the Executive Court Banquet Facility, 1199 South Mammoth Rd, Manchester, NH To make reservations: please call , or life@nhrtl.org Tickets are $60pp. Mail payment to NHRTL, Banquet, C/o Linda Gould; 1 Hardy Rd.; #146; Bedford, NH Payment Deadline: September 27th Parochial Assistance Program (PAP): Mike Petrilli. The deadline for PAP applications has passed, and we only had five eligible applications for the eight program awards. The current rules say that only children of Knights are allowed, and not grand children. This differs from the rules for the college scholarship program. At the recommendation of the council, we voted to have the rules reviewed by the scholarship committee, and have them report back to the council with their recommendation. The winners of the raffle tickets will be drawn at the State Ball on October 12. I remind everyone that all raffle ticket stubs must be returned to me by October 1, so that we can get them to the Ball in time for the drawing. Any money collected can be given to me or to Charlie Walsh. 3

Blood Drive Sept 12th : Ken Akerley Knight of the Year Banquet: A VERY SUCCESSFUL BLOOD DRIVE! Save the date: October 12. Jose Moreno, the current KOY, is in charge. Our goal was 65 pints. The Red Cross collected 70 pints. I want to thank all of the volunteer knights and their wives. Unfortunately, I did not take the volunteer sign-up sheet with me, so I won't mention the names for fear of omitting anyone. Those who were there, have my heart felt thanks, as always. I am so proud of all of you and proud to be a knight. Tickets are $25/pp. We will have a Ham Dinner and Live Music. P.S. I would like to say a huge thank you to Freda Smith for the goodies she brought to the blood drive, for all to enjoy, and we The social begins at 6:00PM; Dinner at 7:00PM. did! NEXT BLOOD DRIVE NOVEMBER 14th, 2013 BYOB OLD BUSINESS: Gene Bryant for the Trustees We removed from the table the notice of motion made last month for major donations. This motion totals $69,000 for eight donations. (Yes, that's right. I didn't get the decimal point wrong. It is for $69K! -ed) We had a lively debate, not about whether we should or should not donate this amount, but about the timing. We all agreed that these are worthy donations and should be made. Will this be paid out all at once or spread out over several months? It would not make sense to take out a loan to make a donation, because the funds had not yet been received from our bingo or poker events to fund the donation. We concluded that the donations naturally spread themselves out over the future; no loan would be necessary. We voted and the motion passed unanimously. Articles in the Motion Gene presents the motion. (more details were in the August newsletter. -ed) 1) $20,000 For Saints Mary and Joseph Parish, to convert current oil-fired heating and domestic hot water systems to available natural gas supply under Main Street. 2) $25,000 For Saint Joseph s Regional Catholic School, for marketing and scholarships. 3) $9000 For Coats for Kids, an expansion of our effort last year with this project of the State Council. $5760 of the amount is for the Salem NH area; the balance for the needs of children in Father Kyle s Parish in Berlin. 4) $3500 This grant would purchase a solar powered irrigation pump for a facility in Colonia Benito Juarez, Mexico, a project of the Mexico Mission led by Lee Alphen. 5) $5000 To NH Catholic Charities for a program (Our Place) that assists pregnant and parenting teens and young adults from the point of pregnancy through the child s third year. 6) $2500 For friends at the Prayer for Life Center, which is across the street from the abortion mill in Manchester. 7) $2500 The Center for Life Management, here in Salem and Derry, operates a housing complex for seniors (fifteen residents one is a 4th Degree Knight) with serious mental illnesses. 8) $1500 For the Family Promise organization in Rockingham County, serving homeless families in our area. 4

OLD BUSINESS: Larry Belair for the Corporation We removed the motion from the August table for the renovations in the council hall. Details are contained in the August newsletter. This motion also generated lively debate about the timing of the renovations. Should we proceed now or wait until mid-winter, after the Knight of the Year and Christmas banquets have passed? What about anyone who is renting the hall? Will the hall be suitable for use if the renovations were being done simultaneously? The renovation committee gave assurances that the work would be managed as best as possible. Also, the many quotes from the contractors for the work itemized in the motion are only valid for certain periods, as specified in the quotes. If a work item is delayed to next year (or even next month), that quote may not be honored and the price could change. The question was called and voted upon. Larry listens to a question. The amount approved, unanimously, was for up to $40,000. This total includes the funds for renovations and for the conversion from oil to gas. Normal New Business: We also approved: $100 for the Bereavement Ministry of SS. Mary and Joseph Parish. 4 tickets to the State Ball for our two representatives and their guests. An ad for the State Ball (half the total; Assembly 641 pays the other half.) $100 for the Anysoldier.com web site that supports our own troop program. (This is from Ken's grand daughter; see the article below.) Troop Support: - Paul St.Amand and Ken Akerley TAKE 2 In last month's newsletter, we reported that Elizabeth, Ken's grand daughter, was shopping at Dunkin Donuts for a carton of coffees to ship to her husband, and an anonymous person in line paid for her purchase, saving her about $100. She then donated her $100 to the Knights for use in our troop support efforts, to pay it forward. The Lawrence Eagle-Tribune got wind of the story, and called us to get more details. A photographer also was sent to shoot some pictures. Ken and I thought that we might get a nice paragraph or two. Wow! We made the front pages, and above the fold in prime print space! Several photos from our scrapbook of soldier contacts were used, as well as the photo seen of Ken, myself, and Bill Richards, looking over our scrapbook. Front Page! Click here for the link to the article. Ken, Paul, and Bill In other Troop Support news, our most recent shipment of Tootsie Rolls found its way to a Captain with the 157 ARW, who lives in NH and serves out of Pease ANGB. He wrote back to us that when he saw our NH return address, for a moment he believed it was a shipment organized from the guard's Family Program manager, Bonnie Rice at Pease. And strange coincidences... five years ago, early in our troop support program, I met Bonnie Rice at a Pease / Red Hook Brewery troop fundraiser, and helped her with a problem. She had a truckload of donated Girl Scout cookies and no funds to mail them overseas. I eagerly took as many cases of cookies that my Ford Ranger could hold, and then shipped them over the next few months to contacts in the mid-east. So a random contact we donated to in 2013, turns out to have direct ties to someone who helped us with our program back in

Installation of Officers: - Bill Richards Just a reminder that the officer installation ceremony is to be Sunday, September 22, 2013 at 2:00pm at St Joseph Church. I would like to assemble at the hall by 1:30pm and the dress code will be suit and tie. I am planning on finger sandwiches and pastry in the hall after the ceremony and all will be welcome. I am also open to any donations of pastries or cakes, if you wish. Please let me know if there is to be any scheduling conflicts so that we can arrange for installation at a latter date. Parish Picnic Request for Help: Alan Phair WE ARE ALWAYS THERE TO HELP Once again, our Council was called upon to help with the Saints Mary & Joseph Parish picnic. As usual, once the call was put out by Alan Phair, brother Knights came out in numbers to do many of the various tasks needed. Nineteen brothers went out early Saturday morning and loaded tables and chairs, large tents and the Council grill onto the large rented truck and went to Mary Queen of Peace Church and set everything up for Sunday s picnic. On Sunday, there were many knights present manning recruitment and other tables, doing all the cooking, help serve, and many other chores. At the end of the picnic, there were an equal number, although some different, of brothers who then had to break down the tents and load everything back onto the 24-foot truck and take things back to the School Garage and the Council. As Mary Roy always says, we are her savior and without the help of the K of C, the picnic might not be as successful as it always is. Thank you, brothers, for answering the call to service; and a special Thank you to you new members! (It was a very windy day, leading to some excitement about tents flying away. But no damage to people nor tents! - ed) The set up crew. Dead weight to hold down the tent! Count the Poles! Leo likes his hot dog! Bye! See you next year! Rico asks, Wanna join the Knights? Join, or I twist your arm! 6
