This was true in the role of women, in the embrace of interfaith couples and families, in the inclusion of same sex couples and a host of previously excluded individuals or groups of people. Rabbi Schiftan We have always challenged ourselves to review and reexamine ourselves, our behavior, our policies and guidelines, to challenge ourselves to widen the circles of our inclusiveness and embrace. We do so in the hopes and aspirations of enriching and bettering ourselves in the process and by virtue of the end result of meeting such opportunities head on. We do so because rather than weaking or diluting the sense of who we are...we do so in order to strengthen ourselves and improve our congregation and our Temple family. Our next challenge for inclusion focuses of those parents who have expressed the potential desire to expose their children to both faiths within their interfaith family. What role should the Temple play if any in being more inclusive and sensitive to the needs of these families? How might this impact the role of the Temple s religious school options in the years to come? I have decided to form a Study Group that will meet to reflect upon and discuss this emerging trend. The study group will be comprised of a wide array of diverse views and individuals within our congregation: Past presidents; members of our Religious School committee; parents or grandparents of interfaith and intrafaith families; our clergy team; a clinical social worker and/ or child or family psychologist; and members of the congregation-at-large. The Study group may reach a united consensus or conclusion, or not, but the study will have value, I believe, in its own right. It will concentrate our efforts to challenge ourselves to expand our boundaries, as an expressed value of our congregation. The study group will begin its work over the summer months and will continue its work into the fall if necessary. As always, your constructive comments and suggestions are welcome. 3 Our annual Temple fundraiser is upon us, May 5, We will be honoring the most sacred members of our congregation, our rabbis, who are the heart and soul of our organization. We hope that you will support our Joyce E. Friedman upcoming event to demonstrate to our rabbis our love and respect for them as they have extended to us all these years. The evening will pay tribute to our rabbis years of service and dedication to The Temple. Rabbi Mark Schiftan has been our senior rabbi for 20 years and Rabbi Shana Mackler, our other well-esteemed rabbi for15 years. For me, the years seem to have passed so quickly. It was 25 years ago when our family moved to Nashville, and the first stop we made was to join The Temple. As a member of our sacred community, we all should have at least one touch point in our lives of a fond memory of times we have spent with our rabbis, whether in good times or sad times. My fond memories of Rabbi Schiftan are the days when our children were blessed at graduating from the Temple Preschool, their bar/bat mitzvahs and confirmation. Our children, Matthew and Linzi, are young adults now, and actually the rabbi s children grew up with our children, riding occasionally together to Sunday School since we both lived in the same neighborhood. My travelling with Rabbi Schiftan and his wife, Harriet, on my first trip to Israel was another memorable moment, along with his blessing me at my becoming a bat mitzvah at age 52. And now, it is hard to believe that our daughter will be married this November with Rabbi Schiftan officiating the wedding. My fondest memory of Rabbi Mackler is her leading our Women s Retreat which I attended for the first time. And, I always walk away from Rabbi Mackler s sermons or discussions, whether on Shabbat, at Chevrah Torah, or during the High Holy days, more educated and renewed on how to improve my perspective on life based upon the teachings of Reform Judaism. As president, I have the honor and privilege of meeting once a week with Rabbi Schiftan and are able to work more closely with Rabbi Mackler. I am continually amazed at how they balance their personal lives and sense of well-being while still being there front and center for our members during all their life cycle events, including the times of sickness and death. The President s Message: Join Me in Honoring Our Rabbis on May 5, 2019 most profound moments I have witnessed are their genuine concern in spending countless days with families, experiencing with them and being there for them in the slow death of a family member. Despite that pace and depth of service, our rabbis still always greet us members with a smile on their face and never with a complaint. Their energy and spirits are contagious, encouraging us through their good deeds and actions to want to be there at The Temple to share with them their love of life, our Jewish spirit and traditions, and their love of God. Our Annual Temple Fundraiser is the most important event we hold during the year. Why? you ask, because our Budget & Finance Committee determines each year what we need to raise with our annual fundraiser in order to supplement our operating budget. This year, with your help, no matter the size of your contribution or that of your sponsoring business, we will meet our goal. We exceeded our annual fund-raising goal last year, thanks to the leadership of Co-Chairs Dana Strupp and Denise Alper, and our generous patrons. This year, Judy Lefkovitz and Victoria Marger have graciously accepted to be our co-chairs for this year s annual fundraiser and are planning a most memorable evening for our clergy. So, we hope that you will continue to support our annual fundraiser as last year. You really cannot put a value to all our rabbis have done over their combined 30 years of service, but this dinner is a special way we can show our appreciation. As you know, our rabbis have also touched the lives of others outside our congregation through their rabbinical work of social justice and social action. So your help in sharing our upcoming rabbis tribute dinner with those organizations, or individuals who you know respect and honor our rabbis, is most appreciated. Please do not hesitate to invite them to join in our celebration of Rabbi Schiftan and Rabbi Mackler. Contact our Development Director Erin Zagnoev for assistance. I look forward to sharing this special intimate evening together on May 5, 2019 with you and others in and outside of our Temple who love and respect our one and only, Rabbi Schiftan and Rabbi Mackler. P.S. If you are not able to attend, your donation toward the evening to show your support of our clergy is always most appreciated. The family of Dr. Frank Boehm invite you to join them in celebrating his retirement after 47 years at Vanderbilt Friday, May 10 th at 6:00 pm April ~ page 3

11 Preschool by Corye Nelson What Does Literacy and Math Development Look Like in Early Childhood Education? Did you know that crawling is crucial to developing the skills for handwriting? Crawling strengthens the core muscles needed for proper grip for healthy handwriting skills. Did you know that children who listen to music and repeat rhythms are developing their early math skills? Keeping the beat in music is the first introduction to counting for most children. Repetitive rhythms help children recognize patterns. Did you know that exposing children to picture books starts them along the path to reading? Children need to be given time to process the pictures, develop their own story lines and make predictions of what will happen next. Did you know that playing in nature offers wonderful opportunity to begin understanding the basics of geometry and physics? The clean cuts of the processed blocks, and man-made materials in our classrooms can limit the possibilities for discovering angles, energy and force? The trees and creek on our campus help expand the footprint of our learning environment. Slow Down: Make sure children have all of the time that they need to go through each developmental domain. Turn Up the Volume: Make music a part of each day. DON T turn the page: Allow children to explore books at their own pace. They are driving the experience and their brains are behind the wheel. Go outside (without a plan): Nature is a powerful teacher and research indicates that children who have regular exposure to nature are happier adults!! at The Temple Passover Tot Shabbat Saturday, April 13th at 10:00 am Tot Services are perfectly designed for families with children under 6 years old to engage with tradition through fun songs, fun stories, and meaningful moments. NEW Preschool Artwork on Display Be sure to check out the Congregant s Gallery (located upstairs in Meeting Rooms A & B) to check out the new artwork from our preschool students. April ~ page 11

12 SOCIAL A t T he Te m p l e ACTION Each month we highlight an organization which receives funds through the Temple s Social Action Allocations. Alive Hospice received funding from Social Action Allocations this year to fund art and craft therapy supplies for 40 teenagers who will attend the 2019 Alive Teen Retreat. The retreat is a three-day overnight camp, which provides a safe and age-appropriate environment for grieving teenagers so that they can process and manage the feelings related to their loss and learn healthy coping skills, which could prevent serious problems such as depression, aggression, abuse of drugs and alcohol, health problems, poor school performance and high dropout rates, which can escalate and affect the entire community. According to the US Census, 1 in 20 children will experience the loss of a parent before they reach the age of 18. Save the Date! We Need Your Donation at The Temple Blood Drive!
