1 KING SOLOMON TERRITORIAL LODGE #5 ESTABLISHED 1881 HISTORIC SCHIEFFELIN HALL FREMONT & 4TH STREET TOMBSTONE, ARIZONA Honoring our heritage embracing the future January, 2015 In this Issue of the HEADSTONE: FROM THE EAST 1&2 MASONIC BIRTHDAYS 2 ASSOCIATED ORGANIZATIONS 3 FROM THE DDGM 4 GENERAL EVENTS CALENDAR 5 NEW EDITORS 6 Contact the Lodge Secretary by at: kingsolomon5tl@hotmail.com The Lodge regular mail address is: King Solomon Lodge #5 PO Box 1343 Sierra Vista, AZ Our website is: KingSolomon5 FROM THE EAST I want to start off this month by thanking those who could attend the installation of officers on December 21 st. I hope you enjoyed it at least as much as I did. If you would like electronic copies of the pictures, just let me know. Everyone needs to know that the work started and supported over the last 3 or 4 years continues. We have, by invitation, appointed a Lodge member to the Tombstone Food Bank Board of Directors. WM Phillip R. Shulsky This is an honor for the Lodge and speaks highly of the many members who have offered their time for the good of another. We will continue to attend the civic meetings, as we have in the past, and we will increase our efforts in the Masonic section of the Tombstone Cemetery. It turns out that not only did many of you speak highly of this effort, but the city and tourists do too. An addition to the priority list, at least from my perspective, is supporting and encouraging the MANY Masonic organizations. I am hoping an active member of each Masonic group will brief the Lodge on the activities and projects of their group. Knowing when they meet is nice, knowing what they do is better. Speaking of what is done Masonry is not about how well you perform ritual, or about what you wear to Lodge. Heck, it isn t even about attending every Lodge event. It is about how we live our lives and how we treat others. I think it is almost.no.it is more important to practice Masonry every day, outside the Lodge than it is to practice it a few hours a month in a Lodge setting. So Brothers, spread the light of Masonry not with your words, or attendance, but with your actions.
2 (MORE) FROM THE EAST I view Lodge membership as having four distinct categories. We have Brothers who join by receiving the degrees, others who join our Lodge through affiliation, once they are members; they are either active or inactive. We have done a very good job over the last 3 or 4 years initiating new Masons and our current active membership is strong, dedicated, and loyal. Where we are not doing as well is gaining membership through affiliation and re-energizing inactive Brothers. Our Lodge has a long and vibrant history and we need to share that. I will be asking the History Committee to prepare a short article for all of the County newsletters, talking about our history. It is hoped that some will find this to their liking and affiliate with the Lodge. It is more difficult to resolve the inactive problem. I recently talked to a Brother who stopped attending Lodge because the Master at the time told him he could not attend Lodge dressed as he was. This Brother was just getting off work and would not have had the time to go home, change, and get back for the meeting! Brothers, please pass this word around.. What you wear to Lodge, at least this year is unimportant (as long as you wear something). We are a western Lodge, so western wear is appreciated but if a member doesn t have it, wear dress pants and a collared shirt, wear blue jeans, wear just about anything just attend. And don t let ritual keep you away. We will work with anyone who needs some refresher on ritual, at least enough to get you through a meeting. Is anyone interested in a rusty nail degree? Let me know and we will put one together. There is also the continued Tuesday practice at the Sierra Vista Masonic Center. They continue to meet at 4:30 and will work on whatever you need. It is very much worth your time! Finally my Brothers, be mindful of your words. You never know when the last thing you say to someone will be the last chance you get to talk to them. If WB Bruce Wood s sudden passing teaches us anything, it is the uncertainty of human life. Also, by way of reminder, the annual widow s luncheon will be held on February 21 st. PLEASE view this event as a tug on your cable tow. We are obligated to our Brothers even after their death and honoring their widows is the very least we can do for them. If we were a military organization, I would say it was your place of duty. Since we are not, I would ask that make every effort to attend. Oh, and if you ve yet to pay your dues, please write a check or Money Order for $ made out to the Lodge and send it to: King Solomon Lodge #5, PO Box 1343 Sierra Vista, AZ JANURAY MASONIC BIRTHDAYS BROS. 4 FROM THE PAST DDGM EDUCATION! The following is the second article that includes Q & A as part of the education program. It is an effort to educate all Brothers and the information is taken from the correspondence courses provided by the Scottish Rite Master Craftsman Education Program. Question #1 What are the two schools of thought in Masonic research and how are they characterized? Answer a two part answer #1 Authentic historical / transactional history #2 Romantic circumstantial / ritual evidence of old origins. Question #2 What is the evidence that points to the notion that Freemasons were a privileged position? Answer select one answer. a Many famous people were Freemasons. b The founding Fathers of several countries were Freemasons. c Early Masons were wealthy landowners. d Freemasons met above taverns. e None of the above. Answer none of the above. The key word is free and the information provided in the monitor is very lengthy but oh so interesting. Question #3 What were the Schaw Statutes of 1598 and 1599, and what did they do? a - Statutes founded on the old charges (Gothic Constitutions) b - Formed a basis of government for modern Masonic Grand Lodges. c - Introduced several terms and concepts which continue today. d All the above. e - Both b and c. Answer = All the above. As you can imagine the information contained in the study monitor is goes at great length to discuss this information. If interested in more information contact me and we will discuss more. January is the month when the newly elected and appointed Lodge Officers have been installed and ready to go to work. Much is said about the problems confronting Masonry today. Can we continue to show progress each year? Can we maintain the interest of our members? If the problem confronting our lodge appears great, it should be remembered that any job, no matter how big, can be done if sufficient persistence and determination are employed and the willingness exist to pay the price in energy and labor for its accomplishment. We should start NOW to do the things we know we should do as Master Masons. Then we soon would spell NOW backwards. Success would be achieved and our goals would be WON. The best time to start is today, the best place, right where we are. The repairs and upgrades of our lodges is to important to continue to put off, we must start now so the Membership will be proud of our Lodge and will want to be more fully associated with it.
