3 Dear Parishioners, Life Together WOW! was the expression that Bishop Muench used as he began his homily, admiring the beauty of our new church of St. George. The ceremony dedicating our new worship space ( baptizing our new church building ) could not have been better. God blessed us with good weather. There were more than 100 parishioners in our entrance procession, all who played various roles in the dedication ritual. There are so many people to thank! I begin by expressing our gratitude to Bishop Muench, Fr. Tom Ranzino and his talented Office of Worship Staff, who led us in the dedication ceremony as well as the twenty-five priests or so, who joined in the celebration. Many of them have ties to St. George, either by being stationed here at some time, or serving as seminarians and transitional deacons. I want to express our gratitude to Ann Bertsch who directed our dedication committee. She was so well assisted by Blake Bruchhaus who organized the many ministers involved in the celebration. Our (adult & children) choir did St. George proud! All of the musicians, choir members and cantors are St. George parishioners. There were no imports from other churches or paid musicians. Jack Dirks directed the parking for the many people who joined in the celebration. I am not aware of any issues. Leslie Doyle and her reception committee did a wonderful job planning and organizing the reception in our gym. Thanks to so many of you who donated food and items for the reception. Thank you to the Men s Club for preparing the delicious jambalaya. Thanks to John Gerbrecht and Jan Dupre for leading the jazz ensemble that provided the music for the reception. If you were not able to participate in the reception, I hope you saw pictures of the phenomenal cake that Ambrosia Bakery prepared for us. Felix & Cheryl Sherman and their staff outdid themselves! The cake was a perfect representation of our new church building, including the bell tower, the roofing tiles and the stained glass windows. And last but not least, I want to thank our wonderful, talented, and generous St. George Church Staff. They were in the background supporting the members of our Dedication Committee. We are blessed! We are thankful! We only have two more weeks of Lent before the celebration of Easter. So a few reminders: The Light is On for You for two more Wednesday evenings: April 5 and 12 from 6:00p.m.-7:30 p.m. The last Fish Fry is this Friday evening from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Check out the information on page 9 about the St. George Parish First Annual Easter Egg Hunt scheduled for this Saturday, April 1st. Our annual Habitat for Humanity collection is this weekend. The actual Catholic Build is on Saturday, April 8. Please notice the information on page 8 of this bulletin. Please continue to pray for our Elect as they make their final preparations to be full initiated into our faith community at the Easter Vigil. Also, remember our Confirmands and our 2nd graders preparing for the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. Remember to bring palms with you next weekend, April 8-9, when we begin Holy Week with Palm/Passion Sunday. Please continue to pray for one another! Love, St. George Mission Statement St. George Catholic Church is an open, loving parish community united by our faith in Jesus Christ. Located within the Diocese of Baton Rouge, we are closely bound to our diocesan family and the universal Roman Catholic Church. Our prayerful liturgies are community celebrations shaped by a tradition of over one hundred years of Eucharistic worship on this site. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we are called to use our gifts to express our praise, love and thanksgiving to God. We challenge and support one another in humbly living the gospel message and serving the common good as witnesses of Jesus Christ. In support of this mission, St. George Catholic Church strives to: worship God with devotion and celebration; foster continued spiritual development and growth; provide a challenging and quality-filled Catholic educational program; listen and respond to the needs of the parish community; nurture, support and strengthen the family; reach out with love and compassion to serve those in need. The Scrutinies are a ritual celebrated within the Sunday assembly on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent. These ritual celebrations are communal prayers celebrated around the elect to strengthen them to overcome the power of sin in their lives and to grow in virtue. To scrutinize something means to examine it closely. The community does not scrutinize the catechemens; the catechumens scrutinize their own lives and allow God to scrutinize them and to heal them. The scrutinies give those who are chosen for the Easter sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, (the Elect) and indeed, the entire assembly, an opportunity to examine their own hearts and minds by the light of the Gospel. The scrutinies include intercessions for the elect and they also include prayers of exorcism. Exorcisms are prayers for deliverance from evil and for the strength to be faithful to the gospel. The elect kneel in humility as the community prays with and for them. After these prayers are said, the elect are dismissed for further reflection on the Scriptures before the rest of the assembly celebrates the Liturgy of the Eucharist. On the third scrutiny (5 th Sunday of Lent), we will hear the story of the raising of Lazarus. Each Scrutiny gospel helps all of us to reflect on our lives and help us to answer the questions: What is it that I thirst for? What blindness do I need healed? What in my life holds me bound? 5 Reflection of the Week U C Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil... P 23:4 Few of us escape the dark valleys of Psalm 23. Some of us encounter these valleys often, perhaps even daily. They come in the form of unexpected tragedy, persistent anxiety, discouragement, sorrow, depression, many forms of loss, physical debilitation and numerous other experiences of vanished joy and stifled hope. Psalm 23 was written thousands of years ago to assure each person in their dark-valley times that they are cared for unceasingly by the Good Shepherd. Even though we may be unaware of this presence, the psalmist assures us that this generous divinity never abandons us. Instead, we will be given what we need to make it through our dark valley: repose, refreshment, guidance, courage, nourishment, goodness and kindness. Read the psalm aloud, slowly. Let each line greet you with a rekindling of hope. Sr. Joyce Rupp, O.S.M. from Living Faith Spirit al Life, cont. C S G S The High School Confirmation Small Group Sessions will take place on Sunday, April 9 from 7:00 9:00 PM in the KAC. ALL CANDIDATES MUST ATTEND.
