A self-described Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches in a predominantly Christian divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt, Professor Levine combines historical-critical rigor, literary-critical sensitivity, and a frequent dash of humor with a commitment to eliminating anti-jewish, sexist, and homophobic theologies. On the first three Tuesdays of the month, beginning February 6, we welcome Dr. A.-J. Levine once again to the Temple for what is sure to be an enlightening series on the Biblical Prophets. In line with our Adult Education series on Rabbi Mackler Social Justice, Dr. Levine will share insights into the biblical perspective of some of our most pressing modern social ills and issues: Immigration, Health Care, and Poverty/Economic Justice. Our texts and traditions have much to say about how to create a just society, and we hope you will join us for each of these relevant evening conversations. Last month, we celebrated the unbelievable success of the Boulevard Bolt, and the record $290,000 donated to hunger and homeless agencies around Nashville. That brings the total donated funds since the Bolt s inception to over $3.35 MILLION! We are grateful for the leadership of The Temple and our partner congregations, the committee that works tirelessly to make each Bolt a success, the sponsors and many volunteers who help our collective attempt to alleviate the scourge of hunger and homelessness. Inspired by that sense of justice, we continue to look forward to the Shabbat services in February, as well, they offer us a chance to celebrate and uplift the congregation, to learn and to engage with more of The Temple s social justice and social action programs. On February 2, we welcome our Social Action Committee to share with us the amazing work they do on our behalf, and the many organizations they support through the various designated funds at Temple. We will have the opportunity to hear from Anna- Gene O Neal President/CEO of Alive Hospice. The following Friday, February 9 th, The Temple s Green Team will help lead our service with a creative twist. Our Green Team responds to the reality of climate change, and promotes our Jewish obligation to protect the earth and to preserve resources. The issue of environmental justice affects all of us, and truthfully, stems from and is perpetuated by us all. Every person, every human being, having been endowed with faculties of both reason and conscience, must know that he/she is responsible for this problem. We all contribute, either positively or negatively, to the state of our environment and health of our planet. It is unethical and criminal to deny the problem and to do nothing to help solve it. Facing and fighting climate change is a moral and religious imperative, At that service we will have the chance to meet and learn from some of the organizations doing that work, and how we might participate. The last Shabbat in February, we welcome Rabbi Neal Katz, who will share with us his music and his motivation in engaging in Judaism and the interfaith and justice work with his larger community of Tyler, Texas. You can read more about our talented and dedicated colleague on PAGE 12, and we hope you will join us as Rabbi Katz helps lead Friday night services and Saturday s Chevra Torah. Young families are invited to our PJ Tot Shabbat Havdalah Saturday the 24 th as we prepare for Purim with Rabbi Katz, and our students will have a chance to learn with him that Sunday. 3 Pursuing Spirituality and Tikkun Olam Dear Temple family, It is Friday before the Dr. King holiday as I write this. Everything is closed because of the weather, including the courts. The closures gave me a chance to slow down. I take a nighttime walk in our snow covered neighborhood. I experience the new quietness the fresh snow brings. In this quietness of a snow covered Shabbat, the "small voice within" allows me to reflect on my work life, my family life, and my communal life, particularly at Temple. Temple offers many ways for us to nurture the "small voice within" and to engage with life's spiritual Martin Sir questions. A new lay-led group, Spiritual Journeys, is currently reflecting on the spiritual writings of Rabbi Rami Shapiro. Dr. David Barton is continuing our study of spiritual figures of our recent past. Torah study on Thursdays and Saturdays offer similar opportunities, as well as our ongoing adult education. And, our services, with our beautiful music, can enhance one's spiritual life, particularly when practiced as a regular spiritual discipline. My "inner voice" on this Friday evening before the King holiday turns to Dr. King's dream for "beloved community". At Temple, we have created and continue to work at creating sacred community. I am glad to say our work furthers Dr. King's dream for "beloved community." At Temple, we practice repairing our world/ tikkun olam with many pathways, including our Caring Connection Committee, our Social Action Committee, our new Social Justice Committee, our revamped environmental/ Being Geen Committee, Room in the Inn, and the Boulevard Bolt. However, sociologists and political scientists warn us against a tendency toward decline in civic engagement. The phenomenon was described in Robert Putnam's book, Bowling Alone, Collapse and Revival of American Community. Here at Temple, we meet the challenge described by Robert Putnam, but we still must resist tendencies that might keep us from being fully engaged in organized acts of lovingkindness or repair of the world/tikkun olam. "Proximity" to the social condition that needs to be repaired, according to Brian Stephenson, a modern civil rights leader, is one of the keys to increased engagement. So...Come to Temple for our Social Action Shabbat on February 2 and meet the people that work for the various social service agencies we help fund. Consider, for example, volunteering at a " Freedom School" that serves "at risk" youth or work for the expansion of health care for uninsured Tennesseans at the Tennessee Justice Center. Or, come to our environmental/ Being Green Shabbat on February 9 and learn how you can work to reduce the effects of climate change. Or, work with our Social Justice Committee as it plans educational forums to bring us more " proximate" wth the challenges facing new immigrants/refugees, the challenges for persons facing racial injustice, or the challenges facing transgendered youth. Or, help our religious school implement and keep alive the hope for future generations with its theme of the year, tikkun olam. Or, join Temple members at a Noah(Nashville Organized for Action and Hope) meeting to help people needing more affordable housing, better jobs, or more fair policing. Dr. King would be proud of us. Our prophet, Isaiah, who envisioned a world where "swords are beaten into ploughshares" would be proud of us. Rabbi Falk and all those in our congregation who have worked for social justice would be proud of us. Let us praise this goodness. See you at Temple! The Gift of a Sweet Oneg Shabbat It is with great appreciation that we would like to thank the family of Barbara W. Schwartz for creating the Barbara W. Schwartz Oneg Fund. This fund was created in loving memory of Barbara Schwartz by her son Michael Schwartz. Barbara was a long time member and was known for baking for our congregational Break the Fast, Oneg Shabbats and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. The fund will be used to help offset the cost of our weekly Oneg Shabbats, which Barbara loved. This fund will help to sweeten and enhance the lives of our members. This gift is a true blessing and will benefit our congregation for generations to come. 12 A Special Weekend of Music and Fun with Rabbi Neal Katz, Musician in Residence Weekend of February The Temple is very excited to welcome Rabbi Neal Katz to join with our Temple clergy for a wonderful weekend of music and learning! An engaging and prolific clergy person and Jewish singer/ songwriter, Rabbi Katz will share many of his own songs and the stories behind them as he participates in several events with our congregation throughout the weekend. Neal Katz is the Rabbi of Congregation Beth El in Tyler, Texas. He has been making Jewish and folk music for almost 30 years. Neal grew up in the youth groups and summer camps of the Reform Movement and was a song-leader for NFTY in Israel trips for three summers. He has also shared his music at Jewish summer camps, congregations, and conferences around the county. Neal has released three CDs of Jewish music and one folkmusic CD. He has also been involved in a number of other music projects with other artists and productions. In Tyler, Texas, Neal has created and performs with a klezmer band for the wider community. As a Rabbi, he is heavily involved in the non-profit world working to make his community stronger. He serves on a number of local boards, and is the immediate past chair of the local non-profit hospice in Tyler, and the immediate past chair and co-founder of a non-profit counseling center. Neal is also active in interfaith dialogue and peace projects. He also teaches at the University of Texas at Tyler. The Temple is thrilled to welcome Rabbi Katz for a wonderful weekend of music, fun, and learning for all. We hope you ll join us to hear some of his tunes and stories! 14 Social Action Each month we highlight an organization which receives funds through the Temple's Social Action Allocations. JFS has been building families through adoption for 39 years. The service was originally started because other adoption agencies would not serve Jewish families. Jewish families continue to turn to Jewish Family Service when adopting, partly because they can openly identify themselves as Jewish without potential negative consequence, versus using other Christian based agencies in Nashville. In addition, Jewish Family Service is the primary adoption agency in Nashville and Middle TN conducting home studies and post-placements for same-sex couples. By serving the gay and lesbian community, Jewish Family Service is upholding a Jewish value to not turn our back on a part of society that is discriminated against, often deprived the option to adopt. The couples we served are loving, stable family units who want to build families. They go through the same stringent evaluations as any other prospective adoptive family to ensure they are able to take on the responsibility of adoption. Very often, same sex couples are willing to adopt children who are harder to place. Funding from Social Action Allocations was awarded to support the operating costs and programming of JFS Adoption services. Social Action Shabbat February 2 nd at 6:00 pm Each year, the Social Action Allocations sub-committee sends Requests for Proposals to community organizations which meet our guidelines, and then evaluates the resulting proposals. Recommendations are approved by the Social Action Committee, and then by the Board of Trustees, for allocations to be made from funds earmarked for Social Action. In 2018, seventeen agencies including our own Room in the Inn will receive a total of $18,000. At Shabbat services on February 2 nd, we will honor these agencies by providing them an opportunity to display information about their organizations in our Oneg area both before and after services. Anna-Gene O Neal, President/CEO of Alive Hospice will be telling us about her organization that evening. 17 Preschool by Corye Nelson Role of the Teacher I love to give tours of our preschool. It gives me an to opportunity to educate parents about our approach to early childhood education. One of the areas of focus is our view of our role as a teachers. One Latin root of the English word education is educere, which means to lead out. As teachers, we believe that our role is to bring out of children what they are already capable of and help them build on that. We feel that our purpose is to guide children to ask questions, seek solutions and find alternative ways to problem solve. We view the role of teacher as a co-researcher who helps the child pursue genuine interests, realize his/her own potential and grow in all developmental domains. Our teachers are facilitators in children s interactions and problemsolving, encouraging children to think through their actions, consider multiple options and communicate their feelings respectfully and responsibly. Communicating and asking questions are at the heart of our approach. We rarely want to directly answer a question for a child as that would deprive them of opportunities to develop their own theories and possible solutions valuable skills that require practice and encouragement. Instead we pose additional questions with the intent of gaining clarity in what the child really wants to know then we provide relevant and extended experiences to give children the tools they need to become great thinkers and problem-solvers. Additionally, we take on the role of the observer. Teachers watch, listen and reflect as children play throughout the day. What questions are they asking? What play are the repeating? What topics of discussion are taking place? Following the lead of the child, teachers plan activities and facilitate conversations to weave the learning throughout the children s play. One of the ways that we make our work with children evident is through our documentation. We invite you to take a stroll down the preschool hallways and read our documentation panels.
