3 Page 3 Clergy Corner Each year on the Sunday after Easter our Church celebrates that which is now known as Divine Mercy Sunday. Certainly, God s mercy to us is something that we can and should celebrate year round. However, as we now stand in the shadow of the Lord s resurrection, this gift of divine mercy becomes even more obvious at this time in the Church year. It is through His death and resurrection that Christ Jesus offers to us His mercy. And it is the celebration of the Lord s resurrection that we seek to continue and to emphasize throughout this Liturgical season of Easter. In order to help celebrate the Easter event, I would like to mention that the plan of God s mercy is something that began long before the life, death and resurrection of God s Son. In fact, we can easily say that our God created this world to begin with so that the divine life of the Blessed Trinity could be shared with someone other than Himself, namely the human race. In other words, down through the centuries, our Triune God worked through the events and the stages of human existence in order to prepare us for the gift of His own eternal life. When humanity had finally reached a minimal understanding of God s existence and love, then God s own Son freely chose to come to this earth in order to bring us this very gift of eternal life. In short, we can say that the resurrection of the Lord completes the very plan which our all-knowing God had set forth from the very beginning of time (and before). The event of Easter is not only an essential part of our faith. It is the highpoint and the very foundation of our salvation. It is to that very first Easter that our all-powerful God has guided His creation. And it is this Easter event which we seek to deepen within our lives during this Liturgical season each year. 4 Page 4 After a 10-month state department of justice investigation into the shooting death of Alton Sterling, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry announced that no charges would be brought against the two Baton Rouge Police Department officers involved. This morning s announcement follows a similar finding by the United States Department of Justice last May. BRPD Chief Murphy Paul indicated his department is continuing an internal audit and administrative review of the case, and the results will be announced Friday. Let us take time during this Holy Week to pray for healing for all who have been wounded by this tragic event. As we walk the way of the cross during this last week of Lent, let us pray for the Sterling family, for law enforcement officials who risk their lives for our public safety, and for racial healing and transformation in our community. As Catholics, we are continually called to conversion, to build bridges of dialogue, understanding, respect and life-giving action with all of our brothers and sisters. May God bless our city this Holy Week, and may He move our hearts and our wills to work for the establishment of peace and justice on earth.
