May 2019 be good to you, perhaps even your best yet! I hope you had great Holidays with your families and friends. It was wonderful to see our churches so crowded for Christmas. Too bad it s not like that every weekend. If you ve been watching the news, you ve probably heard the saga about Brian C. Buescher s appointment to the federal bench being scrutinized by the Senate Judiciary Committee because he is a member of the Knights of Columbus! As a Knight, they are afraid he will not support abortion, homosexuality and other causes as they want. Two senators think we Knights have extreme positions on such issues. The media are treating this as an insult to the Knights, but I think it s a compliment. It seems Judge Buescher is too incorruptible for their taste. What s particularly ironical is that the senators are breaking the law by even pursuing that line of questioning. They ignore the Constitution to ensure their preferences are honored. To our credit, the Supreme Knight and other spokesmen for our order are standing firm. We can be proud that our order is not surrendering to someone s idea of political correctness. Thank you, Brother Knights, for all you do for our Council, and the people and organizations we serve! Vivat Jesus! Ron Bourque Who is Solomon Huss, our new Insurance Agent? He will gladly help anyone who comes forward to take on this role. You do not need to be a veteran to take on this position. (Rico has set up a good list of activities (see below) for our council through the year. And the budget is already approved. It might be a good way for someone, a non-veteran, to say Thank You to our veterans by doing this - ed) Newsletter & Web Site Paul St.Amand Paul asked the members present if they knew what the blue underlined text is used for throughout the electronic version of the newsletter. Most members attending knew that the underlined text was an embedded link and that by clicking on the link, you are taken to a web page or address for more information. Those attending who didn't know about it, I hope now know. (And as an example, CLICK HERE to get to the Pope's web site. And for those who get the newsletter via the US Mail, pointing at the underlined text on the paper with a pencil gets you nowhere. -ed) Bingo Ron Bourque: The 2018 year end results are in, and the money raised was amazing. 6 WANTED: LOST and FOUND: We have lost contact with member Richard E. Tiner. If anyone knows a good phone number or mailing address, please contact Charlie Walsh, , or to Moderator of this website. Chairmen: What is needed for an Activity Report? Mike Banks does the recordkeeping, such as tracking all results and submitting info to the state. But he needs your raw data. This is the info that you need to send to Mike: Title of Activity / Event: Date of Event: Brief Description: (one or two lines) Total # of Council Members participating: Total # of Man-Hours expended on event: Chairman s Name and Chairman s Address: (For a Blood Drive event, include the number of pints collected.) ALL event chairmen really need to send this to Mike (or call him! ). Trying to collect this info months after the event has occurred is very difficult for the GK, who needs to send summary reports to State and Supreme. January Knight of the Month: Mike Banks Mike goes about unnoticed as he uses his truck every year for the Christmas parade. He attaches the nativity on his truck and installs speakers playing Christmas songs as he pulls our float. Attendance Drawing - The $40 prize would have been won by Francis Leone. Next month we draw for $50 until a lucky member in the hall is picked. Ron and Mike He s the last person to Closing Prayer: led by GK Ron. enter the council to enjoy the refreshments. Meeting adjourned at 8:54 PM. Why? Because he s disconnecting the float, removing and folding the flags, removing the nativity figures from his truck, and carries them into the Council hall. Corporation Hall Rental Policy For hall rental call George Masciarelli at Or, go to the council web site and contact him through . George will match your needs with available dates and send you a rental agreement for your signature and deposit. You must be a member of Council 4442 and/or Assembly 0641 to rent the Corporation Hall, and, you must remain at the hall during the rental period. Full details of fees and policies are available on the web site: Corporation Hall Rental. (Any charity wishing to use the hall must have a sponsoring Knight sign for it.) George can also arrange for members to get a personal key to the corporation hall. 6

7 Some Contact Information for our Council Members' quick access: If you have a question and need to talk, but don't have , one of us should be able to get you an answer! links for GK, Trustees, Hall Rental Manager, Corporation President, and more are on the web site. Grand Knight Chancellor Admissions Trustee (3 yr) District Deputy Corporation Ron Bourque Tom Campbell Norm Comeau Dave Thompson Bill Richards Mike Petrilli Deputy GK Financial Sec. Treasurer Insurance State Deputy Hall Rental Rico Casaletto Charlie Walsh Bob Fournier Solomon D. Huss Glen P. Camley George Masciarelli Lecturer s Reflections Ron Bourque January is Pro-Life month, and Ron talked and raised several points... Nobody wants to talk about abortion We don t participate, not involved, not my issue What about the pearly gates? Will be be judged by what we have done and what we have failed to do? Our founding fathers started an armed rebellion over a tax on tea; and not suggesting anything violent, but should we not take a serious stand for pro-life? This is no longer a partisan issue; we are all called to action for pro-life. In Past Months... in Future Months... Notices of Motion (from New Business) $1,000 for Fr. Brian at St Matthews Dominican Republic Mission trip. By GK Ron Bourque. Please consider a Notice of Motion for $ 1,000 to St. Matthew s Dominican Republic Mission Trip. Father Brian has made 11 trips to DR. He brings volunteers, even high school kids from Central Catholic. The purpose of the upcoming trip in February is to build a new aqueduct to bring water to the Christian school, which is in danger of closing because their water supply dried up. They need to purchase 20 kilometers worth of tubing to make this possible and install the tubing on the trip. The new water source is about 8 kilometers away. $1,000 for Fr. Flanagan s Boys Town, by Paul St.Amand Boys Town was founded over 100 years ago by an immigrant Irish priest, Fr. Flanagan, to care for orphan boys. It has evolved and expanded its mission over that time. Some quick facts: The President and National Executive Director is a Catholic Priest; however, Boys Town is not owned by the Catholic church. It does not receive subsidies from the Catholic church. There are no Boys Town special collections as there are for Catholic Universities or Catholic Education. It now serves 60% boys and 40% girls. (There was a proposal to change the name to Boys and Girls Town, but many contributors objected... It sounds like the Boys and Girls Club. Keep the tradition. Thus the name remains Boys Town. There is a strong Catholic heritage, but Boys Town is non-denominational. All faiths are welcome. All children are required to attend services of their choice on the weekend. The mission is much expanded. It is Changing the way America cares for children and families. There are now family programs and health care. There is an infant and child hearing hospital located on campus. There are Boys Town locations in 10 states, not just Nebraska. The organization is 4 Star Rated by Charity Navigator, named a BBB Wise Giving Alliance Accredited Charity by Better Business Bureau, recognized for its transparency with a Gold Seal by GuideStar, a non-profit information resource. Over 85% of all donations go to programs. Last year, there were over 2 million lives touched by programs, more than 508,000 children in family support, 181,000 contacts to the National Hotline, and over four years, an estimated 2,700 suicides in progress that were prevented. I personally support this mission each year, and my wife Peggy and I had been yearly donors over 10 years. I have a variety of brochures and the 2017 financial report available for more info. 7

8 Welcome to Mary, Queen of Peace Church Back in June, the Council approved $2,000 for the replacement of the old Mary, Queen of Peace sign. Under the watchful eye of Brother Steve Baretto, new signage was ordered, and the frame was straightened out and painted. The funds came from the annual church projects budget item. Great job, Steve. Knights News Brief - Happenings in our State Click here to access the State Council's News Brief Ash Wednesday is six weeks away, Fr. John Michalowski passed along some thoughts for Lent and Easter. I will put a few in over the next several newsletters. Thanks, Fr. John! The Sign of the Cross. It is the Sign of the universe and the sign of our redemption. On the cross Christ redeemed humankind. By the cross he sanctifies us to the last shred and fiber of our being. We make the sign of the cross before we pray to collect and compose ourselves and to fix our minds and hearts and wills upon God. We make it when we finish praying in order that we may hold fast the gift that we have received from God. In temptation we sign ourselves to be strengthened; in dangers, to be protected. The cross is signed on us in blessings in order that the fullness of God s life may flow into the soul and fructify and sanctify us wholly. Think of all these things when you make the sign of the cross. Make a large cross, taking time, thinking what you do. Let it take in your whole being body, soul, mind, will, thoughts, feelings, your doing and not-doing and by signing it with the cross strengthen and consecrate the whole in the strength of Christ, in the name of the triune God. (Signs, Romano Guardini, p. 13). Ashes. Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. This is one set of words that greet us as the priest makes the sign of the cross on our foreheads with ashes. As we enter into Lent, we recall that we are mortal. We will die. Like Adam and Eve in Genesis, we realize that sin leads to death, and we cannot save ourselves, only God can. This is why we are sometimes greeted with the words, Repent, and believe in the Gospel. We are signed with the ashes for we are creatures of mortality and sin, but we are signed with the cross. Through Jesus embrace of death on the cross, we are given the grace to repent and through the Gospel share in the power of the resurrection. Let us embrace both our mortality and the journey of repentance as we walk the path of Lent this year. (Where's Karl? If you are wondering, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson didn't make it into this edition... - ed) 8
