Vice President Martin Sir...Treasurer Joyce Friedman...Secretary To Jerusalem and Back I have just returned from Jerusalem, the united and eternal capital of the Jewish people and the cradle of Jewish civilization. For the second summer of my three-summer sabbatical, I once again had the privilege of studying at the Shalom Hartman Institute. The Institute was founded by Rabbi David Hartman (now of blessed memory), a visionary Modern Orthodox rabbi who believed in supreme value Jewish religious pluralism. Today, the Hartman Institute instructs Israeli educators on how to teach Rabbi Schiftan Jewish history and texts from a pluralistic approach; it runs high school programs that, while secular in nature, deal sensitively and responsively with the complexity of issues that have been sources of tension and divisiveness within Jewish communities throughout history, and, more importantly, in contemporary Israeli society. The Hartman Institute also trains officers in the Israeli military the ethics and morality of war (including the treatment of those of minority religious or ethnic status under the care of the Israeli Defense Forces). It also offers educational programs for Jewish Communal leaders from abroad, Jewish Campus professionals from around the world, and Christian ministers and scholars (about the complexities of both Jewish and Israeli intellectual and contemporary concerns). The centerpiece of the Hartman Institute, however, is the yearly summertime gathering of rabbis from across the spectrum of Jewish life, who gather together to study the ancient sacred texts of Jewish life and rabbinic tradition. For most of each and every year of our professional lives, congregational rabbis devote themselves to service delivery, giving tirelessly and often even selflessly to their congregations and to their individual congregants. It is a sacred privilege, one filled with meaning and spiritual reward. We rejoice and we mourn alongside of members, serving as pastors and gentle listeners; we teach both young and old, and those in between; we address the issues of the day, both from the pulpit, and in the wider community. We share our passion for the wisdom of Jewish tradition, even as we attempt to create enduring bonds between each member of our community and our collective heritage and history. But the summertime at the Hartman Institute offers an opportunity for rabbis to replenish themselves, to nurture and to nourish their own spiritual growth and their own Jewish souls, in the comfort and support of other colleagues. Imagine: It is as if a page of Talmud comes to life. Rabbis debating and discussing issues of Jewish law, and meaning, rabbis passionately agreeing, and vehemently disagreeing, with one another, opening up the throttles of meaningful dialogue and discourse. Like a page of Talmud, all opinions are valued, and respected; like a page of that sacred text, truths can be found in every argument, in each discussion, and among every rabbi and every rabbinic conversation. It is a truly invigorating environment, highlighted by the fact that these rabbis vary from Modern Orthodox practice to classical Reform orientation (I ll let you guess where I fall!). Men and women, young and old, gay and straight, veteran and newcomer...all gather together to reflect upon and remember the sacred scholarship at the heart of Jewish continuity and community. Nearly 200 rabbis convene in the city of Jerusalem in pursuit of this sacred enterprise and delight. The program also includes evening programs that focus on issues of concern regarding contemporary Israel society and Jewish Communal life. Among others, we heard from Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, and from Anat Hoffman, the courageous female attorney behind the Women of the Wall initiative, and the leader of the Israeli branch of our Reform movement s Religious Action Center. We spent a day exploring the tensions and the innovative and hopeful resolutions to the Israeli-Jewish and Israeli- Arab complexities, as well as the ongoing developments of the Arab Spring unfolding just across the borders, to the east and to the west of the Jewish homeland. I got the chance to be a student, once again, a backpack on my shoulders, wandering the streets of the Holy City on breathtakingly beautiful (and cool) Jerusalem mornings and nights. As we say at the seder table: Next Year in Jerusalem. I was fortunate enough to say it once again this year, and to fulfill that age-old hope of our people. I come back renewed, reinvigorated, refreshed and replenished, ready to go, and to give of myself, fully, in the New Year ahead. I am profoundly grateful to all of you, for allowing me the privilege, and the joy, of completing that journey. May the New Year be one of blessing, and of peace, for each of us, for our people, and for Jerusalem. page 2 ~ August~September

3 Get on Board Summer at the Temple is always an interesting time. While it may appear that things slow dramatically, in reality the pace remains the same. Temple officers still meet on the first Tuesday of each month, and the members of the Executive Committee still meet on the second Tuesday. With the constitutional reduction in the number of mandatory Board meetings from twelve to eight a year, there was no meeting in July, and there will be no Board meeting in September. Ray Berkt It is during the summer that our staff and clergy prepare for the fall and the High Holy Days. Whether it s the upcoming Religious School year, or the holidays, there is much to be done. As members, we may not see the actual preparation, but we all enjoy and benefit from the summer labor. Of course, our volunteers don t take a day off in the summer. For some, like those who prepare our Memorial Book, each day is dedicated to T he Temple, and work is non-stop. Keep in mind that the High Holy Days are early this year, so it is important that you get your Memorial Book listings and donations in as soon as possible. Summer is also a good time to experiment a bit and alter the normal routine. A good example is this year s introduction of the Picnic Oneg. Once a month, following Friday Shabbat services, our standard oneg fare has been replaced with picnic foods, including hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, and black bean burgers. Food is served in the Social Hall, so there is plenty of room and lots of tables. On July 12, 2013, we had approximately 140 people attend the Picnic Oneg, which was a very impressive turnout. Our final Picnic Oneg for the summer will be August 16, 2013; however, if you can t make it, don t despair. We will continue to experiment with some of our onegs, so stay tuned for future surprises - I think that you will be pleased. Another development this summer is the formation of a Technology Committee to develop ways to better communicate with our congregants, and to allow our congregants to communicate with one-another. Joyce Friedman is heading it up, and it will be interesting to see what our more technologically savvy members come up with. Please call Joyce if you would like to help. Speaking of technology, in June, the Board of Trustees approved the purchase of a new sound system that will be used in the sanctuary, chapel, and Social Hall. It should be up-and-running in time for the High Holy Days. It is state of the art, and will allow us considerable flexibility and control over all audio. In addition, we will be able to stream services and events, which will allow viewing via the Internet. This summer, we also began the process of putting together a committee to explore possible fundraisers to replace the Temple Arts Festival. Although it will be some time before we decide on a plan, the possibilities and opportunities are very exciting. If you have any fundraising suggestions, please let me know. Finally, as you begin preparing for the High Holy Days, there are two things that I want you to be aware of. First, as you know, our Social Action Committee distributes grocery bags so that our members can donate packaged goods to Second Harvest. This holiday, the committee will distribute envelopes in addition to bags, and you will have the option of making a monetary contribution in lieu of contributing food. The choice will be yours. Second, the reception that we initiated last year, immediately following the Rosh Hashanah morning service, was more successful than we anticipated. So this year, it will be expanded and more refreshments will be offered. Hopefully, you will linger a while and talk with your fellow congregants, Temple officers, and clergy. You will be able to avoid the parking lot exit rush, and still have time to enjoy the afternoon with your family and friends. Her mitzvah project is raising funds and collecting baby supplies (diapers, formula, grocery/gas gift cards, etc.) for new adoptive families through Miriam s Promise. A young and unconventional rabbi, he is hired by a congregation in Central- Bella and soon realized that military service was easy; his time at war barely compares with the ins and outs of a Jewish congregation, torn between past and present policies. Ted Pailet is a member of the Tennessee Bar who was involved in congregational life from his late twenties until his early eighties. He is perhaps best known for his work throughout North America for his attempts to resolve conflict between clergy and lay leaders over a period of fifteen years. He and his wife, Louise, divide their time between Tennessee and Florida. He is also the author of The Korean War and Me. They allow us to thank our congregants for the financial support that helps to make our Temple such a special and sacred space. Each year, we will continue to use our Recognition Boards to alphabetically recognize all congregants who donated to our tribute funds during the last twelve months. We will also list all Temple Named Funds and in the future, all congregants who have designated a gift to the Temple in their will or through another planned giving option. 6 Social Action Social Action Allocations Each month we highlight an organization which receives funds through the Temple's Social Action Allocations. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Every year in Davidson County alone, there are roughly 2,000 children who need someone who will advocate for their best interests in court, where the decisions about their futures are made. That is exactly what CASA volunteers are trained to do. When a CASA volunteer is involved in a case, children are more likely to stay out of the child welfare system, more likely to stop continually moving from foster home to foster home, more likely to be adopted, and more likely to be successful in school. Funding from Social Action Allocations in 2013 is being used to help train and supervise these volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates. Save the Date! Students will follow the Introduction to Judaism syllabus prepared by Rabbi Mackler, and engage in conversations with her and Patty Marks, past President of The Temple. Those seeking to learn more about Judaism will grow as a group and continue on their individual Journeys toward becoming Jewish. Students will keep a journal about their journey, and sessions nearer to holidays will include indepth learning about those celebrations and customs. Rabbi Mackler will continue to meet with each student individually periodically throughout the course. Students may join throughout the year, and there is no expectation of conversion upon completion of the syllabus. This is a way to learn together and to take these next steps toward becoming Jewish, living and leading a meaningful Jewish life. 7 Parking and Security for the High Holy Days Each year, congregants for High Holy Day services are greeted at The Temple by uniformed officers and professional parking attendants. Security this year will be provided through a combined effort of public and private personnel who are familiar with our Temple buildings and grounds. The usual procedures will be in place for security, traffic control and member safety. Please note the following very important items: 1. Leave for services earlier than usual in order to arrive in advance of service time. There are two entrances to The Temple. Drop-off is available only at the glassed-in-foyer entrance for those who need it. 2. Overflow parking will be available on the Belle Meade Plantation property. 3. If you park at the Plantation, we ask that you enter by way of The Temple parking lot but exit only from the Belle Meade Plantation exit on Leake Avenue following services. 4. The Temple driveway will be one way during our largest services. Please follow the posted signs that will direct you around the building. The traffic controllers will direct you as to where and how to park and exit. Please do not try to back into parking spaces, this causes traffic to back up. Your patience will be greatly appreciated! 5. Additional disabled & elderly parking will be available close to the building. Look for signs. 6. Please remember that our neighbors will likely be less critical of the traffic congestion if we park on the street rather than in their yards and/or driveways. Over the past two years the Belle Meade Police Department has towed cars blocking city traffic during services. BE WARNED, we cannot interrupt services to announce imminent towing. Attention! Attention! Attention! Attention! High Holy Days Important Information A Reminder About Seating Sanctuary, chapel, and auditorium seating will be in place to accommodate over 1,200 members and guests to each of the services for the High Holy Days. As in the past, there are no tickets required for entry into the services, nor is there reserved seating. We ask your cooperation through the direction of the ushers and staff in helping to maintain the dignity and decorum of our services. Please help them by adhering to a few simple but very important rules: 1. You may not save seats in the sanctuary except for the driver while he/she is parking. If you wish to sit together, you may gather in the foyer and enter together or you may save a few seats in the chapel or auditorium. 2. Please do not leave empty spaces between you and the person next to you! It is critical that we fill all available seating so that everyone who wants to attend can be accommodated. 3. A special seating section will be available for the convenience of persons with physical disabilities. 4. No one may enter the sanctuary, chapel or auditorium when the congregation is standing. The staff knows when to seat latecomers. Entry will be through the auditorium and chapel doors only, so as not to disturb services in progress. 5. Please be considerate of others while waiting in the foyer prior to the start of the next service. If you arrive early, we ask that you wait quietly. The noise from those waiting can easily be heard in the sanctuary. The speakers in the foyer area will enable you to listen to services in progress. 6. So that everyone is assured of having a prayerbook, kindly return yours to the ushers and staff in the lobby at the end of the service. If you own a copy of the Gates of Repentance prayerbook, we encourage you to bring it. Please... Drive Slowly! Do Not Park on the Grass! Please Carpool... Follow Directions! 10 Religious School by Lynda Gutcheon The Year of Blessings Promises to be My Great Last Harrah Beginning on September 22 nd with drum circles, a special documentary and Food Trucks, this year, The Year of Blessings, will provide students and families with many wonderful opportunities to express and show gratitude for the blessings in our lives and for the blessings we provide others. Each grade level team has planned special activities for their students both here at Temple and out in the community. As part of this effort the Religious School is partnering with our preschool, Robb McCluskey and Douglas Adair to collect specific items for the homeless community. This will be a year long project. We look forward to bringing blessings to others and in turn bring blessings to ourselves. We hope you will visit our Temple website to peruse our Parents Handbook and record any important dates of events in the lives of your child/ren. You will be receiving specific grade level curriculum information via as September 22 nd gets closer. Creativity Brings Blessings to so Many Once again, our congregation is blessed with talented and caring students who do for others. As our Religious School year begins, with our theme The Year of Blessings, we are humbled and grateful for so much. Last year, Jacob Rothman, son of Alice and Russell Rothman, was the designer of the Chanukah holiday card offered by Children s Hospital as one of their many fundrasiers. The Holiday Project artwork is designed by kids whose lives have been impacted by Children s Hospital. Your purchases help the Friends organization provide extra touches to patients, families and staff in their time of need. Since they started in 1973, Holiday Project has been a tradition for many in our area. This fundraiser is a creative way to support the hospital through holiday giving. This year we are proud of Zach and Adam Garfinkel, sons of Louise and Scott Garfinkel. Each of these boys designed a Chanukah card which will be used as part of this project. 11 -- Preschool by Jan Huettner & Corye Nelson Diaper Drive to Help Others Did you know that one in three lower income families struggles to afford diapers? Many times the choice for these families between being able to provide food for their tables versus diapering younger children results in the re-use of disposable diapers. Diapers are not covered by food stamps. The Temple Preschool would like to do something to help members of the Nashville community who are in need of clean, dry diapers. We would like to become part of a network of community groups that will be hosting diaper drives throughout the year to help assure that distribution centers are supplied with enough diapers to help provide relief. This wonderful project was brought to our attention by Robb McCluskey and Douglas M. Adair. Doug will be working with Jewish Family Services, St. Lukes Community House, Catholic Charities of Middle Tennessee, and East Nashville Cooperative Ministry to insure that families in need will be assisted through these agencies. Doug will also be coordinating the distribution center where the diapers will be stored, and will work directly with the Temple Preschool. How easy it would be to drop off diapers that no longer fit your child to our school! Studies have shown that an adequate supply of diapers can help provide relief to many families already distressed by difficult circumstances. Some parents have been forced into unemployment or denied educational opportunities simply because many daycares will not accept their children without a daily supply of disposable diapers. We would like to engage our whole Temple family as we prepare to help our community. According to a 2007 study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation more than one in eight pre-school Nashville children live in dire poverty. That would mean over 4,500 at risk children in Davidson County alone. Here is how you can help. There are no limits on collection amounts. A baby requires six to ten diapers a day. All sizes (infants and toddlers only, please) are needed and open packages of diapers are acceptable. Monetary donations are also accepted. Donations are tax deductible and donated diapers and cash contributions will receive a receipt acknowledging the gift is compliant with IRS requirements. We are very much aware that disposable diapers are not good for the environment. However, re-usable diapers are not realistic for the families we are trying to assist. Most apartment and commercial Laundromats prohibit washing cloth diapers. Many recipients depend on public transportation and, even if they could find a place to wash diapers, transporting dirty diapers to be washed would be difficult. As mentioned, many daycares will not accept cloth diapers and Food Stamps and WIC (a program that supports women, infants, and children) do not include diapers. As we begin another school year, we thank our families who unfalteringly reach out to those less fortunate. We appreciate your help and your encouragement. 1. Parents must be attending services in The Temple building. High Holy Day Babysitting The Temple will offer High Holy Days babysitting ONLY for the following services: Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah Morning, Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur Morning for the children of Temple members up to age 5 for a nominal fee of $10.00 per child, per service. Our goal is to provide the kind of care you expect for your children. To do so, we need your cooperation. The size of our membership and the increased demand for this service, as well as our desire to provide well-organized, safe care for the children, require that the following procedures be followed: 3. Children arriving without a reservation will not be able to remain in the babysitting area. 2. Babysitting is by reservation only. (The deadline for Erev Rosh Hashanah & Rosh Hashanah Morning Service is August 30 th & the deadline for Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur Morning Service is September 2 nd ). No exceptions! 4.
