1 Celebrating the High Holy Days at Temple Beth Shalom Rosh Hashanah September 20-22, 2017 Yom Kippur September 29-30, Highland Avenue, Needham, MA

2 The High Holy Days are Jewish tradition s entry into the new year. The sound of the shofar the sweetness of the honey...the reflective spirit of our prayer...all invite us to begin the year by focusing on our relationships and our lives. During the High Holy Days we look back upon our past and consider both our blessings and how we might bring healing. We envision our future and consider how we might live more fully and more meaningfully. Throughout this sacred season, Temple Beth Shalom offers a wide variety of gateways services, programs, and activities for all ages that will help you and your family make these days most special. Together, as a community, we gather for prayer...study...helping those in need...sharing our stories with one another...and, of course, a healthy amount of socializing. In many respects, the High Holy Days at TBS are a kind of homecoming. Whether TBS has been your home for many years or if we are blessed to be welcoming you for the first time, we look forward to sharing the start of the new year with you. This brochure along with our special online registration will help you to create your personal and family journey through this season. You may register for all of our services and programs at: More information about the registration process and the wide array of services and programs that are part of our community s celebration of the High Holy Days can be found in this brochure. To ensure that you are able to participate in our services and programs in the ways that you would like, please be sure to register by Friday, August 11th. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to contact any of us. We are happy to do all that we can to help make these High Holy Days truly special for you and those that you love. Wishing you and your family a Shanah Tovah...a sweet and happy new year! 8 TIKKUN OLAM REPAIRING THE WORLD High Holy Day Food Drive Every year, the Temple Beth Shalom community contributes hundreds of bags of food in support of the Needham Community Council s daily efforts to feed the hungry. The Council has shared with us that our food drive is the largest donation that they receive all year and makes a significant difference for individuals and families. Once again, we will be collecting canned and non-perishable foods during the High Holy Days. Collection bags for food donations will be distributed to everyone who attends Rosh Hashanah morning services, as they depart. Everyone is asked to fill these bags with canned and non-perishable foods (instructions will be provided) and return them on Yom Kippur morning. If you are not able to be with us either on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, you may still contribute food. Simply contact Marguerite Dowd, TBS Director of Community Engagement and Administration at mdowd@tbsneedham.org or Please help us to make these Holy Days even more meaningful by using our fast day to feed those who are hungry every day. WOULD YOU LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN SERVICES OR HELP US TO SET UP? Service Participants Needed Our community has a wonderful tradition of having members participate in our High Holy Day services. There are many opportunities to participate, including Torah and Haftarah reading, reciting Torah and Haftarah blessings, leading prayers in English during our services, and helping to dress the Torah after it is read. When you register, please let us know of your interest in participating. Because of the numerous requests that we receive each year, unfortunately, we are not able to have everyone who wishes to participate do so. We do, however, do our best to weave as many people into our services as possible. At the conclusion of the final service on Yom Kippur ( N ilah ), all those who blow shofar are invited to help us welcome the new year with a blast of the shofar. Simply bring your shofar and, at the end of the service, all those with shofars will be given instructions. (No sign-up is necessary.) If you have questions regarding service participation, please contact Rabbi Perlman at jperlman@tbsneedham.org. If you have questions specifically related to Torah and Haftarah reading or blessings, please contact Rabbi Jordi Battis at jbattis@tbsneedham.org Wanted: High Holy Day Singers Once again, we welcome all those who wish to sing at any one, many, or all of our High Holy Day Services. No experience is necessary, as there will be plenty of rehearsal time prior to Rosh Hashanah. This year, our High Holy Day music will be inspirationally led by Cantor Erik Contzius ( In addition to our community choir members, we will once again welcome a group of professional singers and instrumentalists who will bring the beautifully moving melodies of the High Holy Days to our community. If you are interested in participating through song during Rosh Hashanah and/or Yom Kippur or if you have questions, please contact Rabbi Perlman (jperlman@tbsneedham.org). A schedule of programs and rehearsals will be sent to all those who express interest.

9 WOULD YOU LIKE TO PARTICIPATE continued Have you been to Israel in the past year? On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, during our TBS Sanctuary Services (both Early and Late), we will be inviting all those who have been to Israel in the past year to join us on the bima for a special aliyah to the Torah. Help Wanted! Setting Up Our High Holy Day Sanctuary at TBS Sunday, September 17, 2017 Time: 10:00 am Temple Beth Shalom Please sign up when you register online. Our Sanctuary set up for the High Holy Days is different from our set up during the remainder of the year. For the High Holy Days, we combine our Sanctuary and Simon Hall and set up seating for our congregation. As well, in order to bring everyone closer to the bima and each other, we set up a new bima and re-orient our seating. This arrangement ensures a warm and community-centered feel for our High Holy Day services. We need volunteers to help us create our new Sanctuary. Please sign up when you register online. Bagels will be served! Help Wanted! Opportunities During Services Our community has a wonderful tradition of having members help support our High Holy Day services. With so many people coming together, we do need help! There are many opportunities to help during services, including volunteering as a Greeter / Usher to welcome and support those who come to celebrate with us and helping to direct traffic as our members and guests arrive by car. Each year, we are in need of many volunteers to help at both our Temple Beth Shalom location and at our Rashi School location. Please sign up when you register online. REGISTRATION INFORMATION How to Register Once again, we are happy to share that registration for all services and High Holy Day programming will take place online. Please go to: to register. (Our TBS community registration deadline this year is Friday, August 11th.) Enclosed in this packet you will find a sheet with your family s/household s Personal Member ID and Password. This will allow you access to our system. (If you do not have internet access or have difficulty registering, please contact Tiziana Getz, TBS Office Administrator at She will be happy to help you.) Celebrating the High Holy Days as a Member of the TBS Community We are blessed to celebrate the High Holy Days together as a community. All TBS members and their family members are the first that we invite to share in the special nature of these days. It is therefore important that financial membership commitments be up-to-date in order for High Holy Day registration to be completed. It is a central value of the TBS community that finances never be a barrier to full participation in the life of our congregation. If you have any questions or are experiencing financial difficulty, please contact Marguerite Dowd, TBS Director of Community Engagement and Administration at mdowd@tbsneedham.org or at She will be happy to assist you. Adult children (age 25 or younger) are welcome to participate in all TBS High Holy Day services and programs without needing to purchase tickets. Simply request these tickets when you register online. Registration for Family Members Who Are Not TBS Members We are thrilled to welcome loved ones to our community for the High Holy Days. When you register, you will be able to purchase tickets for any members of your family who are not members of Temple Beth Shalom. This includes parents and grandparents, adult siblings, as well as children and grandchildren over the age of 25 and other adults with a family connection. When you register online, simply register each family member as a Guest.

10 REGISTRATION INFORMATION continued Please Be Sure to Register On Time! In order to ensure that you are able to attend at your preferred service time and location, please register by Friday, August 11, We do our best to accommodate every request. As we are blessed with a large community and seating is limited, understandably our services do fill up. When a service does fill, we will ask that individuals and families participate in services where there is availability. We appreciate your patience as we do our best to meet the needs of our entire community. High Holy Day Tickets By When you sign up online, please be sure to register everyone who will be attending. Once you register, each person registered will receive a personalized ticket by , complete with a schedule and list of locations. High Holy Day tickets will be 8 1/2 x 11 and therefore east to print. Please be sure that everyone you registered brings their tickets with them on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. When you arrive at the Temple our security personnel will ask to see your tickets and our community volunteer greeters will welcome you. This is both to ensure we have enough seats for everyone registered, and for security purposes. Wider Community Invitation to TBS Services After ensuring that our TBS community and their family members have had the opportunity to sign-up to celebrate the High Holy Days together, we will open registration to the broader community. This includes TBS members who wish to invite adults or children who are neither family members nor members of TBS. Wider Community registration begins on Friday, August 19, 2017, based on availability. Registration may be completed simply by using the Non-Member designation on the registration website. Who May Join Us for the High Holy Days Without Charge? Members of Another Temple: Any individual who is a member in good standing of another temple community may join us without having to purchase tickets. We ask only that these individuals please have their temple send us a letter letting us know of their membership, and that they are entitled to tickets as part of their membership. Letters may be sent to Marguerite Dowd at either mdowd@tbsneedham.org or at Temple Beth Shalom, 670 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA Because seating is limited at TBS during the High Holy Days, we ask that these individuals register online using our online registration system. Unfortunately, we are not able to honor High Holy Day tickets purchased at other congregations. Full-Time Students and Members of the Armed Forces are welcome to join us without having to purchase tickets. We ask that students and military personnel please register online and let us know of their status. Please Help By Returning Tickets That Are Not Being Used Because our seating is limited, if you request High Holy Day tickets for someone who, you later learn, will not be using them, we ask that you please let us know so that others might be able to attend services. Please, either: Remove their registration from our online system prior to the mailing of printed tickets. Return those tickets to the temple office. Contact Marguerite Dowd, Director of Community Engagement and Administration at mdowd@tbsneedham.org or We Appreciate Your Patience During all of our services and programs, our community is filled with the spirit of the High Holy Days. As always, we ask for your patience and assistance while we do all that we can to smoothly bring so many from our congregational family together at one time. QUESTIONS? Should you have any questions or if there is anything that we can do to make this High Holy Day season even more meaningful for you, please do not hesitate to contact either Marguerite Dowd, TBS Director of Community Engagement and Administration at mdowd@tbsneedham.org or at or any member of our clergy and staff. We wish you and your family a new year of renewed spirit, good health and peace.
