ב ס ד Hilchos Rosh Hashanah 1 מ ה ר ב ש ל י ט א Updated 5779 Davening & Benching On the first night of Rosh Hashanah, if one forgets ה מ ל ך ה ק ד ו ש he does not need to repeat Shemoneh Esrei (Igros Moshe 1:170). : ב ר כ ת ה מ ז ו ן in י ע ל ה ו י ב ו א If one forgets ל מ ד ני ח ק י ך, he should say ב ו נ ה ב ר ח מ י ו yet but not ב ר ו ך א ת ה ה o (1 If he said. י ע ל ה ו י ב ו א and go back to o (2 If he said ב ו נ ה ב ר ח מ י ו but has not yet began ה ט ו ב ו ה מ י ט י ב, one says the א ש ר נ ת ן י מ י ם ט ו ב י ם ו כ ו special bracha printed in the benchers o 3) If he began ט ו ב ו ה מ ט י ב ה at night, since most poskim hold that it is forbidden to fast, this makes the Seudah into a ח ו ב ה and therefore one must repeat benching. However, during the day, the Baal HaTanya in his siddur holds that one does not repeat benching because one may fast. However, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach holds that even during the day one should go back, because nowadays most people don t fast during the day. o 4) Women who forget י ע ל ה ו י ב ו א do not repeat benching because the. מ צ ו ת ע ש ה ש ה ז מ ן ג ר מ א is a ע ו נ ג י ו ט mitzvah of If one forgets to say ו כ ת ו ב ל ח י י ם ט ו ב י ם, מ י כ מ ו ך, ז כ ר נ ו ל ח י י ם, or ב ס פ ר ח י י ם, if he has not yet said the ש ם ה of that Bracha, one returns and says it. If he has already. י ה י ו ל ר צ ו ן after, one does not go back but can say it ש ם ה said the י ו ם mentions in davening, one does not go back since he י ע ל ה ו י ב ו א If one forgets Tefillah. in ה ז כ ר ו ן 1 All the Halachos were recorded by a talmid, and all mistakes should be attributed to him.
Seudos There is a minhag to bake round challos for Rosh Hashanah for three reasons: a) because anything round doesn t have an end, which is a siman for ם י מ י ת ו כ י ר א, b) it is a sign of Achdus, c) it is in the shape of a crown, for ה כ ו ל מ ר ת כ ך ל ן ת י ו. Kiddush On the first night one should recite ו נ י י ח ה ש twice. Once for the Yom Tov at Kiddush, and then again one should say it on the new fruit. Therefore, while making Kiddush one should ensure that the ו נ י י ח ה ש fruits are not in front of him. If they are, he should have in mind that the ו נ י י ח ה ש on kiddush should not cover the ו נ י י ח ה ש on the fruits. On the second night, when the woman lights candles, the ו נ י י ח ה ש fruit should be in front of her while she is lighting. She should have in mind though that the main ו נ י י ח ה ש is on the day. However, since it s a question whether there is an additional obligation to say ו נ י י ח ה ש for the Yom Tov on the second day, she should have in mind that the ו נ י י ח ה ש is also going on the fruit. On the second night, since according to most minhagim the woman lights candles just before Kiddush, she should not make a ק ס פ ה (by speaking) until after the husband makes kiddush, where immediately after he makes a ץ ע ה י ר פ א ר ו ב on the ו נ י י ח ה ש fruit (before washing). This allows her ו נ י י ח ה ש to go on the new fruit that will be eaten. Also, when the husband makes kiddush on the second night, he should make sure that the ו נ י י ח ה ש fruit is on front of him when reciting the ו נ י י ח ה ש on Kiddush, however he should keep in mind that the ר ק י ע of ו נ י י ח ה ש is on the day, and the fruit is only to prevent a possible ה ל ט ב ל ה כ ר ב Immediately after kiddush before washing (as mentioned above), he sits down to make a ץ ע ה י ר פ א ר ו ב on the ו נ י י ח ה ש fruit. He should eat less than a k zyais (to not come to a safek of needing to make a Bracha Achrona). If one is planning to have fruit at dessert, one should have in mind that this א ר ו ב ץ ע ה י ר פ is also going on that fruit. Someone who has eaten all of his ו נ י י ח ה ש fruit on the first night, if there is one member of the household that did not eat the ו נ י י ח ה ש fruit on the first night, he should recite the ו נ י י ח ה ש on the second night by the kiddush and the Mekadesh should say Amen to his ו נ י י ח ה ש. During the day meal, one should set aside and eat a special food and have in mind to be ם י י ק מ the opinions of those who hold that even on Yom Tov one should eat three Seudos.
Simanim The Chazon Ish and the Steipler did not dip the Challah into salt, but only into honey. However the minhag of Chassidim is that one dips one side into salt and the other side into honey. One continues dipping into honey until Simchas Torah, but some have the minhag. ש ב ת ב ר א ש י ת to continue dipping until after ב ו ר א פ ר י ה ע ץ ש ב ע ת on an apple even though it is not from the ב ו ר א פ ר י ה ע ץ Some make the are not on ש ב ע ת ה מ י נ י ם (Minhag Chasidim). One should make sure that the ה מ י נ י ם the table when one is making this ב ו ר א פ ר י ה ע ץ on the apple. However when ש ב ע ת ה מ י נ י ם one should have in mind the other fruits of the ב ו ר א פ ר י ה ע ץ making the which are not on the table.. ש ב ע ת ה מ י נ י ם on the Date because it is one of the ב ו ר א פ ר י ה ע ץ Others make the. י ה י ר צ ו ן the one tastes a bit, and then says ב ו ר א פ ר י ה ע ץ After the If one said the י ה י ר צ ו ן immeadietly after the Bracha before the tasting, it is not י ה י the one should say ל כ ת ח י ל ה considered a hefsek. Some poskim say that even bracha. immeadietly after the ר צ ו ן One should make sure not to make a second ב ו ר א פ ר י ה ע ץ on dessert, because the original Haetz covers the dessert (as mentioned above). בורא פרי האדמה One should not forget to say ב ו ר א פ ר י ה א ד מ ה on those Simanim whose brocha is. ה א ד מ ה The Shulchan Aruch HaRav writes the following seder: Karti (leek), Silka, Tamra, Kara, and Ruviah. However, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach holds that one should first make a bracha ד ב ר י ם ה ב א י ם מ ח מ ת (squash) because the other ones may be considered ק ר א on the on a melon or a ה א ד מ ה For this reason, some are machmir to first make the.ה ס ע ו ד ה banana which are for sure not part of the seuda. כ ר ת י (beets), and after that comes the ס י ל ק א (squash) one eats the ק ר א After the (leek). Even a person who is not feeling well and cannot eat the simanim should still say the י ה י ר צ ו ן just by looking at the simanim. The G RA holds that one should not eat black or red grapes on Rosh Hashanah. However one may eat green grapes and use them for the ש ה ח י י נ ו on the second night.
Acidic or Bitter Fruits There is a minhag dating back to the Geonim not to eat acidic or bitter fruits from Rosh Hashanah until Simchas Torah. This includes regular unripe fruits that are generally more acidic. One should not suck a lemon by itself. However, one may mix lemon into a cooked food. There is a minhag not to eat nuts which are gematria ח ט א from Rosh Hashanah until Simchas Torah. Some are makpid not to even put nuts into a cooked or baked food. Sharp foods such as peppers are fine to eat, because only acidic and bitter foods are mentioned in the Shulchan Aruch. Tefillos The GR A was strongly opposed to crying on Rosh Hashanah מ ע ש ה ר ב א ו ת ר ז) ) because it is a day of ח ד ו ת ה ה י א מ ע ו ז כ ם. The Arizal however writes that one should cry on Rosh Hashanah. The Mefarshim explain that it is not a contradiction. The Arizal is speaking about crying about passion for closeness with Hashem, and the G RA was speaking about crying because of sadness which is strongly forbidden by everyone. The congregation should call out ה מ ל ך when the Baal Shachris says ה מ ל ך, even if one is still in the middle of his Psukei D Zimra, and is not considered a hefsek. This is. ב ר ו ב ע ם ה ד ר ת מ ל ך because of Regarding ש י ר ה מ ע ל ו ת that is said after י ש ת ב ח, one who is still in the middle of Psukei D Zimra: o Minhag Nusach Ashkenaz is not to be mafsik and say it whenever one reaches. י ש ת ב ח o Minhag Nusach Sefard is to stop and say ש י ר ה מ ע ל ו ת with the Tzibbur and one. י ש ת ב ח can say it again once one reaches Hafsakah Before Tekios The Sefer Torah is left on the Bima and one must cover it with a Tallis. There should also be at least 10 people in the shul because of the Kavod of a Sefer Torah. Those who leave the Beis HaMedrash during the break should make sure to wash their hands again when they come in. ק י ד ו ש ב מ ק ו ם ס ע ו ד ה because of כ ז י ת One who makes Kiddush during the break must eat a but is strictly forbidden to eat more than a ש י ע ו ר כ ב י צ ה of Mezonos before Tekios. Halachos of Tekios During the second day of Rosh Hashanah, Minhag Ashkenaz is to make a ש ה ח י י נ ו on, and therefore if a Sfardi ש ה ח י י נ ו, and the Minhag Sfardi is not to make a ת ק י ע ת ש ו פ ר
davens in an Ashkenazi minyan, he should not say Amen to the Baal Tokea s ו נ י י ח ה ש. Bedieved, if he did so it is not ב כ ע מ. Even though today women have taken upon themselves to be makeyem the mitzvah of hearing ר פ ו ש ת ע י ק ת, ן י ד ה ר ק י ע מ it is enough for them to hear the 30 kolos of ת ו ע י ק ת ב ש ו י מ ד, because that is the ה ר ו ת ה ן מ ב ו י ח. If it is possible, it is preferable to hear the full 100 kolos. One who comes to shul only after the Baal Tokea made the brachos, if there is time, one should make the brachos on their own. If there is no time, one should wait until after the first set, between the Sedarim of ת ר ש ת and ת ש ת. However, if he didn t make the Bracha until after he heard the thirty kolos, many poskim hold he cannot make the bracha because he was already mekayem his mitzvah א ת י י ר ו א ד of ר פ ו ש ת ע י ק ת. However, if he arrived to shul once the Baal Tokea had already started the Tekios (and missed a few tekios), he can make the bracha during ד מ ו ע מ ד ת ו ע י ק ת during Chazaras HaShatz. He should be mechaven not to be א צ ו י in the Tekios of the ש ח ל ת ל י פ ת, and then by Chazaras HaShatz, before the Tekios, he should make the brachos, and be mashlim the Tekios that he missed after davening. It is forbidden to be mafsik from the beginning of the ב ש ו י מ ד ת ו ע י ק ת until the final Tekiah of ל ב ק ת ת in Musaf. Many poskim say that one may say ר צ י ר ש א. A person who finishes Shemoneh Esrei before the Shaliach Tzibur begins may learn ר ו ה ר ה ב but not ה פ ב, however he may say Tehillim ה פ ב (Yesod Shoreh V Avodah). Middle of Shemoneh Esrei The minhag of the shul is to blow tekios in the middle of the silent Shemoneh Esrei. If one finishes his own ת ו ר פ ו ש, ת ו נ ו ר כ ז, ת ו י כ ל מ before the Shaliach Tzibur, he should wait and not continue with the next section until he hears the Tekios. However, if his nature is to daven very fast, it is better for him to wait a few minutes before starting his Shemoneh Esrei, in order so that there isn t a hefsek of ה ל ו כ ת א ר ו מ ג ל י ד כ. If one hears the tekios while he is still in the middle of one of the Malchiyus, Zichronos, and Shofaros, one should stop to hear the tekios and wait to say the ם ו י ה ם ל ו ע ת ר ה when one reaches the end of that section. The poskim bring examples of many Tzaddikim who had a very lengthy Shemoneh Esrei, and they held that ה ל י ח ת כ ל one does not need to try to reach the end of a section before the Tekios.
