2 otary Motto Service Above Self 4-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Avenues of Service Club Service Vocational Service Community Service International Service Youth Service Helen Hart Hurlbert (AKA Diane Sauer) was pleased to be a part of the otary Club of Warren s July 27, 1948 meeting. It was a special day for her, as she announced that she just recently purchased a radio station. She brought us up to speed by starting at the beginning. Helen was born on October 18, 1892 in Chicago, Illinois to Frank and Zell Smith Hart. Three months later, her father passed away, and her mother moved to Warren, Ohio. She was just three months old when her mother wheeled her into The Tribune office in a baby buggy! You see, Zell Smith Hart was the society reporter, which meant she wrote everything from funeral notices to livery stable ads. Zell remarried, and as Mrs. Deming, became the Publisher and Manager of The Tribune and merged it with The Chronicle in Helen, meanwhile, was busy growing up and attended Abbott academy in Andover, Massachusetts and Miss Wolcott s School in Denver, Colorado. On September 16, 1916, Helen married Griswold Hurlbert, President and Treasurer of Bostwick Steel Lath Co. in Niles. On their honeymoon, which was a cruise from Nova Scotia to New York City, a German submarine seized the liner, forced the passengers to abandon ship, and then sank it. They were rescued in Newport, hode Island. Helen became publisher of The Tribune upon the death of her mother in April of 1936, continuing her work of continuous growth and modernization in order to better serve the Trumbull County area. Her husband, who had attended the U.S. Naval Academy before graduating from Colgate University, entered the Navy after the start of WWII. He died on July 13, 1944 of a ruptured appendix suffered at the base in the European Theatre of Operations.

WN began on November 11, Helen posed an important question to our Club: What s it take for a woman to be a member of otary!! Diane Sauer filled us in on the rest of Helen s career. In the 1950 s, a construction permit was issued for WHHH TV UHF Channel 67, but was never completed. Helen was an ardent supporter of the arts and the Kenley Players, and the annual parties at her home for the Kenley Players were the social events of the season. She was also deeply interested in the preservation of the historic places in Trumbull County and was instrumental in moving the John Stark Edwards house to South Street. The house was subsequently moved to Monroe Street. There were many proposals to change the look of Courthouse Park, including a parking mall or auto storage underground, or even a series of specialty shops. Helen was adamant that no one would change the trees, the fountains, and the sidewalks. Helen helped establish, with Paul Martin, the Trumbull County Soap Box Derby. The race was held on a piece of land in Braceville Township. Unfortunately, Helen broke her hip in 1978, and that accident caused her to not be as active. Her daughter Zell Draz took over the daily operations of the paper. Helen Hart Hurlbert passed away on January 25, Secretary Judy Masaki Treasurer Cheryl Oblinger Past President Julia Wetstein Board Members Ginny Bond Christine Cope Tony Iannucci Dominic Mararri Ted Stazak Kim Straniak Nick Verina President Andy Bednar reviewed highlights of the otary Club of Warren s Centennial year. Over the past year, we inducted three new members, and a fourth was inducted today! We also honored two Paul Harris Fellows. We did a lot of celebrating this year, including a Centennial Gala, a 100 th Birthday Party Meeting, and a very special Presidents Night, where 16 individuals who served as president of our Club and are still

4 otary Club Foundation Board President Chris Shape Vice-President Diane Sauer Secretary Judy Masaki Treasurer Cheryl Oblinger Andy Bednar Jim Ditch Cindy Matheson Teri Surin Contact us at: otary Club of Warren P.O. Box 68 Warren, OH members today were honored for their contributions. Our Foundation is stronger than ever, reaching over the $300,000 mark, and we allocated more than $100,000 to charities in our 100 th year! Our projects included planting 100 trees to beautify local parks, as well as initiating restoration of the fountain on Courthouse Square and the carillon bells. We had fantastic programs, and let s not forget about our fun, yet educational Fellowship 2.0! ick Peduzzi got a little confused, portraying Steven Tyler instead of Dr. James Tyler. Dave Smith presented a very memorable Larry Kiracofe, and Dan owland well, certainly a most entertaining impersonation of our own Diane Sauer and Alex Trebec, when Warren otary was mentioned in a question on Jeopardy. The Super Seven, ick Peduzzi, Diane Sauer, Chris Shape, Dan owland, Ken LaPolla, Dave Smith, and Scott Lewis, went above and beyond what Andy envisioned and thought could be possible! This year s Board of Directors, along with about 29 individual members who assisted with projects and fundraisers and many other needs throughout , were recognized with gift certificates and custom made popcorn (Blue and Gold Blueberry Lemonade and Centennial Cinnamon). Once again, many thanks to all of our members, their families, and our friends who helped to make our Centennial Year so memorable!
