Taylor (K Dan owland), dubbed our very own water boy by ndy Bednar and a fountain of information according to Dallas Woodall, served as the otary Club of Warren s President from s Past-President, he shared a bit of his history with members at our September 20, 1929 meeting. Visiting otarian, Laurie Harris from Cortland, as well as Diane Sauer s guest, obb Schmitt who is ssistant thletic Director at YSU, and Darlene Mink-Crouse s husband, Dan, were also present. In 1896, Halsey lost his father to typhoid fever caused by contaminated water. Years later, as a Plant Superintendent for the Packard Motor Car Company, he noticed that illness was spreading quickly among the workers. gain, he suspected that something was wrong with the drinking water. These personal experiences inspired Halsey to dedicate his life to providing a safe drink of water in public places. In 1912, he developed the Puritan Sanitary Fountain and began producing it at the original Halsey Taylor manufacturing site here in Warren, Ohio. Our own George Thompson was a past employee. The era soon brought the dawn of WWI, and sanitary drinking water in overcrowded army camps was a major problem. Halsey s answer to this concern was a bubbler, known to many as a water fountain, which would provide a safer drink. The resulting development of the historic Double Bubbler remains one of the industry s most important innovations. It projects two separate streams that converge to form an abundant pyramid of water at the apex, for a fuller, more satisfying drink. It seems likely that new and exciting products and innovations will

The Double Bubbler has made his drinking fountain the water cooler of choice, with 80% of them being manufactured in the United States. Halsey promises that his number one priority will always be to ensure the safety of those who drink from his fountains. ll who were present at our meeting raised glasses of purified water in a toast to Halsey Taylor, who has satisfied thirst since 1912! If you fast forward to the 1950 s, Halsey and otary Club of Warren were instrumental in forming the Trumbull County Society for Crippled Children, which led to the founding of the Halsey W. Taylor ehabilitation Center in Originally located in a small home on Laird venue, near Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, the Center quickly grew and eventually moved to Howland. The Center is still in operation today and is known as Children s ehabilitation Center. If you have any items pertaining to the history of the otary Club of Warren for our Virtual Museum, contact ndy Bednar or Christine Cope so that arrangements can be made for a photo shoot. Don t forget to submit the name of your favorite charity to to Venita Collins by 12/31/17 as part of our Club s 100 Good Deeds. contribution of $100 will be given to the non-profit organization of choice for each of our 79 Warren otarians. These supplies will provide an entire meal for families, and they were recently shipped to Texas and Florida as part of ise gainst Hunger. YSU COCH SETS NEW STNDDS FO HIS TEM his Men s Youngstown University native T years Cincin served as assistant standout throughout and years national O Y Jerrod Calhoun is entering his first season as Head Men s Basketball Coach at Youngstown State University, but he's no stranger to the sport. native of Cleveland, Ohio, Jerrod played for two years at Cleveland State before transferring to Cincinnati, where he served as a student assistant. He was a standout player throughout his high school and college career. fter graduating in 2004, he spent the next eight years as an assistant coach, first at Walsh University, where he was part of the Cavaliers NI national championship squad, and later at West Virginia.

7 In 2012, Calhoun was hired as Head Coach at Fairmont State University State University, where he eventually guided his team to four NC Division II Tournament games and the school s first-ever appearance W in a t appearance in a title game earlier this year. On March 27, , he was named the 13 th basketball coach in YSU history. Incidentally, over the past 10 years, Jerrod has belonged to five five different otary clubs! Calhoun lived in YSU s dorms for his first 55 days on the job job, and one thing that stood out was people. Through this experience and by reading Lead for God s Sake: Parable for Finding the Heart of Leadership, he learned that coaching needs to be about relationships. s a result, the standards that he instills in his team center around six words: appreciation for the opportunity t to wear the jersey; communication on a high level; an attitude that E that has a positive impact on others; grit, a determining factor in in sports and the business world; a purpose that guides you beyond N basketball beyond basketball; and growth on a daily basis. Since starting at YSU, Calhoun has landed eight new players, players, including four high school graduates, three junior college players, and one Division I transfer. He enjoys getting out in the community the community and is involved with the local schools and United Way Way. He welcomes fans and the media at practices. Calhoun believes that Youngstown has hard working people who wil who will sacrifice for others. His fundraising efforts have garnered O $130,0 garnered $130,000 to date, which are being used to renovate the locker rooms and upgrade the basketball facility. Calhoun indicated that his motto is win forever. His goal is T is for his team to shoot 20 more shots than their opponent. With With his roster of 20 guys, including seven local young men, he feels that the Horizon League has no idea what s about to hit them! them! Coach Calhoun challenged our members to attend at least least one game this coming season. He promised that we will see an exciting brand of basketball and a team which reflects the positive qualities of the Youngstown area! Y

She also encouraged everyone to attend Taste of Warren, part of Warren s Homecoming Celebration. Finally, she promised to arrange a otary Night at one of YSU s basketball games this season! ** Chris Shape is hopeful that this week s surgery will be his last one. If all goes well, he should be walking in eight months. (We re rooting for you, Chris!) nd of course, a Happy Buck given for his Steelers! ** Cindy Matheson was appreciative of our speaker and for her brother s house surviving the hurricane in Florida!
