The Haftorah begins on page 826 in the Hirsch and page 1134 in the Stone. In the first aliyah, we read of Avraham s predicament on the third day after his circumcision. Avraham was visited by G-d Himself as a tribute to his having undergone this circumcision, thereby elevating himself far above the rest of humanity. Because Hashem wanted to spare Avraham from the stresses of his daily routine of caring for guests, He made it unbearably hot ensuring no guest would come. As this lack of guests caused Avraham even greater pain, He organized three angels, dressed as people, to cross his gates. The Torah mentions And he saw twice to teach us a valuable lesson. Many times we see a situation and get enthused at first but with the passage of time our emotions subside and our enthusiasm dissipates. Not so with Avraham. He saw, not only on an emotional level, that an opportunity had arisen, but on an intellectual level as well. Intellectual commitment never dissipates. This was Avraham Avinu, totally consistent in his behavior. The Torah relates how the old and infirm Avraham most graciously attended to his guests with alacrity and care, never worrying about his own personal situation. After having benefited from his hospitality, the angels brought their message of hope to Avraham and Sarah: a child would be born to them. Question to Ponder: Our Sages tell us say little and do a lot. Where do we see this maxim manifest itself in Avraham s behavior? In the second aliyah, Sarah laughed in disbelief that she would be blessed with a child. After this news, Avraham was informed that S dom, home to Lot, would be destroyed. Avraham showed his love for humanity by interceding on behalf of the S domites to see if by some chance they could be saved! Unfortunately, no righteousness could be found there and Hashem vowed to carry out His original plan, to destroy S dom. Question to Ponder: Can you explain the different points of Avraham s argument with Hashem? The angels arrived in S dom, in the third aliyah, and Lot was warned that though the city would be destroyed, he would be saved. Only Lot, his wife and daughters were saved from destruction. His sons-in-law had already forfeited their chance for life. Unfortunately, his wife did not adhere to G-d s message of leaving totally and showing no regrets. Therefore she was punished measure for measure. She had shown miserliness with regard to salt, which was plentiful in S dom, and thus she turned into a pillar of salt.

2 Parsha Continues Question to Ponder: Can you contrast Lot s benevolence to the strangers with that of Avraham s? How was Lot s kindness deficient? Three events are recorded in the fourth aliyah: the destruction of S dom, the subsequent downfall of Lot and his daughters, the events of Sarah s second abduction (this time by the hand of Avimelech, King of G rar) and how Sarah was remembered by Hashem and a child was born to her. Our Sages teach that Yitzchak was born in this miraculous fashion to be the paradigm of the miraculous nature of G-d s chosen people. He was called Yitzchak from the word tzchok, ironic joke. This is the nature of the Jew, his ironic continued existence despite being up against the most trying circumstances. Question to Ponder: If Lot s sin with his daughters is so grave, why are their offspring the seeds of Moshiach? The fifth aliyah relates how Yishmael was a terrible influence on Yitzchak. This caused his expulsion from the house of Avraham. Though it was not easy for Avraham, as it went against all of his natural tendencies, Hashem told him to listen to Sarah. Purging evil influence was the right thing to do. Once he realized that this was Hashem s will, he performed the act with his usual alacrity. Yishmael was near death, but was saved nevertheless, as he was judged only on the merits of who he was and not who he would become in the future. Question to Ponder: Why was it necessary for G-d to save Yishmael? In the sixth aliyah, Avimelech, awed by all the miracles performed for Avraham, made a pact of peace with him. Question to Ponder: Was the peace treaty a good idea? In the last aliyah, the Torah relates the incident of Akeidas Yitzchak, the binding of Yitzchak!
