Hello everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful fall day. Our meeting this week was another great one. Diane Sauer was back on the keyboard and Chris Shape was at the podium filling in on Fellowship for Michael Notar. This time he covered the top two winners of the Darwin Awards. The awards are given to those who have improved the gene pool by removing themselves from it. Needless to say, the winners are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. We will leave it at that. We were delighted to welcome a number of guests today. They were: Jesse Matheson, Cindy s brother; Tony Paglia from the Regional Chamber; Robbie Shape, Chris s son; Dr. Jeff Morrison, who recently moved here from the Washington, DC area; and John Brown, Councilman from Warren.

Jennifer Campbell is no stranger to Rotarians, but what we did not know about was her newly formed non-profit organization, Queen for a Day. Its goal is to make a difference in the lives of women, one day at a time. Queen for a Day recognizes two women each year who have overcome adversity and used their experiences to assist other women. She believes that each woman has a divine purpose on this earth and she hopes through her organization s efforts that the dreams of each woman are restored. Each woman selected for this honor receive a new wardrobe, attend a girlfriend luncheon, have a complete makeover, are the honoree at a huge reception, receive a Mayoral Proclamation, and are provided with donations valued at over $10,000 to further the work of their volunteer efforts to improve the lives of other women. Everyone in attendance could see how passionate Jennifer was about her organization. She distributed nomination forms for Rotarians to use should anyone want to nominate someone for this honor. If anyone has additional questions, would like to volunteer, or donate to Queen for a Day, they can contact Jennifer at hermajesty1216@aol.com or at We thank Jennifer for sharing this information with us and for so graciously filling in at the last minute. We look forward to hearing more as the next Queen is crowned. Warren Rotary s Newest Paul Harris Fellow Dallas Woodall, our Foundation Chairman, was again able to present a Paul Harris Fellow to Warren Rotarian Jim Ditch. Jim has been in Warren Rotary for nearly 15 years and has continuously supported Rotary in its humanitarian efforts. Through his gift, he will not only be supporting Polio Plus, but also Rotary s efforts to promote international peace, address literacy, and improve health in countries around the world and here at home. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Jim for his generosity. Congratulations on joining the ranks of other Paul Harris Fellows. Bill Horton s Eulogy For those who were unable to attend this week s meeting, we are the text of Bill s eulogy conducted by Dallas Woodall. I thought this would be an easy memorial to do. I like to expand upon the obituary and common knowledge about a former member. With all that Bill

4 Horton did during his 80 years in our community, you d expect a plethora of resources. Rotary Club Foundation Board President Chris Stephenson Vice President George Thompson Secretary- Treasurer Cheryl Oblinger Mike Bollas John Campolito Diane Sauer Chris Shape Contact us Rotary Club of Warren P. O. Box 68 Warren, OH Our Website warrenrotary.org If you have suggestions or comments regarding our newsletter, or would like to become a sponsor, please contact Cheryl Oblinger. You are absolutely right! Bill Horton left a marvelous legacy as he believed in service above self even before joining Rotary. However, that being said there was so much said by others that not much was left for me. Therefore, I will review, maybe plagiarize, what has already been printed about Bill since his death. Bill was the owner/operator of Horton Electrical Contracting, Inc., retiring in He was a member of the Southington United Methodist Church, Trumbull 100, Boy Scouts of America, SCOPE, Inc., West Farmington Masonic Lodge #57 (past Master), Children s Rehabilitation Board (past President), Southington Township Water Board, Trumbull Shrine Club, the Buckeye Club, Buckeye Investors, and the Air Force Community Council. The Tribune editors opined that the small town of Southington will miss Bill. In addition to his activities listed in the obituary, he also put up the Christmas lights on the church tower. He is remembered as one who always stepped up if it was for the betterment of his community, Southington Township. Bill s community service began in the 1950 s when, at the age of 19, he took over a Boy Scouts of America Explorer Post. In 2013, some 60 years later, he acted out a scene during an Ohio Chautauqua performance in downtown Warren. The entire community lost a tireless volunteer. Bill installed electricity at the Relay for Life events; he served tirelessly on the United Way Board of Directors. He worked on the Warren City Schools Strategic Planning Committee and served stints as President of Children s Rehabilitation Services and SCOPE, Inc. Former Trumbull County Republican Party Chairman Craig Bonar was quoted as saying if he sees a need or a project, he gets involved. Bill was named man of the year by the Harriett Taylor Upton Association and was a 2003 Tribune Chronicle Community Star. Finally, the editorial concluded by saying he leaves his heart throughout our community. Our Tribune Chronicle community friend, Bob Copeland, wrote a special interest story about Bill in today s Tribune. Bob mentioned Bill s stepping up to serve his community and described him as a very community-minded person and a pillar of the community. Bob interviewed three people who had many contacts with Bill over the years. Jack Morse, business manager of the IBEW Local 573, recalled working with Horton when he was an apprentice at Horton Electric and described Bill as being fair, well-liked and a generous employer who took care of his employees, often over and above.

LaRue Harshman recalled Bill as a fellow member of the Southington United Methodist Church where for many years, he served on the church board and the trustees. She added that we always said if you needed to get something done at the church, call Bill. He did everything. Donald (or Buzzy as many of us know him) Guarnieri lauded Bill s help with the Western Reserve Horse Show and the Camelot Center (a non-profit riding program whose mission is to provide therapeutic horse riding lessons and programs). Don said that 30 years ago while sitting on his horse, he heard a voice behind him say, hello. It s going to be a nice day for a show. That voice was Bill astride his horse at the Western Reserve Horse Show, who was competing against Don in an event. Don didn t know Bill s name, but knew right away that he was something special. Don recalled how Bill personally installed all of the electrical lights for the show, working from an old gray truck, up a ladder, with no assistance, from early in the morning until late at night. Then, he followed that up with cooking six turkeys over charcoal to feel all the others. Don also talked about the extra mile a friend will walk. When Donald s son Lewis was about to get married, Lewis went over the list of guests and approved them, but added I don t care so long as Mrs. Horton attends. When Lewis graduated from Michigan State Law School one January in the midst of a winter storm, Bill and Beverly showed up in East Lansing and attended his graduation. Don surmised (and I would be willing to bet) that Bill made many such long journeys for friends and neighbors to, as Don said, improve the quality of their lives. Don said Bill s life is one to be an example for future generations. From Andrew Herman, Community Columnist: Mr. Herman repeated many of Bill s attributes and regretted that he had only a 700-word column to tell all the good Bill did. He quoted Matthew 6:19-21: Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. Shelley Taylor, a former member of our Club and the wife of our former president, Nick Odille, said that almost every (community) service organization in this area received some help from Bill in one way or another. She called upon all local retirees to use their eons of experience and knowledge to volunteer in their communities with all the vim and vigor of youth. Mr. Herman recalled that last year, at the age of 79, Bill and a friend dug up and replaced the old sprinkler system at the Women s Park in Warren while

6 he was cleaning out the pond. Bill installed the previous system years earlier and wanted to update it because he felt it needed done! 2013 Chocolate Festival Vendors PMG Chocolatiers Diana s Delectable Chocolates From My Hands to Your Heart Biscotti s Uncle Jim s Foods Table of Temptations We need to follow the advice of Mr. Herman who said, Nevertheless, I won t shed a tear for this great man because (he) was as humble and no-nonsense a man as one could ever meet. To honor Bill when (we) volunteer on future projects, (we) will keep his enthusiasm in (our) chests. Well said, Mr. Herman. I was almost ready to put my draft to rest when I realized that everyone had talked about Bill s feats, accomplishments and contributions. There was one more aspect of Bill that needs to be mentioned his values. Those values probably resulted in all of the things he did for all of us. When you talked with Bill, he was free to give you his pros and cons on various matters and individuals affecting our community. And, as might well be expected, those values were well thought-out and sincere. He had little patience for laggards and phonies. Those values underlie some of the reasons for his contributions and why we loved and respected him so. Bill will be missed by many organizations in his greater community, including the Rotary Club of Warren, but more so by his wife of 42 years, Beverly; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jill Kreske of Mentor; his granddaughter, Kelly, and her husband Michael Antos of Mentor; his grandson, Kevin Kreske of Mentor; and his brother and sister-in-law, James and Marilyn Horton of Champion. Bill Horton, rest in peace. You earned it and you deserve it. District Events District Gala November 16 th at the University Center at Kent State University, Stark Campus. The event begins at the Davis Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens, continues on to Oh WOW! and wraps up at the Taylor Building (Mahoning Valley History Museum). REMEMBER OUR BUSBOY! Please remember to drop a dollar or two in the tip basket for our busboy. He is at Enzo s early and then stays late to clear all our tables after the meeting. Sometimes, we are a little messy and there is a lot to clean up. We know he would appreciate your thanks.
