3 Dear Parishioners, Life Together The weekend for moving into our new church, gets closer and closer. If everything continues on schedule, our first weekend in the new church will be February 25 th -26 th ; only five weeks away! The light fixtures are in the process of being installed and the new pews are expected to arrive January 30 th. A lot of work still needs to be done but I m told everything is on schedule. I m sure you noticed that our main altar was missing this weekend. We are using the altar from our day chapel for the time being. Both our altar and the ambo (lectern) will be refinished and used in the sanctuary of our new church. I m very pleased that we have found a new home for the pews and the organ in our present church. Greater Mount Olive Baptist church on Victoria Drive was flooded in August and they are excited and grateful that they will be able to use our pews. Additionally, the Holy Cross Benedictine monastery in Beaumont, Texas will move our present organ and install it in their monastery. I m sure you have seen signs of additional construction on our campus. The construction of our newest mausoleum has begun. American Cemetery Consultants expects the mausoleum to be complete in early summer. This is the 7 th mausoleum in our St. George Cemetery. It will have space for 390 crypts and 96 niches. Contribution statements for 2016 will be mailed to St. George parishioners this month. I encourage you to engage in private, prayerful conversation regarding your financial commitment to God s work among us, especially through the ministries and programs of St. George Church. The St. George Church/School Auction is scheduled for Saturday, February 4 th at L Auberge Grand Ballroom. This year s theme is Boots & Badges. Having so many people in costume adds so much to the spirit and fun of the event. You can access both our Church and School websites to purchase tickets for our annual auction. Fr. Brad will leave for Washington, D.C. this Monday, accompanying many young people of our Diocese who are participating in the annual March For Life. Please keep them in your prayers! A reminder that our parish mission this year will be during Lent this year, in our new Church. The dates are March 13 th -15 th. It will be given by Fr. Michael Allelo, pastor of St. Louis King Of France Church in Baton Rouge. The theme is: Re-purpose Your Life in Christ. Please continue to pray the Prayer for Unity and Racial Harmony. The prayer is printed on page 4 of this bulletin. Have a joyful week and remember to pray for each other. Love, St. George Mission Statement St. George Catholic Church is an open, loving parish community united by our faith in Jesus Christ. Located within the Diocese of Baton Rouge, we are closely bound to our diocesan family and the universal Roman Catholic Church. Our prayerful liturgies are community celebrations shaped by a tradition of over one hundred years of Eucharistic worship on this site. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we are called to use our gifts to express our praise, love and thanksgiving to God. We challenge and support one another in humbly living the gospel message and serving the common good as witnesses of Jesus Christ. In support of this mission, St. George Catholic Church strives to: worship God with devotion and celebration; foster continued spiritual development and growth; provide a challenging and quality-filled Catholic educational program; listen and respond to the needs of the parish community; nurture, support and strengthen the family; reach out with love and compassion to serve those in need. 5 Reflection of the Week W G W Wait for the L with courage. P 27:14 It seems as if we are always waiting for something. When we are young, we just want to be older. We want more responsibility to be able to drive a car or start a family of our own. This never seems to stop. For as we grow older, we create new lists of things to wait for for our children to grow older and leave our homes, for retirement, for the uncertainty that comes with old age. The gift and wisdom of God is patience. When we wait for the Lord, we remember to not get ahead of God s plans for our lives. Indeed, there is more courage in waiting for God s will to be made known to us than there is in trying to figure out and face all of life s changes on our own. God, give me the courage and the wisdom to patiently discern your plans for me. Steve Givens from Living Faith Spirit al Life, cont. G S. 7 Building Upon Our Roots This will be a milestone year for St. George. Our new church is nearing completion. There is still so much to do. Our architects and contractors assure us that on February 15 they will be able to hand the church keys over to us. Our tentative schedule of events: The weekend of February should be our last weekend in our present church. We are planning a special ritual at all of our Masses that weekend to say good-bye. Wednesday, February 22, is the feast of the Chair of St. Peter. That evening, we are planning a prayer service that would begin in the present church, then in procession, we will transfer the Blessed Sacrament to our new church. We will conclude the prayer service in the new church. Daily Masses will be in the new church the remainder of the week. If everything goes according to plan, all of our Masses on the weekend of February 25-26, will be in our new St. George Church. Our annual Parish Mission given by Rev. Michael Alello is scheduled for March On Sunday afternoon, March 26 at 3 p.m., Bishop Muench will officially dedicate our new Church. A dedication reception will follow. There is a lot of work and planning to be done. If you are interested in helping with the transition, please let us know at the Church Office. The Dedication Committee has a number of sub-committees and there is room for your talents and expertise. If you would like to volunteer to donate food and/or help with the Dedication Reception on March 26, please contact Leslie Doyle at Above, right: A floor mosaic prior to installation. G S B P Every January we enter into the Stewardship of Finance phase of our parish Total Stewardship program. Everyone knows the importance of thoughtful planning. It is an important aspect of almost every decision in life, certainly every financial decision. Before we spend, we weigh our options, wisely investing the funds we have on hand or expect to receive. We plan. This wisdom is also essential with our Church Community. As you reflect on your financial giving, please prayerfully consider your commitment to this important stewardship effort in advance. Remember: Giving generously to address the needs of this parish is a work of faith. Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Jesus asked his disciples in the first century. Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? (Luke 14:28, 31) True then, the principle has obvious merit still. As often as we can, we think before we act. The Lord encourages us all to plan. When we think of generous stewardship, we plan our giving. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 9 January 22, 2017
