3 Dear Parishioners Several months ago I preached a homily on the need to keep the Sabbath Day holy. After a few of you inquired more into what it means to keep the Sabbath Day holy, I decided I would spend this bulletin article talking a little bit about it. Of course, keeping the Sabbath Day holy is the 3 rd of the 10 commandments given by God to Moses as terms for keeping the covenant He made with the Israelites. For us, the 10 commandments have become not only terms to keeping the new covenant, which was sealed in the blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God, but they also teach us how to be more human. In essence, the 3 rd commandment is to remind us where we are going and that we are not made for this world. In Exodus 20 God gave Moses the 10 commandments with the 3 rd one stating: Remember the Sabbath day keep it holy. Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the Lord has blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. The word holy literally means to be set apart. Thus, when speaking of holy things we are speaking of things that have been set apart for God. God who is the creator of all the visible universe (as is stated in Genesis) can make holy whatever He desires. Our new Church building is something that was made holy when the Bishop came and consecrated it a year ago. This means the building itself is set apart for God and primarily used for a sacred purpose like the Mass, the other sacraments and prayer. But we must remember God is also creator and author of all time too. And He can set apart or make holy certain times just for Himself. For Jewish people this holy time is the Sabbath, or seventh day, of the week (Saturday) as the commandment states from the Old Testament. But because we believe Jesus was raised from the dead on the first day of the week (Jn 20:1), for Christians the new Sabbath becomes Sunday. So what does it mean to keep the Sabbath Day holy? Well, because of the length of this article I can only touch on 2 things. First, it is a day of worship. The word worship comes from a derivative of an Old English word worthscipe which literally mean worth-ship. Something that is worshipped is something that has the most worth in our lives. For many people this means wealth, pop and movie stars, sports (even LSU athletics!!), material things or even other people are worshipped as idols far more than God Himself. But for practicing Christians the Sabbath Day is set apart for worship of God because He should be what is worth the most in our lives. For Catholics the perfect form of worship is participating at Mass (unless we are sick or unable to physically go to Mass for a legitimate reason). By doing so you are joining yourself to Christ s offering on the cross in worshiping the Heavenly Father. Hence the doxology prayer at the end of the Eucharistic prayer through Him (Jesus), with Him, in Him in the unity of the Holy Spirit all glory and honor is yours almighty Father forever and ever- to which the congregation says Amen! The second way we keep the Sabbath Day Holy is by rest. The commandment states we should avoid work on this day. However, the Church reads this in light of specific cultures and context. This certainly doesn t mean all work (as a priest, I have to work on Sundays and so do some others!!!). What I have said in the past is all unnecessary work work that could be done on the other 6 days of the week should be avoided. Why?...well, because it is a day of rest. In scripture the word rest does not mean to sit around all day and be lazy as may easily be interpreted. In the letter to the Hebrews chapter 3 & 4 the author speaks of resting on the Sabbath. What he means essentially is savoring the good things that truly matter in this life and in the next. It s stopping from the 6 days of work and resting in the Lord with prayer and worship and savoring the things we should be grateful for like our family and friends. Again, the Sabbath Day rest is pointing us to heaven each week and reminds us where we are going. In the end, by keeping the Sabbath Day holy through worship and rest we make ourselves more human. If we get stuck on the 6 days of work, it s easy to get bogged down and forget that we are not made for this world! So remember six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God, so let s keep it holy! Have a wonderful Week! 5 Reflection of the Week B O J Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. L 24:38-39 The garage doors had been inoperable for months, mostly because I was convinced it would be an expensive repair. A handyman, here on another job, snapped a part into place, pushed a button done. I was both joyful and shamed because of the easy fix. I was elated at the simplicity and zero cost, but a little embarrassed that I d not understood that the situation wasn t really that complicated after all. I think about the distance between my own weaknesses and God s promises. It seems like a pretty big space. But during the Easter season, I m reminded that bridging the gap might not be as fraught with problems as I m tempted to imagine. I hear Jesus words, and yes, I m a little abashed about what I ve been blind to, what I ve resisted. But more importantly, I m filled with joy, assured of his presence. Risen Lord, in you I find peace. Amy Welborn from Living Faith RCIA T Y! To Billie Lemmiksoo for attending the Chrism mass on Wednesday of Holy Week and bringing back the blessed oils that we use throughout the year. To Katelynn Ellis for carrying up the Oil of Catechumens in the Procession of Oils during the Holy Thursday mass. To all the RCIA catechumens, candidates and sponsors for carrying up the Cross on Good Friday evening. To all those who serve in the ministry of sponsoring. What a wonderful gift you are! And last, but not least, to my wonderful RCIA team who work so hard throughout the year walking the journey of faith with those entering the Church. t t w v i. The morning will be led by Dana Territo at St. Joseph s Academy Mother Alice Hall. The aging process guides the individual through a re-evaluation of one s life; and ultimately leads to understanding one s own true spirit, the vital center or core in our lives. Spiritual experiences through events in life and through moments in relationships can make us more aware of understanding that vital core within us that brings meaning and purpose to our lives. This retreat explores the spiritual dimensions of aging, spiritual development and spiritual self. For individuals and for caregivers. There is a $40 fee.
