1 Congregation Ohabai Sholom - September/October 2010 High Holy Day Torah Cover Dedication Friday, September 3, 2010 at 5:45 p.m. 1

2 Our High Holidays are soon upon us. As we stand on the precipice of a New Year, we take time to reflect on the year past, and consider how we can best live the upcoming one. In order to fully prepare and take stock, it is helpful to consider and reconsider some of the ways we celebrate and mark our High Holiday season. We hope this list of terms and practices is helpful as we each embark on this period of reflection and renewal. May we all be inscribed in the Book of Life, and may we all have a Shanah Tovah u Metukah, a sweet and good New Year. Cheshbon Nefesh: A term that literally means an account of the soul. During the Hebrew month of Elul, this month immediately preceding the Jewish New Year, many Jews take it upon themselves to conduct this inventory of all their actions, thoughts and behaviors during A Message from Rabbi Goldstein Mackler Reflection and Renewal the last year, and contemplate on how to do better next year. The list should contain both times we acted our best, and times we could improve. Tashlich: From the Hebrew meaning to cast away, this is a ceremony where we symbolically cast away our sins into running water, using bread crumbs. Our Tashlich service begins after Rosh Hashanah morning services, as we walk together to our creek to cast away our sins with readings, music and contemplation. Teshuvah: From the Hebrew meaning return or repentance, this concept is at the center of the High Holidays. With contemplation, hard work and sincerity, we can always return to the right path, the right way, even when our actions have led us astray. Admitting our faults and failings, we can begin anew. The ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are called Aseret Yamei Teshuvah the Ten Days of Repentance. Together with Tefilah (prayer) and Tzedakah (justice, or charity), Teshuvah is a way to achieve the High Holiday blessing for a good, sweet year. Selichot: Literally meaning forgiveness, it is a time intended for self-evaluation and reflection required to fully engage oneself in the High Holidays. We reach out to those we have wronged, intentionally or not, and ask for forgiveness. We also grant forgiveness to those seeking it from us. Our Selichot service and program is Saturday evening, September 4th. Shabbat Teshuvah: This is the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It literally means the Shabbat of Return, or Repentance. Words reflective of the High Holidays are inserted into the prayer service. (continued on page 3) It seems that the High Holidays are starting early this year, though I like to say they are right on time. At Temple, we were in high gear during the month of August. The Rabbis are finalizing the finishing touches on their sermons and Cantor Gutcheon is preparing the music. Nancy Richardson has contacted the services participants, Mark Shepard has replaced carpet damaged from the May storms and Mitzie Russell has juggled completing the Kol Shalom while finalizing the High Holiday bulletin and inserts. Meanwhile, Lynda Gutcheon is preparing for the start of the Religious School year and the Playschool s new school year just began. 2 Get on Board As your President, I do spend quite a bit of time at Temple. I see firsthand the dedication, devotion and commitment of our clergy and staff. Not just during preparations for the High Holidays, but all year around. I would like to take this opportunity to tell them how much I appreciate them. I would also like to take the time to thank your Board of Trustees. This is a caring and dedicated group of volunteers. Every Trustee is either a Committee Chair or sits on one of our many committees. Your Temple is made a better place because of them. Whether they are watching over our cemetery grounds, taking food to those in need or fulfilling the spirit of Tikkun Olam; whether overseeing our Endowment, managing the budget or asking you to increase your Annual Gift, your Trustees do so enthusiastically. I am fortunate to be by Randy Goldstein working with such a wonderful group of volunteers. Even as we prepare and look to the High Holidays, we continue our congregation s strong and proud history. It was fifty-five years ago that we moved from Vine Street to our present home on Harding Road and dedicated our Temple. Your Temple is a precious possession. I am, along with the Board of Trustees, committed to seeing that our Temple remains strong, vibrant and flourishes for generations to come. Gretchen joins me in extending an invitation to you to attend a Rosh Hashanah afternoon reception at our home at 120 Dunham Springs Lane from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you. My best wishes to you and your family for a healthy and happy New Year.

Kever Avot: Literally, the graves of our ancestors, this is the Cemetery Service between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Judaism reminds us that the introspection that we are required to do cannot be accomplished without looking back to those who have had an effect on determining our lives. Our Cemetery Service is Sunday, September 12th at The Temple Cemetery. vows and oaths unwittingly or rashly. This prayer annuls those personal vows for the coming year, even as we still attempt to be more careful of our words and promises made. Yizkor: From the Hebrew meaning remembrance this is part of the Yom Kippur afternoon service when we take time to call to mind those loved ones who are no longer with us, but whose memories and influence remain in our lives. Kol Nidre: Aramaic for all vows, these are the opening words of the formula for the cancellation of vows. It is recited on Yom Kippur eve, set to a haunting melody. As we reflect on past behavior, we understand that sometimes we make personal Neilah: Literally meaning to close or lock, this is the name given to the final service on Yom Kippur, immediately after Yizkor. Symbolically, the Book of Life is sealed at this time, as the final blast of the shofar is sounded and the fast is broken. 3

Entry will be through the auditorium and chapel doors only, so as not to disturb services in progress. If you arrive early, we ask that you wait quietly. 14 We are excited and looking forward to our upcoming Religious School year. We know it will be a year of learning and growing for everyone. This year our congregation celebrates its 160th year. It is hard to believe that 160 years ago, dedicated people had the insight and wisdom to create this wonderful congregation. The confirmation pictures that grace our walls are a testament to all their hard work and efforts. In that spirit, this year our Religious School will celebrate The Year of The Temple Community. Our goal is to have our students realize there is more to The Temple than just Sunday mornings or Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Each grade has been assigned a different committee or group of The Temple. Our students will meet with these people and either do a project with them or learn together with them. By the end, we hope to have built new bridges and created some new connections for everyone. We hope you all celebrate a wonderful, healthy and happy New Year. May this year be filled with a special feeling of community for us all. Shana Tova, The Year of The Temple Community Celebrates Temple s 160 th Year by Lynda Gutcheon ON SUNDAY, SPETEMBER 26TH ALL STUDENTS ARE TO REPORT TO THE MAIN SANCTUARY AND SIT WITH THEIR TEACHERS AND GRADE FROM LAST YEAR. IMPORTANT REMINDER: The parent handbook, usually sent to you in the mail, has been put on our Temple website ( for you to refer to for important calendars and dates. In addition, you will receive your curriculum overviews and class lists via within the next few weeks. If you have not registered your child for religious school, please do so ASAP. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to contact me. Zach Fenderson - Temple s Newest Eagle Scout Zachary Fenderson, son of Stacey and Tommy Griggs, became an Eagle Scout in a special ceremony held at The Temple on Sunday, August 8th. Zachary, who grew up at The Temple and graduated from our Post Confirmation program last May, has been in scouting for the past seven years. For his Eagle Scout project he built a path down to the creek where we have a traditional Tashlich ceremony following our Rosh Hashanah morning service each year. Zach s hope was that this path would make it easier for people to get down to the service. The benches and railings were completed a couple of years ago by another Temple Eagle Scout. We are so proud of Zach and grateful for his important and significant contribution to our congregration. 14

15 Images of Fall by Jan Huettner Right now as I sit at my desk, it is ninety-seven degrees outside with a heat index of one hundred and two. At the Temple Playschool, where you work with small children, it is necessary to have a sense of humor, a vivid imagination and a strong insight as to what will happen next. Therefore, when a bulletin article is written at the beginning of August and the topic assigned to you is to write about the months of September and October, you definitely put to good use your wild imagination and your ironic sense of what is humorous. Imagine that the leaves that surround the temple grounds are filled with autumn reds, yellows, and browns; the air is crisp with the scent of pinecones, and you are savoring the crunchy taste of apples in your mouth. Children in our preschool and prekindergarten classes are going on field trips to pick out their own pumpkins, or take long hikes at the nature center, or are identifying different species of birds outside their windows. These are the signs that Fall has arrived. Our younger children will be learning through their senses, as well. They will identify textures, or make leaf prints, or smell the scents of baked apples, or take a stroller ride through the Belle Meade Mansion. Since the high holy days arrive early this year, we will be learning how to say, I m sorry, almost at the beginning of the school year. We will gather vegetables for the fall harvest of Sukkot and wave our flags as we march down the aisles at Simchat Torah. October brings our Family Day Shabbat on the 15th of the month. We have many unusual surprises in store for this traditional family day at the Playschool. We hope to have a musical trio comprised of talented parents accompanying our songs this year. We will bring in a special guest for the older children, too. This will be an exciting event to add to our repertoire. Hold on tight, and come along. Fall promises to be a wonderful time of year for our ever evolving program. 15
