Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Avenues of Service Club Service Vocational Service Community Service International Service What a treat it was to have Mr. Paul Warfield (AKA ick Peduzzi) join us for our November 29, 2016 meeting! Paul is a native of Warren, where he was a star running back and defensive back at Warren G. Harding High School in the late 1950 s. He also played basketball and ran track and field at Harding. Warfield went on to attend the Ohio University. He continued have success as a running back and defensive back and was part of Ohio State s National Championship team in In 1964, Warfield was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and converted to the position of wide receiver. In his rookie season, the Browns won the NFL Championship Game. He was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 1970, eventually earning a place on their Honor oll and assisting them in victories at Super Bowl VII and Super Bowl VIII. He later played for the Toronto Northmen of the World Football League, a team which eventually moved to Memphis, Tennessee and became the Memphis Southmen. After the WFL dissolved, Warfield returned to the Cleveland Browns in 1975, becoming a valuable asset as a receiver and in public relations. From 1981 to 1987, he served as Director of Player elations for the Browns, and from 2004 to 2013 was Senior Advisor to the team s general manager. Just this year, Warfield was excited to be a part of hiring a new coach for the Browns and the 2016 draft. He explained that they had two great choices for quarterback and numerous other draft picks. He really feels that 2017 is going to be the Browns year! Paul Warfield received many honors throughout his pro football career, including being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and making the Sporting News list of the 100 Greatest Football Players. It was a pleasure visiting with one of Warren s own stars! Youth Service

6 TITLE I SEVICES IN WAEN CITY SCHOOLS doesn t end there. existing Warren W A E N O T A Y Karen Kilpatrick was born and raised in Warren, Ohio, where she is currently a resident. She was educated in the Warren City School system and later majored in Education at Kent State University. After raising her daughters, in 1996, she was hired part-time into the Title I department of Warren City Schools and given the assignment of creating and implementing a Family Partnership for Academic Achievement and School Success at oosevelt School. She proceeded to research and train her way to a level of expertise that was recognized by the Title I director. She was subsequently hired for a full-time position at the district level in 1999, to replicate the success achieved at oosevelt. 20 years ago, Karen had her first speaking engagement with the otary Club of Warren, asking for volunteers to read to her students. She came full circle this past week when she read Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens, a common core text exemplar, to us. It was a delightful story about an enterprising hare who used his wits to overcome hardships. However, the connection to otary doesn t end there. Last year, otary underwrote a project in collaboration with the Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership to establish community gardens on old school property sites. Several Little Free Libraries are also located in neighborhoods with an existing Warren Community Garden. These libraries follow a take one, leave one philosophy. This initiative, called Bookworms of Warren, aims to reinforce literacy skills, stem the phenomenon of summer slide, and create interaction between community gardeners, neighborhood residents, and school children. Writing workshops are also held at the community garden sites in an attempt to develop an anthology of garden stories and personal experiences. These libraries are important because they are in areas where the population is underserved. They also provide opportunities for children to interact with adults who can have a positive impact on their lives. Unfortunately, a few of the libraries are in disrepair. Please take the time to adopt one of these libraries. Go visit, take a book to read, restock the books, and help clean up! In this way,

7 we can continue to provide intellectual stimulation and spread literacy across our underprivileged neighborhoods! W TIPLE JACKPOT A This week, the Grand Jackpot was $874. Congratulations to Daily Winner, Patty Augustine E HAPPY BUCKS *** Patty Augustine was a happy winner! N *** Julia Wetstein told us that she is happy to be able to connect with with otarians everywhere. She met a new otarian in Huntington Beach Beach, California recently. She also offered a Happy Buck in honor of of the beautiful otary Christmas tree at the Packard Museum. Thanks, Thanks, Venita! *** Bill Beinecke is happy that his Pitt Panthers beat the Miami Hurricanes! Hurricanes! *** Mary Ann Porinchak put in a plug for the National Packard Museum s Museum s Museum Merrymaking event, which was held December 2 nd. O *** Diane Sauer said that Matt will be happy about winning the Early Bird Drawing Bird Drawing for our everse affle, and she s happy that her Buckeyes beat the Buckeyes beat the Wolverines! T *** Andy Bednar offered a Happy Buck in honor of Diane Sauer, one of 3 women entrepe of three women entrepreneurs being honored by the Youngstown Business Incubator. Congratulations, Diane! A Y Why is it that if someone tells you that there are one billion stars in the universe, you will believe them, but if they tell you that a wall has wet paint, you have to touch it to be sure?
