2 otary Motto Service Above Self 4-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Avenues of Service Club Service Vocational Service Community Service International Service Youth Service Our March 21, 1997 meeting began with otarian John W. Kurtz (AKA Dave Smith) leading us in song. With an enthusiastic, All right, everyone up on their feet! Who is ready to sing today?!, we began by honoring our newest Community Star, Andy Bednar, with Bednar, with a otary rendition of For He s a Jolly Good Fellow. Visiting otarian, Jim Tallman, from the Niles Club, and John s guests were also present. They included: John s daughter and son-in-law, Leanna and Barry Dunaway; granddaughter, Brooke; and great-grandchildren, Preston, Bryson, and Kenton. As we gathered on the second day of spring, John was excited to be wrapping up a very important Club project. Over the past year, the otary Club of Warren has held different events to raise money for the Carillon Bells that are currently being installed at the courthouse in downtown Warren. Once they are in operation, they will ring on the hour, and at Noon each day, they will play a short song. Wednesday has been designated as Warren otary Day, and the familiar tune, -O-T-A--Y, that spells otary,

John thanked all of the otarians that have joined him on the committee to make this project possible, including our current Club President, his son-in-law, Barry Dunaway, who s doing a fine job as president his year! otary has always been a source of pride for John, as it gave him the opportunity to give back to our great community. John was born and grew up in Middletown, Ohio in the 1930 s and 40 s. After high school, he entered the service and attained the rank of Tech Sergeant in the 274 th Armored Field Artillery. He served in Europe during World War II as part of General Patton s 3 rd Army. Upon being discharged in 1946, he enrolled at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in Not only did he leave college with a degree, he left with a wife! Mary Lou and John met in the glee club at UC, and they married in 1950 after graduation. For John s first job, he entered private practice law, where he worked until 1952 when circumstances brought him to Northeast Ohio. He was recruited by former Warren otarian Carl Thomas to join his firm that specialized in real estate law and probate. As it turned out, his good friend at the time, Hershel McNabb, was married to Ginny Thomas, who was Carl s daughter. So, Mary Lou and John moved to Warren and have been here ever since. John eventually took over the company upon Carl s retirement, and it now exists as the Trumbull County Abstract Company. Community involvement has always been very important to John. He is celebrating his 43 rd anniversary as a member of Warren otary. He recalled so many great memories, including serving as our president in 1973 and 1974 and being a member of the otary Wheels instrumental group. He found it a joy to play for the kids each year at the annual Christmas party. John has two main passions in his life music and tennis. He met his wife through music, and he also worked to make music a more prominent part of this community. That led him to founding and serving as the director of the Warren Civic Chorus. The original choral group presents Handel s Messiah each holiday season. He also takes a lot of pride in founding the Warren Symphony Society, which we all know today as the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra. Collectively, these two organizations have contributed greatly to the cultural enhancement of our community. As far as his love of tennis, it led John to be a part of a group of organizers that founded the Warren Olympic Club, a community swim and tennis facility. He loves to watch tennis as a sport, which has taken him around the world to see the Australian Open,
4 otary Club Foundation Board Wimbledon, the French Open, Monte Carlo Open, and several Davis Cup Tournaments. In fact, he just recently returned from the Australian Open in January, where Pete Sampras defeated Carlos Moya in the men s final, and Martina Hingis defeated Mary Pierce in the women s final. final. *1999 At& John closed by saying how much he loves our President Chris *200 Shape community and the great people who are a part of it. There are so many gems in it! Sometimes, Vice-President people simply have to look for them. 7 of twer carillon can r use of W A E N O T A made determines t Y TUMBULL COUNTY COUTHOUSE CAILLON BELLS POJECT Patrick Dochenetz has been employed by the Verdin Company of Cincinnati since July, He is a Sales epresentative for Michigan and Northern Ohio in bell hardware, electronic carillons, tower clocks, and street clocks. He works with customers to provide solutions for existing equipment, as well as new products. He also works hand in hand with field service technicians in order to effectively and efficiently promote the usage of Verdin products for a variety of services. He was previously Team Captain at Ohio Northern University and a Marketing Intern at American Trim, L.L.C. Verdin has been in existence since 1842 and just recently celebrated their 175th anniversary! Patrick described the company as having a family mindset of building with your own hands. They originated the electrified clock tower, and Schumerich, which is now a part of Verdin, created the first carillon ringer. A carillon system is a musical arrangement of bells which can ring on the hour, assist others in setting and keeping time, and be used during celebrations. Verdin s products have proven to stand the test of time. They have completed more than 50,000 installations worldwide. Verdin s bells are made of 80% copper and 20% tin, a combination which provides the most beautiful sound. Their mobile bell foundry can cast bells up to 250 pounds on site. Bells as large as 2,500 pounds are made in the Cincinnati foundry. The weight, diameter, and shape determines tonality. Patrick reported that Verdin has completed many projects with otary International, and they are currently in the midst of planning
8 prere W A E TIPLE the repair of Warren s bell clock tower and installation of a new carillon bell system on Courthouse Square, which will be funded by the otary Club of Warren. Our system will include an alert system, allowing the speakers to be brought to full volume and broadcast alerts for inclement weather and emergency situations. It will be able to be accessed by a remote device and will include prerecorded messages, live microphone, and alert tones. The digital carillon component has the capacity to play a music library of 7,000 selections, one of which will, of course, be that familiar tune, -O-T-A--Y, That Spells otary. The system can also be played manually. Club members are working on recruiting Diane Sauer to give it a try! Patrick indicated that Verdin is ready to move forward with the project, and our city s clock tower and carillon system will be up and running this summer! TIPLE JACKPOT N O This week, the Grand Jackpot totaled $62. Congratulations to Daily Winner, John Brown!
