1 Sunday, September 3, 2017: The Rainbow Practical Points for Discussion September 3, 2017 Sunday, Lesson Text: Genesis 8:20-22; 9:8-17 King James Version (KJV) I. GOD S PROMISE (Genesis 8:20-22) 20. And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21. And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man s sake; for the imagination of man s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. 22. While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. II. A COVENANT ESTABLISHED (Genesis 9:8-11) 8. And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, 9. And I, behold, I establish my covenant with

2 you, and with your seed after you; 10. And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the 11. And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the III. GOD S TOKEN OF THE COVENANT (Genesis 9:12-17) 12. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13. I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the 14. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15. And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the

3 17. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the New International Version (NIV) I. GOD S PROMISE (Genesis 8:20-22) 20. Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. 21. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. 22. As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease. II. A COVENANT ESTABLISHED (Genesis 9:8-11) 8. Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9. I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10. and with every living creature that was with you the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the

4 ark with you every living creature on 11. I establish my covenant with you:never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the III. GOD S TOKEN OF THE COVENANT (Genesis 9:12-17) 12. And God said, This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13. I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the 14. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15. I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the 17. So God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the

5 PRACTICAL POINTS FOR DISCUSSION: 1. God s mercy and grace should elicit our heartfelt praise and worship (Genesis 8:20-22). 2. Under God s covenant, life is wholly secure no matter what upheavals or calamities are in the past (Genesis 9:8-11). 3. God s promises are as certain as the orderly laws by which He governs His wonderful creation (Genesis 9:12-15). 4.
