2 Before I write on the topic chosen for this month s article, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude and delight in the renewal of my contract. Almost six years ago, as I met Rabbi Schiftan and then president Doug Small, I began to imagine myself as a rabbi in Nashville. I had no idea then that I would grow to love a congregation and a community so much. From the dedicated lay leadership, to the incredible staff with whom I work, to the friendship, support and mentoring I receive from Rabbi Gratitude, Grace and Growth is the theme of The Temple Women s 5 th (Bi-annual) Retreat to be held February 19 th -21 st at the Drouillard House in Cumberland Furnace, TN. Our own Rabbi Mackler will lead the programming. I know it will be a wonderful weekend! It always is! I love the Women s Retreats I have been on. This one coming up will be either my 13 th or 14 th! When we first moved to Louisville (after living in Nashville for almost 10 years!), I felt lost not just from my friends, my support system but from my God. I know that not everyone feels the need or even needs to feel the need, but I need to feel connected to God for the comfort, courage and strength I feel from that connection. I felt lucky that the 2 A Message from Rabbi Goldstein Mackler Grace, Grattitude, and Growth... Schiftan, I feel truly blessed. I am grateful to teach and learn with you, to share in the joys and challenges of your lives and to work with you as we continue to enhance our caring congregation. Each moment I spend as one of your rabbis fills my heart and I thank you for the continued opportunity and blessing to serve this sacred institution and community. On the topic of gratitude, one of my greatest joys is leading the women s retreat every other year. We have had wonderful weekends away, and February 19-21, we will gather once more at the Drouillard House for a fabulous retreat. For those of you who may not know what Sacred time congregation we joined had a female rabbi who was looking to begin an annual Shabbaton for women. I went on the first one, and almost every one for the 9 years we were in Louisville. The Women s Shabbaton was the most empowering Jewish experience I had ever had. It was from the Shabbaton that I began a Torah study class with friends. It was from the Shabbaton that I got the courage to talk about spirituality and God with other people. (In general, Jews don t do a lot of God talk and that is too bad for those of us for whom it has value.) Then, 11 years ago, we moved back to Nashville and to The Temple, where I met new friends who loved the idea of a Women s Shabbaton or retreat. And here we are, planning our 5 th Retreat weekend. For those of us who have come on past retreats, they have been weekends of learning, connecting, singing, praying, laughing, and taking time to indulge ourselves spiritually. From them, I have goes on at the women s retreat, I share with you some of what we learn and do, and what we get out of our time together. Hopefully, if you have not already signed up, you will join us and learn for yourself. We begin our retreat as we welcome Shabbat on a Friday evening, we join together for informal services to light Shabbat candles and share a meal. We ll have an activity and then the best part late night chats and laughs. From room to room, cabin to cabin, you can hear the giggles and stories, wonderful moments shared. Saturday mornings can begin with a walk around the property, yoga or (continued on page 3) by Patty Marks made great friends and wonderful memories. Everyone comes for a different reason. Maybe it is to meet new people or to strengthen their connection to The Temple. Maybe it was the chance to think about things like prayer or mysticism or God. Whatever the reason, it was and is the opportunity to take time to think about things we normally, in our busy lives, do not take time to think about. And that kind of time is sacred time. So, for whatever reason, if you want to be a part of this, you just need to sign up! I would be remiss if I didn t mention that scholarships are available! (See Rabbi Mackler.) Each retreat has been different and wonderful in its own way. And I know that this one will be as well! Let me take this opportunity to wish you and yours a Happy New Year filled with good health, laughter and love!

3 (continued from page 2) sleeping in, then we gather for breakfast and a brief service with some learning. We will study the topics of Grace, Gratitude and Growth this year throughout the weekend, focusing on lessons learned and how to implement what we glean into our lives moving forward. After lunch we will have another program and some down time to enjoy the beautiful landscape and time together. When we gather again for dinner, we will also enjoy our evening program and again, much more laughing and sharing. You can join in a mah jongg game or visit with new friends. Whatever you choose, we can guarantee, you will enjoy! Sunday morning, after yoga or a brisk walk, we will join together for Temple Embraces the Meaning Of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day With Martin Luther King, Jr. Day approaching, we have found it appropriate to also observe the national holiday because of the similar passion our congregants share for social justice and social action. During the weekend of January 15, 2010, The Temple is holding a Jubilee Weekend: A Celebration of Brotherhood, that commemorates 50 years on several home fronts for our congregation. Events include paying tribute to the 50 th anniversary of our Rabbi Emeritus Randall M. Falk, a civil rights activist, and the social realist work of artist Ben Shahn, along with a special book reading by anti-racist writer and activist Tim Wise, all icons and proponents of social justice. Special guests at our Friday Shabbat Service include Hazel O Leary, president of Fisk University and the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The Temple s Mosaic Art of Famed Artist Ben Shahn Unveiled 50 Years Ago The impetus for the weekend was spawned by the fact that the first major piece of artwork commissioned by The Temple, The Call of the Shofar, was erected 50 years ago at a time when the city officials of Nashville were in heated discussions about integration and civil rights. Rabbi Falk Marks 50 Years as Temple Rabbi and Recognized Civil Rights Activist Another highpoint of The Temple s jubilee weekend will be recognizing Rabbi Randall M. Falk, rabbi emeritus of The Temple, for his service to The Temple and the Nashville community over the past 50 years as a voice for the Jewish community but also for the underprivileged and minorities. Rabbi Falk joined The Temple s clergy in 1960 and quickly became one of Nashville s most active and vocal white clergymen, confronting racial segregation by Additional Weekend Events Saturday, January 16 th 3:00-5:00 PM Tour the Van Vechten Gallery at Fisk & attend the reception at Jubilee Hall Monday, January 18 th 11:00 AM Join Rabbi Schiftan for the March from Fisk University to the Gentry Center at TSU (Details will be available at The Temple Office) supporting integration at lunch counters. He worked with Rev. Kelly Miller Smith of First Baptist Church, the congregation s pastor and a civil rights leader, along with others and helped prepare African-American students for the violence they would face when they went and sat down at lunch counters. When asked what motivated him to become involved in Nashville s civil rights movement, Falk said that his motivation was the prophets in the Old Testament. The prophets challenge us to be concerned with breakfast and a wrap up session, then make our way back home. I can tell you that this is one of the highlights of my year. I love spending time with the women who join us on the retreats and each time I think about retreats in the past, I cannot stop smiling and remembering the great fun we had and the friendships forged. I hope you will join us this year. justice for people of all races, nations and creeds because we were slaves in Egypt and know the suffering of the oppressed. Fisk Jubilee Singers to perform during The Temple s Jubilee Celebration of Brotherhood Noting that Rabbi Falk taught at Fisk University during the 1970s prompted Temple organizers to invite the Fisk Jubilee Singers to kick off The Temple s Jubilee Celebration of Brotherhood where they will perform spirituals from the Old Testament. The kick off will follow The Temple s 5:45 PM Shabbat service on Friday, January 15 where Hazel O Leary, president of Fisk University, will serve as special guest. The Fisk Jubilee Singers are recipients of the 2008 National Medal of Arts, the nation s highest honor for artists and patrons of the arts, presented by former U.S. President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. Anti-Racist Writer Tim Wise to Speak at The Temple s Book Club Other planned events for The Temple s Jubilee Celebration of Brotherhood include a book reading and discussion with Tim Wise, one of the most prominent anti-racist writers and activists in the United States, on Sunday, January 17, 10 AM at The Temple. Wise, a former religious school student of The Temple, will discuss his book, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son. For more information about The Temple s Jubilee Celebration of Brotherhood, please contact Chair Robb McCluskey at 615/ , or robbmccluskey@yahoo.com. 3

8 R Heroes in our Midst by Lynda Gutcheon E L I G I O U S S C H 1st graders visit the Family Affairs Ministries and host a Chanukah celebration for the students there. They sang and taught songs and taught everyone how to play dreidel. Each student brought a new toy for the Christmas Room which aids families in the community who cannot purchase Christmas gifts for their children 3rd graders visit Second Harvest Food Bank and meet with Mark Rubin who showed them around and talked with them about the importance of providing food for those who have none. Being a Hero is as Easy as Growing Your Hair! Rabbi Mackler donated almost 12 inches of her hair to the Hair Prosthesis Institute(HPI) in Bellevue. She learned about this local spot through her stylist, Chris Zimmer. HPI has a program called Heart Strings, an organization developed for children with any type of hair loss disorder. Human hair wigs are created specifically for, though not limited to, children in Tennessee. Rabbi Mackler haddonated 14 inches of her hair to Locks of Love 10 years ago, as well. He role plays with the students some interesting situations.

9 January Warms the Heart By Jan Huettner P L A Y S C H O O L When winter seeps in and the cold winds and hint of snow make us want to pull up the covers and sleep in, the Temple Playschool will be focusing on keeping others warm. Since November, the Playschool has been participating in helping our religious school and its partner agency, Family Affairs Ministries, gather warm clothes and blankets for those who do not have the opportunity to help themselves. This organization has done so much to provide guidance and support to broken and impoverished families in East Nashville. We are fortunate that our Temple has made this important connection so that the Playschool can do its part. We have gathered coats, blankets, shoes, pillows, toys and more in all shapes and sizes, from infants to adults. Thank you so much for all of these generous donations and we hope to continue to give items throughout the year. At the end of January we will celebrate Tu Bishvat, The New Year of the Trees. Tying together the lessons of tzedakah and the joy of doing for others, this holiday teaches us the importance of caring for nature and the world around us. We will be talking about recycling, picking up trash, caring for animals and pets, and connecting to the land and people of Israel. Many of our children will be exploring and learning about how we can preserve our land so that future generations will be able to appreciate clean air and the beauty of the seasons. We look forward to your continued participation as we embark on a New Year and thank you for the many things that you do throughout our calendar year. May this month bring health and happiness to you, and to your friends and family. 9
