2 November 18, 2018 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B We can always tell when we are nearing the end of the Liturgical Year and getting close to Advent when hear about the end times in the readings during Mass. The Gospel this weekend depicts just that. It opens with Jesus talking about a great tribulation, and the sun and moon being darkened, and stars falling from the sky. This is all pretty scary stuff. If I saw stars falling from the sky with my own two eyes I would certainly think that the world was coming to an end. Thinking about the end of the world can make us a little scared. But we cannot forget that with the end of world, we also have the Second Coming of Christ. The stars falling from the sky, and these other things, are the immediate things that will happen prior to Jesus coming. This Second Coming is a good thing, as it means that the next life is being ushered in, along with the resurrection of our bodies, and the final judgment of humanity, meaning the reprobate going to hell, and the elect going to heaven. Jesus Second Coming is one that will be a very victorious and majestic event. The Gospel says that Jesus will come in the clouds with great power, and also with the angels. This will be a great and glorious event for those who will enjoy the happiness of eternity in heaven, and likewise it will be horrendous for those who will suffer the misery of hell. So this Gospel sort of does an anticipation of all this to help prepare ourselves for it. The heart of the message is get right with God now because only God knows when this day will come. There is a similar anticipation built into the Liturgy. In the Mass we don t just look back to Jesus death on the Cross, but we also look forward to the day when Jesus will come again in justice, bringing the righteous to heaven, and sending the wicked to eternal judgment. The Mass helps to prepare our souls for the coming of Christ. The Eucharist give us a taste and a glimpse of what heaven will be like, which can encourage us to repent and amend our ways now. We don t know the day nor the hour when Jesus will come. We also cannot assume that we will go to heaven. There is only one judge, and we cannot judge others nor ourselves. So as we meditate on the end times in anticipation of Jesus coming in victory, let us do some real self examination. May we change our ways now so that we will reap a heavenly reward. With every Mass that we celebrate may we be that much closer to realizing our heavenly life. Reflection by Fr. Braud

A Vigil Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 7 th. Masses on this Feast Day will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. These Masses DO NOT count towards your Sunday obligation. Book of the Dead For the month of November we will remember our deceased in a special way. The Book of the Dead will be accessible in the vestibule for parishioners to write the names of beloved deceased relatives for whom they would like us to pray.

Steve Bruno Sponsored by: It was an honor today to deliver 100 children s coats to the New Orleans Women s and Children s Shelter. The coats were generously donated by students and parishioners of Visitation of Our Lady Parish to the Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids Drive. The St. Thomas More Knights of Columbus Council 7226 was humbled with the outpouring from the community. The 100 coats represents 100 children who will each be comforted from the cold this winter. Sidney Coleman, the Shelter s Outreach Director, was happy to receive the donation just as the cold front approaches. Just think, our community touched the lives of 100 defenseless children who were at risk of not having warm winter clothing, and made a positive impact on the lives of each of them. God has been very gracious in giving us the ability to help others. Vivat Jesus, Greg Galle, Grand Knight Christie Bourg and Immaculee Ilibagiza with some of the volunteers from the retreat. This past Saturday, VOL hosted a retreat given by Rwandan genocide survivor, Immaculee Ilibagiza. The retreat was beautiful! We laughed, cried, danced, and prayed. The retreat required months of planning and lots of volunteers. When we began making our to do lists, I realized how many people we would need, and I must admit, I got nervous. I m a planner, so I like all my ducks in a row before events. But this event required so many volunteers to fill all types of roles! I did the best I could asking for help, and I left the rest up to God. And boy did He provide! It seemed as though we had exactly what we needed, when we needed it! A big thank you to all our volunteers those who set up, unpacked, worked registration and the bookstore, those who took care of the audio and video, those who greeted, cooked, served, cleaned, and helped get the church and cafeteria back to normal YOU MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE! Without everyone working together, there s no way we could have pulled this off! Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart! I know many of us don t want to join ministries for various reasons. I get it. This event took months of planning, but in the end, I made many new friends and was able to witness the joy and healing in the faces of those who attended. I feel truly blessed to have been a part of such an amazing event. If you would like to be a part of our parish by serving in a ministry, please give me a call.
