Even as we enter the summer months, my colleagues and I are busily making plans for the year ahead. One of our goals for the coming year is to strengthen the ties between The Temple and the wider Jewish community. To this end, I want to share three exciting enhancements to next year s program offerings: 2 Pulpit Exchange and Study Session with Congregation Sherith Israel. At the start of the academic year we will be forming a bridge between Jews at the opposite ends of the spectrum of Jewish practice and belief. Rabbi Saul Strosberg has accepted the invitation to speak at services here on Friday night, August 28 th and has invited The Temple s Rabbis to speak at his congregation in return on Saturday morning, August 29 th. We are hopeful to schedule a Sunday morning Torah Study Session as well. A Message from Rabbi Schiftan... Temple Strengthens Ties with Nashville Jewish Community You cannot control the wind, but you can adjust your sails. by Patty Marks In past articles I have mentioned how difficult it is to write an article 3 weeks prior to it being published in Kol Shalom and read by the congregation. Sometimes the problem is that what is being written no longer feels timely or it seems like the thank-you is long overdue. The other challenge is the one I face this month. I am going to write about something that has not happened yet, though I am confident it will. I am talking about the passage by the Board of Trustees of the 2009/10 budget for The Temple, including the Playschool and the Cemetery. In terms of the budgeting process, this has been a particularly challenging year. Confirmation Class opening session to include presentation on Nashville Teen Community Israel Trip. Lynda Gutcheon, our Temple Educator, has invited Michael Pote (the initiator of Get Connected: Teen Israel Experience-or someone in his stead) to address the Confirmation Class families at the start of their children s 10 th grade year. The Israel trip is offered at the end of 11 th grade, and we look forward to encouraging our comfirmants and their parents to strongly consider this trip. Temple makes plans to host joint youth group event with Congregation Micah. Building on the cooperation established over recent years, The Temple has been asked to participate in co-hosting the sub regional convention of the Ohio Valley Temple Youth Groups during a weekend in the fall. In addition, The Like most congregations, we are facing a budget deficit for the coming year and we have had to make adjustments based on that assumption. Rabbi Schiftan and I have written letters about how we are planning to reduce our expenses in light of the reduction in our revenues. There will be another one coming this summer. At the risk of spoiling the plot, I want to highlight just a few. It makes the task much easier when your top people set the example. I am proud to say that although our clergy and senior staff had contracts calling for increases in salary, they voluntarily agreed to salary freezes. Furthermore, they also agreed to a reduction in their pension contributions for the year. These gestures indicate that our clergy and senior staff understand the situation we are in and are making a sacrifice. And we appreciate it! We also appreciate the sacrifice our support staff and teachers are making by Temple Youth Group will be putting together a basketball team to travel to a region-wide Jewish Basketball Tournament hosted by Temple Israel of Memphis. Rabbi Goldstein Mackler and Rabbi Saul Strosberg trip in December. An adventure is being planned for a joint trip to Israel with The Temple and Congregation Sherith Israel. Led by Rabbi Shana Goldstein Mackler and Rabbi Saul Strosberg, the group will depart December 16 th and return December 28 th. An informational meeting will be held in July. Check the bulletin for more details. We look forward to all of these collaborative communal activities and we will keep you informed in greater detail as the dates approach. My best wishes for a relaxing and restorative summer! taking a salary freeze. There is nothing fun about having to do this, but it helps when people are understanding that we must do what we have to do in these challenging times. There are many more examples of cost cutting efforts, but I will leave them for the next letter. I want to move on to happier subjects. I am pleased to announce a new initiative that we are beginning at the end of the summer. It is called The Green Team and it is made up of congregants interested in making The Temple more eco-friendly and green. We have worked hard to implement measures to reduce our energy use and be better citizens environmentally. But there is still so much more we can do. Judaism teaches us that this world is ours to take care of. Join us on Wednesday night, August 19 th at 7:15 for (continued on page 10) Yiddish Proverb

R E L I G I O U S S C H O O L Year of Repairing the World - Repairing Ourselves Ends in a BIG way Representatives from our 9 th Grade create prophetic messages as part of their study of Prophets Lesley Schiffman I believe the legalization of gay marriage in more and more states proves how much America has grown; it seems as though our country has finally learned to accept new, non-traditional acts of love. As a Jew, I believe that everyone is created equal and therefore, should obtain the same options and rights in order to live their life with as much freedom and happiness as possible. For that reason, I see a brighter and more peaceful future for America now that an increasing number of states have hopped on the bandwagon toward legalizing gay marriage. Everyone deserves love and I have always stood behind that view with both feet firmly planted in the ground. The reason gay marriage is such a debated topic in our society is because people have different views of how God thinks love should be shared. However, if God is truly fair and cares for the people, wouldn t God want everyone to seek love no matter whom they choose to share it with? Shalom Rottman-Yang The issue of extremism in India is nothing new. Extremism has been around since the beginning of human civilization. The Hindu extremism could be a result of the increased fanaticism in that region of the world or religious/cultural factions feeling tormented by the Westernization of the Indian culture. While it is important for traditions to be preserved, it should not be done at the cost of human health or freedom. The extremism in India should not be viewed any differently from the extremism in Afghanistan or Iraq. Just as in the Middle East, the fanatics in India want to impose religious restrictions on everyone, and have grown more violent in order to do so. Similar themes are the hatred of the West and the oppression of women. I don t agree with the views of the religious fanatic groups, but I respect their rights to practice their religions as they wish. However, their beliefs should affect only themselves. If the extremism continues, we will see an outbreak of violence between the fanatics and a policing force, which could lead to a situation similar to that in the rest of the Middle East and to the downfall of an ancient civilization and a major developing nation.. Marlo Kalb Immigration is a very important issue and deserves our attention. As Jews, we need to accept all immigrants, legal or illegal, and treat them equally. If we do not stick up for those illegal immigrants who are being treated terribly, we will endure more discrimination of our own culture and religion. Treating illegal immigrants badly is ultimately a form of discrimination. We must fight for their rights and realize that their situations are much more complex than ours. We need to look into a new perspective. It is a mitzvah to accept people with open arms and I think we should always fulfill this mitzvah. Our 7 th grade (pictured left) received a letter which in part reads... Dear Lynda and the 7 th grade Sunday School Class, Thank you all so much for your generous contribution of $700 to United Neighborhood Health Services Downtown Clinic. Your gift and continued commitment makes it possible for UNHS to provide quality healthcare that is accessible to Nashville s homeless population. The Religious School Committee has approved the proposal of putting our Parent Handbook on The Temple website for your convenience. This will allow you to see the Religious School calendar and important Religious School dates in an efficient and easy way. We will also be ing grade-level curricula and class rosters to you for your convenience. Religious School directories will be mailed to you for security purposes. 6

Summer Fun at Temple Playschool by Jan Huettner P L A Y S C H O O L We had a beautiful day for our Shalom Picnic on the 17 th of May. Many families participated and food, games, and fun were the recipe for a wonderful afternoon. This event was a great kick-off to our summer curriculum. Our activities for these warm, summer months include plenty of outside time at the Belle Meade Mansion, cookouts, and visits to Parmer Park. Field trips to the zoo, downtown, supermarkets, nature centers and educational trips will be taken and our older classes will visit many of the entertaining destinations that Nashville has to offer. Water play is added weekly, Mr. Keith comes to school to create science experiments, and Kidskills returns for creative movement. It is a busy time and packed full of fun. Welcome to summer! Allie Spetalick Teaches Playschool Students the Value of Gardening The Temple Playschool has a few spaces available for Fall! Please contact Jan Huettner or Noel Pittman ( ) if you are interested. 7

The Beverly and Jimmy Small Golden Agers Fund At their February meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the Beverly and Jimmy Small Golden Agers Fund. One of the purposes of the Fund is to help pay the cost of the twice monthly program The Temple hosts in partnership with Jewish Family Services. Two Tuesdays a month, year round, seniors from the entire Jewish community come to Temple to be entertained, eat lunch, play games and socialize. There are usually between 20 and 30 seniors attending. According to Anna Sir, coordinator of this program for JFS (and a Temple member), In the last year 46 different seniors attended the Golden Lunch Bunch on Tuesdays. This highlights how critical this program is for so many people. Although the food and entertainment are great, I think what keeps them coming back is the laughter and fun they each get from spending time together. We are proud to partner with JFS in doing this important work, and are delighted to have a Fund in place to help cover the costs. Temple members listed below participate in the Golden Lunch Bunch: Ida Alexander, Kathy Caplan, Mike Caplin, Lois Fox, Eleanore Hersh, Candy Kopald, Hedy Lustig, Norman Lustig, Frances Machanoff, Bunny Mattes, Dorothy Mintz, Bea Renas, Laura Rosenbauer, Anna Sir, Elise Steiner, Ivan Weinstein 9

( You cannot control the wind, but you can adjust your sails... continued from page 2) our first meeting as we continue our efforts to do exactly that! Everyone is welcome! I hope to see you then! Finally, because this is the July/August edition of Kol Shalom, I will hardly have time in September to encourage each of you to make plans to attend the birthday dinner we are having for Rabbi Schiftan. The old man is turning 50, which means it is his Jubilee Year!! (July 1 st is also a special date for our Senior Rabbi. It marks his 10 th year with the congregation!) Come celebrate with him on Sunday night, September 13 th. There will be lots of laughter and surprises! More information is coming your way! Help us celebrate 10 years with a 50 year old!! Until then, have a great summer! Fellow Temple members, We want to thank everyone who helped support the Temple Arts Festival by working or purchasing or making a donation -- or in some cases, all three. As this is Temple's ONLY fund raising event, we want everyone to participate in some way. If you have not yet had a chance to lend your support to your Temple, please take this opportunity to do your part. We thank each of you in advance because without you, Temple would cease to be the congregation of which we're so proud.
