Will it be beneficial to all concerned? venues of Service Club Service Vocational Service Community Service International Service Youth Service On January 29, 1988, oberta Graham (K Diane Sauer) was pleased to address the otary Club of Warren as as one of its newest members. Earlier in 1987, the United States Supreme Court mandated that men-only service organizations, such as otary, the Kiwanis, the Lions Club, the Exchange Club, and others, must allow female members. John Kurtz, a prominent attorney in town, introduced oberta. Visiting otarian, Mary Williams from the Cortland Club, and Lauren Georgialas and Lenna Dunaway, guests of Scott Lewis and Barry Dunaway, were also in attendance. oberta is a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and attended Hiram College. She currently resides with her husband, Walter, who is a local realtor, and her daughter, Holly. When oberta was a board member of the Warren YWC, she and Dorothy Klein, a program director, felt that older adults needed their own group. They founded S.C.O.P.E. (Senior Citizens Opportunity for Personal Endeavor) in a store front on Pine Street with a card table and a few chairs in the 1960 s. In 1982, the City of Warren began building a 10,000 square foot building with Community Block Grants so that they could have a senior center. The goal was to keep seniors living in dignity, while making the later years of life worthwhile and stimulating. oberta is an active member of the community, having served on countless boards, the YWC, VN, Contact, WP, and others. She is a member of the National Council on ging, the Ohio ssociation of

In 1962, she was named Warren s Woman of the Year, and in 1986, Trumbull Community Leader of the Year. lthough she was so happy today, oberta expressed disappointment that a handful of otarians, some of them past presidents, have decided to resign from otary as a result of women being allowed to join! She believes that if they would just stay in, they may find out that women are not really so bad. Her hope is that maybe, one day, 10% of otarians will be female! Wouldn t that be wonderful!! s a post script, the following women joined otary after oberta: *** Mickey Wilson from Copperweld Credit Union was introduced by Hank Saxon in March of *** Vicki Breckner, a minister, was introduced as a new member by Fred Miller in June of *** Helen Estabrook was named an Honorary otarian by Chuck Foley in pril, *** Diane Sauer was introduced as a new member by Bob Sauer in ugust, s a post, post script, while traveling to Hawaii for a convention with her husband, Walter, oberta unexpectedly passed away in November, 1992 at the age of 75 years. Many thanks to Barry Dunaway for coordinating our luncheon at the Hippodrome. If you were unable to attend, you missed a wonderful afternoon, including a glimpse of the group picture taken this past year

Our group Centennial photo has been submitted to the otarian magazine. We appreciate the efforts of Bob Jadloski, Lauren Kramer, and Heather Sahli in making the photo possible. Our Centennial Gala was held on Saturday, January 27 th, at the valon Inn and esort. This once in a lifetime celebration was truly a special evening, with dignitaries recognizing our Club s accomplishments, presentations about our history, and more! Programs from the Gala are still available; see ndy Bednar if you would like a copy. If you had a photo taken that evening, don t forget to pick it up; they were put in a special Centennial frame. If you have any candid shots, please forward them to Judy Masaki, so that others can enjoy them in the newsletter. We are confident that we ll get good coverage of the event in the Tribune. E N sts to our January one and only O T The completion of the everse affle was a nail biting experience with an exciting finish. The last five tickets drawn were all held by Warren otarians - Cheryl Oblinger, Don Powers, Ginny Bond, Christine Cope, and Kim Straniak. In the end, Christine and Kim were the lucky winners, splitting the Grand Prize. Congratulations! President ndy Bednar would like to thank all who attended the Gala, as well as the entire committee who worked so hard to make it a special celebration. ll in all, a very heartfelt letter received from Phyllis Jenkins summed up the evening well: Congratulations on a well-orchestrated event!! 10 WEEKLY NNOUNCEMENTS W E N O T This Y Join us for our next Club meeting on February 7 th at Noon. We ll be back at Enzo s. The otary Club of Warren s Board of Directors will meet at Saratoga estaurant on Thursday, February 15 th. Fellowship will begin at 5:30 p.m., hosted by Kim Straniak. The meeting will follow promptly at 6:00 p.m. Our Slice of the Valley Pizza Challenge will be held on Sunday, February 25 The Metroplex from 4 to 7 p.m. We are still in need of gift baskets!! Contact Christine Cope or Kim Straniak to donate. THE MGIC OF NICK VEIN The guest speaker at our anniversary meeting was our own Nick Verina. Nick holds a Bachelor of Fine rts Degree from Kent State University, with a minor in Education. He is a Past President of the otary Club of Warren. His career has included positions as: rt Director for WYTV; Co-owner of his own company, Twin Custom rt, serving customers like Packard, GM, and Mercedes; a Teacher of Commercial rt at Choffin Career Center; and a Graphic Designer with Berk Enterprises, Inc. Like many of us, Nick has to work in order to make a living. However, he also devotes his time and energy to an interesting avocation performing magic! Nick became interested in the art of magic at a very young age. He has been a 50 year member of the Youngstown Magic Club, an organization which he served as Past President. He is also a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Order of Merlin Excalibur. fter his college graduation, he and his twin brother worked for John Kenley, who gave them their actors equity, allowing them to tour with stars, such as obert Goulet. Their night club act toured from coast to coast, and they played in the top supper clubs, opening at The Living oom. Today, Nick continues to entertain the crowds with shows throughout Ohio. For example, he recently performed at the Columbus Magi-Fest, the oldest annual magic convention in the United States, and one of the largest and most revered. In May, he will perform at the 27 th nnual International Battle of Magicians in Canton. On January 29 th, the ever-entertaining Mr. Verina wowed Warren otarians and guests. With his magic wand in hand, Nick performed feats with ordinary cubes, rope knots, and paper, leaving all present
